Debuts at #29 in the UK. "Tick Tick Boom" peaked at #41 there last week.

Rolling StoneThe Hives The Black And White Album 4 STARS The Hives' howlin' Pelle Almqvist remains the international king of talk-idiot-talk stage patter. Pelle: "I'm out of control! Tell me to take it easy!" Crowd: "Take it easy!" Pelle: "No, I wooon't!" He's right — he won't. The Swedish garage-punk maniacs continue to polish their sharp-dressed groove on their fourth album, adding new tricks, rhythmic jolts and some very not-indie studio wizardry without denting their basic bang-on-the-head formula, as epitomized by "Try It Again." Pharrell joins them for "T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S.," bringing a robot-disco flair that could pass for LCD Soundsystem after group sex with Heatwave, while throwing in some demented doo-wop to "Well All Right!" "Giddy Up" and "Tick Tick Boom" tweak the Ramones-ready guitars with discreet funk. "A Stroll Through Hive Manor Corridors" is a strange, horror-movie keyboard instrumental, from the scene where the kids in the haunted house are about to step on the zombie's grave. The most surprising success is "Puppet on a String," with plonking piano and an eerie Tom Waits-cabaret-swing beat. Yet there's no need to worry about the Hives succumbing to progress or sophistication — their rock & roll manifesto is "Square One Here I Come.” ROB SHEFFIELD (Posted: Nov 15, 2007)

It seems that the highlight track among all of the reviews was T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S.. They seemed surprised at what Pharrell gave them. A nice funky disco-esque type beat.

Billboard.com:
ARTIST: THE HIVES
ALBUM: THE BLACK AND WHITE ALBUM
Seven years after breaking out of Sweden's eternal garage-revival scene, this color-coordinated quintet has somehow created its liveliest, most playable album. Its cartoon-tuneful energy pogos all over the place: an opening volley of blowing stuff up ("Tick Tick Boom"), an expert AC/DC homage about being broke ("Square One Here I Come"), equestrian Pixies new wave ("Giddy Up!"), 1966 frat-rock party voices, Motown basslines under laughs and cackles and yelps. Howlin' Pelle Almqvist has an awesome knack for turning simple declarative mantras into hooks ("I was right all along," "I can't go on and I gotta get goin'," "Whatcha gonna do? Here he comes for you"). And when tempos occasionally downshift (Eric Burdon's baritone verses on "Won't Be Long," creepy crawly keyboards during "Puppet on a String," even a robotically falsetto-ed Prince-circa-"Kiss" attempt on the Pharrell-helmed "T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S."), the fun still doesn't drain away

^Not bad, but I was thinking it would have a rating closer to 80. Oh well. It could go up.

TTB is getting Top 40 airplay on satellite radio. Maybe terrestrial will catch on, too.

I am appalled that this album flopped here. "Try It Again" is brilliant and should be topping the charts of many formats right now. I saw them live a few weeks ago & it was disastrous, but only because of a physical altercation in which I was involved. The Hives were great! And the Donnas piqued my interest briefly once more (I forgot about them for years). The next single is "You Got It All...Wrong"; I know because they filmed the video at my show.

Didn't they collaborate with Timbaland? Isn't he the quick ticket to success in America these days?
