Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (BRMC) has a new album coming out! It's called "Baby 81" and RCA's dropping it on May 1. "Baby 81" is said to be back in the direction of their earlier albums - guitar drenced, dark and multi-layered - in comparison to their last album, "Howl" with it's more stripped down Americana sound.
According to Billboard, "Baby 81" features BRMC's most epic track to date, "American X", which runs more than 9 minutes. Hayes previously enthused about the songs "All You Do Is Talk" (which utilizes 12 different guitar parts), "Am I Only" and "666 Conducer" (which he described as the most even blend between "Howl" and 2003's "Take Them On, On Your Own").
A spokesperson for the band says BRMC will begin a tour in support of "Baby 81" directly after the album's release.
Baby 81 Track Listing:
01. Took Out A Loan 02. Berlin 03. Weapon Of Choice 04. Window 05. Cold Wind 06. It's Not What You Wanted 07. 666 Conducer 08. All You Do Is Talk 09. Lien On Your Dreams 10. Need Some Air 11. Killing The Light 12. American X 13. Am I Only
____________________________________________________ I have an acoustic version of "666 Conducer" - it's promising. I can say this band has yet to fail me. Howl was so different for them - a dark Americana pastiche, yet it worked just as well as, if not better than, their earlier JAMC Jr. direction.

Yes, I already mentioned JAMC (one of my fav bands ever). No need to repeat ourselves. And they really aren't that much like them at all. Who are the people who call HOWL JAMC Unplugged? The people who want to get punched in the face.

Very excited. Howl had some awesome moments (Ain't no Easy Way, The Line, Howl) but I don't think it matched the debut which IMO is almost flawless. TTOOYO was good but sounded like leftovers from the debut.

my fav song of all time from BRMC? "Weight of the World".
I doubt I would have survived September had I not listened to that album (and this song in particular). That little lilt in "I know, I knooowww" just pulls me to pieces. Very haunting track.

"Weapon of Choice" is getting just a fantastic response from early testers. They will be making an aggressive push for Alternative and possible crossover airplay in March. I think they might do a Subterranean guest spot, too. Godspeed, m' lads!

Of the 3 songs I've heard (not including the Weapon and 666) I can say they are amazing. I wasn't a big fan of Howl (Americana, folk not my type of music), I actually loved about half of it. But yeah, this is a return to the dirty, dark sounds that made me fall in love with them.

"Weapon of Choice" and "666 Conducer" sound great. I agree that it'd be awesome if WOC did well here.

Alternative Press 226 May 07 Baby 81 is a return to form of sorts after BRMC released the Americana-drenched Howl in 2005. Baby successfully brings grungy, garage-rock guitars to the forefront, coyly supported with acoustic guitars and Peter Hayes' stripped vocals. First single "Weapon of Choice" questions the origins of freedom before segueing into the deliberate, strangely beautiful Beatles-esque "Window." Whether you fancy the hooks or the guitar fuzz, Baby's one album that's all grown up.

This will make or break them. I've listened to the first 5 tracks; all glorious. "Berlin" is maybe the greatest song they've ever done. WOC is destined for success, and will the album to strong sales. You know, unless RCA's campaign backfires.

A few days after going for adds: 111 92 BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB Weapon Of Choice 2007 RCA 72 48 +24 0.322
Little steps. I don't expect any +250 sized bullets here. But if it can get to the Top 50, more stations will add it & more significant gains can be made.
For the record, this is BRMC's US chart history: Albums:
2003 Take Them On, On Your Own The Billboard 200 47 2005 Howl European Top 100 Albums ? 2005 Howl The Billboard 200 90 2005 Howl Top Independent Albums 15
They haven't had a single ever chart here in their own country, surprisingly. However, in Europe ANEW charted well in various places. Hopefully, this can represent a turning point in their career. I might add, though, that they have turned down 7 figure advertising agreements for car commercials. They are terrified of selling out. This long-held anti-corporate stance recently gave way to unexpected news: they have accepted a car commercial agreement and will donate all profits to charity.
A message to our fans,
After six years of declining many opportunities to license our music to television ads we have decided to accept a car commercial. Some of you may wonder why after such a long period of time we have changed our point of view. The most important reason is because there have been many charitable events we've wanted to participate in but couldn't. After much consideration we decided we could contribute to these charities by donating 100% of the profits that we make from these ads.
We hope our fans can respect this decision. We know some of you will and some of you won't and we respect that as well. Many of you have been with us for a long time and we know this music is now as much yours as it is ours.
With love and respect. From BRMC

REUTERS:
BRMC delivers hard-rocking "Baby" Fri Apr 20, 2007 10:31 PM ET
By Susan Visakowitz
NEW YORK (Billboard) - "After six months of always pulling back, you just want to slam your fist through a wall," according to Black Rebel Motorcyle Club's Robert Levon Been.
He was explaining how, as he and bandmate Peter Hayes worked on BRMC's third album -- the 2005 release "Howl," a mostly restrained country- and folk-tinged affair that radically departed from previous efforts -- the duo's pent-up energy rose to a threatening boil.
"We burned out on being delicate."
Once known as a garage-meets-shoegazer-meets-psychedelic rock outfit -- thanks to its first two Virgin albums, "B.R.M.C." and "Take Them On, On Your Own" -- BRMC turned its sound on its head with "Howl."
"'Howl' was definitely a test for the fan base," said Hugh Surratt, senior vice president of creative and marketing for RCA, which signed the group after BRMC and Virgin parted ways following "Take Them On."
"But," he added, "the game plan from the moment we signed them was that the band was going to come back after 'Howl' with more familiar BRMC sounds."
New album "Baby 81," due May 1 in North America and a day earlier in the United Kingdom and Ireland via Island, fulfills that goal. With British-born drummer Nick Jago, who'd quit the band shortly before the split with Virgin, back in the mix, the reconstituted trio returned to its usual business -- kicking out the jams.
ON THE ROAD
"'Howl' was written on acoustic guitars mostly in bedrooms, outside of the rock 'n' roll world, while a lot of 'Baby' was written on the road, with the whole band," Been said. "It's a completely different outcome because of all that electricity."
The high-volume, guitar-heavy result has RCA gunning for modern-rock radio, which virtually abandoned the group last time around.
"Howl" has moved 90,000 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan, about 10,000 fewer than either of its predecessors. Surratt said he expects "Baby 81" to surpass all three of BRMC's previous efforts in terms of sales.
RCA senior director of marketing Brad Oldham acknowledged that "the sound of the record leans toward a broader, more mainstream audience" than BRMC's first two, but feels "the aesthetic of the band is still indie. The way they tour, their style -- they're still a little bit left of center."
Oldham said college and "tastemaker" stations remain key, and during a U.S. headlining tour spanning May and June, the band will stick with 1,500- to 2,000-capacity theaters. "That's a smart move," Oldham said, "because it's in line with the venues they played last time. It will help create a high-demand situation."
But Been isn't worried about buzz. "A lot of indie bands have that 'too cool for school' attitude and I think they're nitwits," he said. "We've always wanted to fight from the inside out, rather than being cynical from the outside in. It's much more powerful."

Baby 81 got a four star review and did better than NIN and Arctic Monkeys.
"Transcending their leather jackets, deepening their sound."
"Fourth albums usually aren't peaks for bands, but these former next-big-thing drone rockers have never sounded more self-assured. The soulful edge they developed on 2005's roots detour HOWL is evident on the folky It's Not What You Wanted, while a recent attraction to Britpop yields expertly crafted songs like the angry, politcal Weapon of Choice and the brooding crooner Window. Though singer Peter Hayes always had a heady, shades-on swagger, now he actually seems to believe what he's singing."

Little Steven has a column in Billboard Magazine. He has a top ten list. He has picked "Weapon Of Choice" as the #1 coolest garage songs, and in fact added that it was the "Coolest song in the world this week."
I'm disappointed in WOC's airplay; it really seemed to be going places with that +40 bullet and then over the weekend everything collapsed. In that region of the chart (50-100), nascent singles can pull turnarounds and redeem a bullet again, and I certainly hope that proves to be the case for BRMC. This song is way too damn catchy to be tossed aside like that. I hope radio understands their own stupidity.

Q Magazine - aka best written music publication in the world commend the album!
Fourth Album of leather, bikes and lots and lots of guitars
They may have been perched precariously on occasion, but somehow BRMC have always avoided toppling into the dreaded pit of derivation. On their 2001 debut they shrugged off belittling accusations of being Jesus and Mary Chain knock offs, but by Howl four years later they'd matured into a gospel-tinged riot.
Baby 81's exhilarating garage rock may ride on a riff kidnapped from John Squire before visiting Mid-tempo Oasis balladry via Bobby Gillespie's Wee Rock Vocabulary book (cf "suicide" "revolution") but on tracks such as single Weapon of Choice, Berlin, 666 Conducer and Need Some Air, BRMC can show anyone a clean set of scuffed heels
(Key track to download - Berlin)
4 out of 5 stars.
So far the reviews have been very positive for this release. It means a lot to me for this to succeed, and I'm not sure why. I have a feeling the whole year might turn out tragically if this doesn't sell pretty well. I actually felt ill when I saw that bullet drop the other day. Ugh.
