Stars Shine Brightly in Miami Tonight By Jordan Levin, The Miami Herald
Feb. 23--Premio Lo Nuestro a la Musica Latina, the Latin music industry's most popular, longest-running music awards show, returns to TV tonight live on Univision from Miami's AmericanAirlines Arena and could well eclipse last year's event, which drew a record 10 million viewers.
Pop star Shakira, Colombian rocker Juanes, grupero singer Marco Antonio Solis, reggaeton star Daddy Yankee, teen pop group RBD, Mexican hitmakers Intocable, veteran Mexican regional singer Ana Gabriel, and Italian pop singer Laura Pausini are some of the acts that will take the stage.
Yet for all its success, Premio Lo Nuestro still struggles for respect in the music industry, where it's largely seen as a promotional celebrity fest with little bearing on musical achievement.
Among the three big televised Latin music awards shows, Premio, which at 18 years old is the godfather of Latin music prizefests, is the most popular. Audiences love its parade of stars, which include Univision's telenovela actors and Latin entertainment personalities, who often outshine the musicians on the pre-show red carpet festivities.
Jose Cancela, a Hispanic marketing consultant who worked for years as an executive at both Univision and Telemundo, compares Premio lo Nuestro to the People's Choice Awards -- popular among celebrity-hungry viewers and publicity-hungry artists, but essentially meaningless as a measure of artistry or musicality.
"The stars come out for [Premio] but it doesn't have the prestige the Latin Grammys do," says Cancela.
Univision, which characterizes Premio as a People's Choice-type award, has also tried to legitimize it within the music industry.
Previously, the network used a secretive poll of radio station programmers to select both nominees and winners. In 2004 it instituted a new system: Nominees in Pop, Mexican regional, Tropical, Rock and Latin Urban are selected from the most-played artists on the Latin radio charts in Radio and Records, a music industry magazine.
Because radio programming leans toward the most commercially successful music, and because it is so difficult for new or different artists to get airplay, Premio's nominees tend to come from the center of the mainstream, and nominees and winners often repeat year after year. Winners are chosen by fans voting on Unvision's website.
By contrast, the Latin Grammys, which moved from CBS to Univision last fall, is known more for selecting artists for musical and artistic quality. Nominees are chosen by members of the Latin Recording Academy, which is made up of people in the industry, from producers and artists to songwriters and engineers. That means little-known acts and newcomers can break in as nominees and even performers if they catch the ear of enough people.
That's what happened to Juanes in 2001, when he got seven nominations, or Spanish flamenco-punk singer Bebe, who performed on last November's edition of the show and won the award for Best New Artist.
Winners still tend to be the most-established artists, but there are still occasional surprises, as when the relatively obscure Brazilian musician Ivan Lins won Best Album in 2005.
The audience for the Latin Grammys shot up from 3.3 million in 2004, their last year on CBS, to more than 9 million for their first outing on Univision.
The Billboard Latin Music Awards, which will be broadcast April 27 on rival network Telemundo, also rewards commercial success, but using a broader measure than Premio.
While its Airplay finalists are selected from the top names on Billboard Magazine's radio playlists, finalists in the Billboard "Album" categories are selected from the best-selling acts as determined by Soundscan -- which measures store sales of recordings -- and shown on the Billboard sales charts.
This occasionally allows an artist or album that can't get airplay, like Mexican regional/hip-hop duo Akwid, to make a mark. And the Billboard show will sometimes present a more adventurous act, like armless religious musician Tony Melendez, who plays guitar with his feet, in 2005, or jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval's duet with R&B star Alicia Keys in 2004.
"There's nothing ambiguous about" the Billboard awards system, says Leila Cobo, Latin bureau chief for Billboard Magazine. "If you were to sit down and do the math, you can't quibble with it. This is not a manipulable system."
Still, with Premio and Billboard selecting from the same narrow pool of top commercial talent, there's a tremendous overlap in nominees, winners and performers.
Ultimately, both Univision and Telemundo care more about television ratings and glitter than giving new acts a chance or rewarding artistic risk-taking.
With the audiences for Latin music awards shows growing -- and among those viewers are the young, bi-cultural Latinos so desirable to advertisers -- neither network is likely to mess with the formula.
"If the audience is reduced because the talent is not what the audience is expecting, we'd have to rethink our commitment to the show," says Joe Zubi, chief operating officer of Zubi Advertising, which has placed sponsors on both the Billboard Awards and Premio Lo Nuestro.
Says Cancela: "These shows are geared towards delivering ratings. They're not going to take a chance by introducing an unknown."

'Premio' Scores Second-Largest Audience Ever February 24, 2006 By Kevin Downey Univision's 18th annual Premio Lo Nuestro scored its second-largest audience ever Thursday night, despite competing with a slate of blockbuster programs on the English-language networks. The annual music awards show outperformed top-rated programs including ABC's Dancing with the Stars and NBC's Winter Olympic coverage of women's figure skating in key demographics, while posting solid ratings against two of network TV's highest-rated programs: CBS's Survivor and Fox's American Idol. Premio averaged 5.9 million viewers from 8p.m. to 11p.m., peaking at 9 p.m. with nearly 6.3 million people watching. This information is based on overnight ratings from Nielsen Media Research, which has been measuring Univision in its general-market study alongside the English-language networks since late December. Nielsen Media Research is owned by Marketing y Medios parent VNU. The awards show did even better in some markets, ranking No. 1, for instance, among certain demographics in Los Angeles, Dallas and Miami. Last year, Premio attracted 6.3 million viewers, although that is based on the Nielsen Hispanic Television Index, a different measurement service from last night's overnight ratings. That program was the award show's biggest audience in the 15 years that Nielsen has measured Univision. The special has more or less steadily built up its audience from just over 1.2 million people back in 1992. Final NHTI ratings for last night's Premio were not yet released by press time. Premio featured performances by top Latino stars, such as Colombian singer Shakira and Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Daddy Yankee. The show was a major draw for younger viewers. Among children 2 to 11, for instance, Univision averaged a 3.1 rating in prime time with three hours of Premio, again based on Nielsen overnights, trailing only Fox, which averaged a 3.3. Among teenagers, Premio beat both Dancing With the Stars and the Olympics in head-to-head competition at 8 p.m. Among men 18 to 34, Premio scored higher ratings than Dancing, the Olympics in the first hour of prime time, a repeat of Fox's Skating With Celebrities at 9 p.m., and a repeat of CBS's Without a Trace at 10 p.m. Premio tied with the Olympics among women in the same age group at 8 p.m. and outperformed CBS's Without a Trace. marketingymedios.com/marketingymedios/noticias/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1002074932&imw=Y

That's incredible! Lmao @ "children 2 to 11." Wow, those 2 year-olds were sure picky with what they watched! Premios Lo Nuestro over American Idol. :o
