BRM Devotes New Chart To Fast Rising Latin Rhythm Format Aug. 15, 2005 By Paul Heine Billboard Radio Monitor
Responding to radio's fast-growing Latin rhythm format, Billboard Radio Monitor adds a new chart effective with the issue dated August 19.
The Latin Rhythm Airplay chart will track a radio panel that consists of 15 Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems-monitored stations that play primarily reggaeton (a hybrid of reggae and Latin rap), Latin hip-hop, and some English-language R&B/hip-hop songs as well. Large stations in major markets are adopting the Latin Rhythm format at a rapid pace. Heard on WCAA New York, KXOL Los Angeles, WVIV Chicago, KVVZ San Francisco and others, the format has expanded from 1 to 17 markets in just a few months and is generating strong sales around the country.
“The format covered by the new Latin Rhythm Airplay chart, represents one of the fastest growing radio trends that I've seen in my 19 years at Billboard,” says Geoff Mayfield, Billboard Director of Charts. “We are thrilled to have a chart that will follow the trajectory of this ongoing trend.”
The new Latin Rhythm Airplay chart will appear weekly in Billboard Radio Monitor and bi-weekly in Billboard (rotating with the Tropical Airplay chart).
