I mean her performances were great and she did soooo much promo. Do u think they didnt take her seriously cause of the whole spice girls things or was it too early. Now that theres kinda been a british invasion (James Blunt, Natasha BedingField, Kt Tunstall, Corrine Bailey) do u think she should try again?

I was reading her Wikipedia bio just yesterday actually, and they said that she's prepping a new album (according to her site), so I'm REALLY looking forward to it!!

But seriously, on one hand, it's possible that her problem was not that she tried "too early", but too late. With recent group-to-solo stars like Rob Thomas and Gwen Stefani, they struck while their bands were still at or close to their peak. Before their albums, they were featured artists on hits by Santana, Moby, and Eve. Certainly that's not the only path to solo success, but it seemed like a perfect strategy for those two. Maybe Emma could've tried the solo thing a couple years earlier, and/or record a hit single with Eminem, like Dido did.
But on the other hand, maybe she DID try too early. I think there is something to what you said, about "not being taken seriously". Perhaps it's simply too a big hurdle (that the Spice Girls are seen by many in the US as a novelty act), and solo stardom was too much for any of them to attain, at least this soon. Ginger Spice released a solo album only a year or so after the Spiceworld movie, and while it peaked at #42, it couldn't be considered a hit. Maybe in a few years, the timing will be right where late-90s nostalgia kicks in and the US market is clamoring for material by an ex-Spice Girl.

I still think "What Took You So Long" is a great song, even if it is half a decade old...I don't think that was ever pushed in the US though.

She did really well in Canada with "Maybe"...it literally came out of nowhere.
As for promo, according to Wikipedia:
"The album Free Me was released in the United States on January 25, 2005 but only managed to reach #183 on the U.S. Billboard 200 despite appearing on major US talk shows to promote the album such as The View, Regis and Kelly and The Tony Danza Show. She also made a number of promotional appearances for album signings in the U.S., including New York City's XL Lounge."

She didnt do 'Regis and Kelly', I remember it being only a small segment with her talking.
She only performed on 'The View' and she did 'Maybe' LIVE and sounded amazing.
IMO the issue was bad timing and messy promotion from her label, which is 19 records, a totally new label and still very small. They started the whole thing wrong by releasing her as a 'Dance act'
Her label, never gave 'Free Me' or 'Maybe' to pop radios, they remixed them and sent to some hot dance club radios and that was prety much it. Then both songs peaked around the TOP5 and she did a performance at a radio station in New York (KTU I guess...) and did an interview to Tony Danza on the day or release of the album and a performance on 'The View' next
So pretty much nobody knew she was having an album out or 'came back' as the main target wasnt reached... and well having a TOP10 song on 'Hot and Dance Club Play' isnt really enough reasons for people go and buy her record
So for me, that was the problem... 'Maybe' could have gone pretty well on pop radios and with added performances, its impossible not to like that song, and her album aswell, which IMO is one of the best spice-related albums and one of the best ones done on 2004.

There isn't much flashy or recognizable in the name "Emma Bunton"... I bet if you polled 100 people in the street here in the U.S., you'd be lucky to get 1 who knew who she was.

Why did Emma flop? For the same reason all the Spice Girls flopped separately: They were better as a group. Sometimes it is a big mistake for a member of a hit group to go solo. Just ask Terry Ellis and Dawn Robinson of En Vogue. Terry had a #10 R&B hit in 1995, but her album flopped; Dawn, on the other hand, jumped ship in 1997 and later joined Lucy Pearl, then jumped ship within months to go solo and flopped terribly in 2003.
If you're not convinced, go to Wikipedia.com and look at their stats. Better yet, just watch what has transpired and is transpiring (which remains to be seen) among the members of the Cheetah Girls; specifically, Raven-Symone (in my opinion the alpha Cheetah) as a solo artist, and the touring trio apart from her (Adrienne, Sabrina and Kiely), having flopped with a Christmas album, and planning a studio album for 2007.
Again, they're better together, while apart they struggle. Once more, the Spice Girls were not around long enough to earn their solo stripes. Same goes for the Cheetahs. On top of that, for a group like En Vogue, with all 4 members performing lead duties, where none stand out, it also proves difficult for a member to go solo.
Only the immensely gifted survive a departure from a hit group to have a decent solo career. Smokey Robinson is a prime example, especially considering he was the lead vocalist of the Miracles. Then again, there is Phil Collins, member of Genesis at a time when Peter Gabriel was the lead vocalist.

^^ Good post... it's the name/face recognition thing... either you have it or you don't and fomulaic groups like the Spice Girls simply didn't have that name/face recognition... Putting out good product helps too...
Groups like Destiny's Child, where you actually knew some of the member's names (Beyonce) before the breakup, are the exception rather than the rule today... look at Creed too... very successful, then they break up... Scott Stapp puts out an album which absolutely bombs on it's own and he had a lot more name recognition than Emma...
In the old days, it was a lot easier for groups to succeed after breaking up... Genesis indeed was very successful as a group as were Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel in their solo careers... same goes for the Eagles and Don Henley and Glenn Frey... it's all in the name/face recognition and also creating good product.

Well I think its important to remember that while Emma may have flopped in the U.S., she did quite well in her home country along with numerous international countries. To call her a complete "flop" is not fair IMO.

I think it's because she's associated with being a Spice Girl and the Spice Girls were pretty much a novelty act. Disagree all you want and even though they lasted thru two successful albums over about 3 years (not including their third CD), they pretty much have consistant success from their first single until the end of the second album's era.

Well according to Wikipedia, "A Girl Like Me" (which wasn't released in the U.S.) sold 500k worldwide (125k in the UK), and "Free Me" sold 300k worldwide (peaked at #183 on BB).
