CBS Flips KZON to Free FM Dec. 23, 2005 By Tony Sanders Another modern rocker bites the dust. CBS Radio is flipping KZON Phoenix to its Free FM talk format, effective Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006. The Zone was already earmarked as one of thee stations where Adam Carolla would take over for satellite radio-bound Howard Stern. Now the company makes it the 10th FM talker. Following Carolla’s program, KZON will broadcast the “Frosty, Heidi & Frank” show from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Tom Leykis follows from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. Two weeks later, beginning on Tuesday, January 20, “The Phil Hendrie Show” joins the lineup. His show will air after Leykis (from 8 p.m.-11 p.m.). KZON will continue to play rock in evenings and on weekends, the station said in a prepared release: “Every weeknight beginning at 11 p.m., MT, Phoenix’s new Free FM will highlight the best music from today, the 90s and Rock’s past.” Weekend musical offerings will be dubbed “Free Rock Weekends,” and begin on Fridays at 11 p.m. and run through Monday mornings at 7 a.m. The flip leaves Riviera’s KEDJ (the Edge) as the sole modern torchbearer in Sun City. I'm interested in seeing how this format will do nationwide in about six to twelve months from now.

Phoenix has its share of rock stations but I hate the idea of FM Talk... wherever... doesn't matter what kind of programming they might have.

Most FM talk stations I've heard have been the "guy talk" format and the programming never really appealed to me.
