from Billboard:
Erasure Sees The 'Light' On New Album February 09, 2007, 10:00 AM ET Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
After an unexpected acoustic detour with last year's "Union Street," veteran synth-pop duo Erasure is back in familiar territory for "Light at the End of the World," due May 22 via Mute. The 10-track set was recorded last fall at a converted studio in Portland, Maine.
Vocalist Andy Bell tells Billboard.com the material was derived both from backing tracks Vince Clarke had sent to him via email and two writing sessions the pair held together in Maine. Bell also took great joy in playing Clarke favorite music from his iPod as inspiration for the new album's sound.
Among them, according to Bell: "a remix album called 'Grand 12 Inches,' by Ben Liebrand, and also the Boy George album 'Yum Yum.' Then, things like Miss Kittin and old disco stuff like Shannon, 'Let the Music Play.' And, quite a lot of Giorgio Moroder material, because I love Donna Summer."
Bell is particularly high on album track "Glass Angel," which he likens as a musical sequel to "Rock Me Gently" from Erasure's 1995 self-titled album. "It's quite surreal, the lyrics," he says. "It's a tune that came to me quite quickly, which I always love, because those tunes are kind of meant to be." Thematically, the project is about "being torn between two lovers, which is what I am going through at the moment," Bell says with a chuckle.
Erasure will debut new material this summer during the True Colors tour, which will also feature Cyndi Lauper, Blondie's Debbie Harry and the Gossip. "I feel like I'm in the company of these grand dames," says Bell of the outing, scheduled to begin in June in Seattle. From there, Erasure will play some headlining shows in North America then head to Europe. A gig at London's Royal Albert Hall is also in the works.
Meanwhile, the "Union Street" tour, which found Erasure surrounded by auxiliary musicians, is chronicled on the CD/DVD "On the Road to Nashville," due Feb. 20 via Mute. Bell says he relished the experience: "If anything, I felt safer, because there were more people on the stage and I felt the emphasis was not on me so much," he offers. "Having musicians there was really nice. Also, doing different interpretations of the songs kept it fresh for me. It's hard to put a new spin on songs you do over and over."

For the longest time, I was only familiar with their two biggest hits, "Chains of Love" and "A Little Respect". A few years ago I came across their "Pop! - 20 Hits" album and got a better appreciation of them through that. "Rock Me Gently" is also a very good song.

Billboard Review of "On The Road To Nashville"
ON THE ROAD TO NASHVILLE ERASURE Label: Mute
Erasure may have only logged three stateside hits over 20 years, but that has never slowed its ability to fill venues with steadfastly maniacal fans. Last year's acoustic tour proved once and for all that it is more than synths and camp that have made Vince Clarke and Andy Bell an enduring force, with stripped-down and wholly reconfigured new versions that reveal melodic beauty and thoughtful lyrical messages often lost in the beat. That concert is lovingly captured on this set, which includes 18 tracks on CD and an accompanying DVD from a stop at the legendary Ryman Auditorium last May. Best among many pleasant surprises are the peddle-steel-enriched "Victim of Love," the stripped-to-sweet "Oh L'Amour," the folky "Piano Song" and a rollicking hoedown reading of "Blue Savannah." A dynamic, delightful rewriting of the book.βChuck Taylor

Billboard:
ARTIST: ERASURE
SINGLE: I COULD FALL IN LOVE WITH YOU
The long-enduring Andy Bell and Vince Clarke have accomplished the seemingly impossible. For nearly 30 years, despite changes in in pop tastemaking, they managed to segue from contemporary to endearingly retro back to refreshingly auspicious with a pop/synth signature that has only occasionally strayed. "I Could Fall in Love With You," from upcoming "Light at the End of the World," sounds like so many beloved Erasure songs -- and what an acclamation. Most acts ultimately "mature" into a parody of themselves or, in an attempt to evolve, displace their founding luster. "I Could Fall" is as indelible as "Chains of Love," "Chorus" and "A Little Respect." Despite logging only three top 40 hits in the States, the duo is a persistent sellout whenever they tour. Here's a bull's-eye to the brain for proponents. Bravo to the nth degree.

I have been loving "I Could Fall In Love With You" for a couple months now. The Monteverde remixes for it a really nice and keep the flavor of the original and just take it up a notch. It's really well done. The song just debuted on the Club Play chart. It looks like it will go straight to the top.
"Sunday Girl" is the next single overseas so it may be the 2nd single here too.

"I Could Fall In Love With You" is climbing the club chart really quickly! And "Sunday Girl" is the next single. Not surprised at the success of ICFiLWY - it really is a great song. I can't really judge now, but I won't be surprised if years from now, it is as well remembered and respected as such classics as "A Little Respect" and "Blue Savannah." So psyched that album release date is almost here...

On first listen my impression is positive. A solid album from Erasure. I think "Sunday Girl" is my favorite but a lot of these tracks could do very well at clubs, especially with the right remixes.

Billboard review:
Light at the End of the World ERASURE Producer(s): Gareth Jones Genre: ELECTRONIC Label: Mute
Last year saw Erasure reinterpreting its own previously released material, albeit in an acoustic setting, on "Union Street." But for 13th studio album "Light at the End of the World," Vince Clarke and Andy Bell return to their electronic, synth-happy selves. Lead single "I Could Fall in Love With You" sets the just-right tone, with Bell belting the bittersweet lyrics, while keyboard wiz Clarke keeps the synths bright and alive. This is signature Erasure, and fans will find it pure delight. In fact, fans who have remained at Erasure's side for the past 22 years will be unable to stand still to this primarily uptempo set, particularly beat-beautiful jams like "Golden Heart," "Storm in a Teacup" and second single "Sunday Girl." Of course, Erasure being Erasure, melodies and pop hooks reign supreme throughout. βMichael Paoletta
