The new arbitrons are out and not surprisingly, the Christmas format continued it's perennial success at AC KOST and failed miserably in it's first try at Country KZLA... KOST went from a 3.1 to a 4.4 over the last ratings period, good for 1st place... Meanwhile, KZLA fell from a 1.9 to a 1.7 rating, it's lowest in quite a while... Also of note, the long time market leader, CHR/Urban Power 106 (KPWR) continued it's steep ratings slide... falling to 8th in the market with a 3.5 rating... A year ago at this time, Power held a 1/2 point lead over talk KFI with a 4.9 rating... they have lost nearly 30% of their listeners over the past year... Surprisingly, CHR/Pop KIIS 102.7 has not seen a rise in listenership with Power 106's demise... their ratings over the past year have gone from a 4.2-4.3... this appears to further reinforce the notion that the CHR format is in some trouble at the moment. Here's the link if you want to see the complete ratings for all markets: www.radioandrecords.com/RRRatings/

Power 106's ratings have been on the decline since the hurban station debuted (don't remember the name or call letters). KIIS-FM has skewed more rhythmic and having Ryan Seacrest in the mornings has done some wonders for them. KOST is the benefactor of an all-Christmas boost, but I think they'll go back down to their usual levels when post-holiday numbers come out next month.

^^ Seacrest may have helped the morning daypart, but if that's the case, then KIIS is sliding in the rest of the dayparts... a 0.1 increase in 1 year is nothing to write home about...

KZLA's flipping to Christmas music made NO sense for at least THREE reasons...
1)---There are least FOUR country stations which can be heard throughout Southern California (Simi Valley to San Diego) depending on where you live, and none of them matched KZLA's blockheaded decision.
2)--KZLA's weight as the largest country station in the US based on market size had a negative impact on too many single to count, especially by newcomers such as Danielle Peck, Keith Anderson, as well as the latest singles from artists such as Lee Ann Womack, Jamie O'Neal and Jo Dee Messina.
3)---KZLA's ratings have been in the 1-6--2.4 range for several years, thanks to a lousy morning show and too many commercials, just two of many probelms I have with the station.

^^ Yeah... and if they hadn't flipped to Country, Wynonna's "Attitude" would have gone top 40... instead it abruptly halted at #41 in R&R when KZLA flipped... of course when they came back to life on December 26th, there was no sign of Wynonna's song... I wasn't a fan of it, but it illustrates the impact that this decision made...
Also, CC KOST has pretty much perfected the format in it's 5 years... KZLA had no idea what they were doing... they kind of randomly playing Christmas songs from what I understand (I didn't listen to them except from midnite - 5am during the fiasco when I was awake)... the only current getting played during the day was Carrie Underwood's "Jesus, Take The Wheel"... presumably b/c it mentioned Jesus and talked about Christmas Eve...
I sure hope they've learned their lesson...

KOST's sister station WLTW in NYC soared to a stupendous 7.4 in the newest ratings book thatnks to ITS flipping to all-Christmas music, but I'm not sure when they made the switch.

If I do a little backtracking on www.yes.com I'm sure I can get you an answer... wouldn't surprise me at all though if they changed about the same time...
