I thought it was time for me to make another poll so here it goes. The following 8 songs were debut singles of artist very important to 90's music culture. I am counting Celine's first english speaking single as her debut.
My vote goes to Mariah with Toni in close second

"Vision Of Love"
I preferred the later work by all these artists myself.

Motownphilly
Boyz II Men ruled the early and mid 90s. I really wish that Nathan, Michael, Shawn, Wanya record sold well because it was a really good album, but oh well.
Again, Motownphilly. And they beat Musiq to the punch when it comes to merging words :)

"Vision of Love," but none of these songs are near the artist's best... with some exceptions.

Just one of dem days! Monica all the way! I remember when she took a long break but appeared on Oprah (when the Spice Girls were on) and everyone STILL loved the clip of "Don't Take It Personal," even bobbing their heads to it while singing to the 10 second clip.

Me too but I was looking for the song that broke them onto the scene Then shouldn't you replace "Leaving Las Vegas" with "All I Wanna Do"? Most people think the latter is her debut single anyway.

it's really hard for me not to vote for "Vision of Love" b/c that's gotta be one of the top 200 songs ALL TIME. that being said, since Mariah has many votes already, i'll give it to Monica. that song is a landmark, at least in contemporary R&B, and introduced one of my 2 favorites ever. it was also a crossover hit (only miss #1 hot 100 b/c of 'waterfalls') etc etc... so, monica most all of those are decent, but only two others stand out "hold on" & "motown philly"

As far as importance goes, ''Vision Of Love'' is definitely a landmark debut of the '90s as it introduced the decade's most successful artist. Great song, though not Mariah's best in my opinion.
Of the songs listed in the poll, my favorite is by far Monica's ''Don't Take It Personal''. '90s R&B classic.

Each and every last one of these singles are important to 1990's music in any genre and was a GREAT selection. I voted Monica b/c she was a young girl at that time and managed to come into the industry and break numerous records on the charts, and not to mention she is a STELLAR vocalist. But overall "Vision of Love" is one of the best debuts in history and introduced us to the AWESOME vocal powerhouse known as Mariah Carey.

Toni Braxton, followed by Sheryl, Monica, and Mariah based on these singles alone.
