Best of Common's Early Years Collected on Hits Comp Jennifer Lopez wants her album title backthisisme then: the best of common should come emblazoned with a warning a little bigger than its lowercase "then." The 15-track collection from the Chicago MC is culled almost entirely from Common's first three albums, all released in the 90s on the Relativity label: 1992's Can I Borrow a Dollar?, 1994's Resurrection, and 1997's One Day It'll All Make Sense. There's a single exception-- "High Expectations" from the soundtrack to Soul in the Hole, a 1997 documentary on Brooklyn streetballers-- but it's not exactly a career highlights package without "The Light", is it? Eh, we're just griping. thisismethen does a fine job of hitting the highlights from his Common Sense period and (slightly) beyond, and it's fleshed out with guest appearances from Lauryn Hill, Cee-Lo, Erykah Badu and Q-Tip. Pop the disc in your computer device and you'll be greeted with the videos for "Take It EZ", "I Used to Love H.E.R.", "Retrospect for Life", and (non-thisismethen cut) "Invocation". The disc drops November 27 on Relativity/Legacy. As for Common, he'll be on the big screen soon in the second-most highly anticipated thing called American Gangster you're likely to take in this fall. And he recently launched the Common Ground Foundation, "an effort dedicated to the empowerment and development of urban youth through education," according to a press release. thisismethen: 01 Take It EZ 02 Breaker 1/9 03 Soul by the Pound 04 Charms Alarm 05 Heidi Hoe 06 I Used to Love H.E.R. 07 Book of Life 08 Resurrection 09 thisisme 10 Retrospect for Life [ft. Lauryn Hill] 11 Reminding Me (Of Sef) [ft. Chantay Savage] 12 All Night Long [ft. Erykah Badu] 13 G.O.D. (Gaining One's Definition) [ft. Cee-Lo] 14 Stolen Moments Pt. III [intro/outro: Q-Tip] 15 High Expectations

Common never really has hit singles, no matter how good his songs are.

Common never really has hit singles, no matter how good his songs are. Exactly. His biggest solo single, "The Light", only hit #44 (Hot 100) / #12 (R&B).

With all the positive publicity generated around Common, I think those ole Grammy voters will hit him up with something.

Two things about Common: he can't get a hit, and he can't go platinum if his life depended on it. I don't get why exactly, but he just can't get those two things. :(

His songs are not commercial enough for high volumes of radio airplay and without radio-friendly material, his fanbase doesn't expand too much.

His 2005 Be has sold over 800k, so it probably has been shipped Platinum but just not certified. I also think his Like Water for Chocolate in 2000 is almost at Platinum as well.

Actually, as of May of this year, here are his sales totals:
Common's album sales from Billboard:
1992 Can I Borrow A Dollar 131,000 1994 Resurrection 231,000 1997 On Day It'll Make Sense 271,000 2000 Like Water For Chocolate 792,000 (Gold) 2002 Electric Circus 305,000 2005 Be 848,000 (Gold)
That's not bad for an artist who is not accepted as much in the mainstream arena.

Drivin Me Wild & I Want You are great tracks, too bad they didn't get urban support. I think he has a shot at Southside winning with Kanye's name on it - I'd be absolutely shocked if Stronger doesnt win Rap Solo Performance and Graduation has Rap Album on lockdown. With the absence of Eminem & Outkast, Kanye has been the golden rap artist for the Grammys.

He finally won a Grammy! About damn time! I think Kanye's name along "Southside" helped Common this year, although I can see Common filling the rap void if Kanye wasn't big this year.
