I am too, but it's because neither one did well, despite being fan favorites. I would argue that Androgyny should be included. It flopped in the US & UK but did well in Europe, Australia, and South America. As did BUTG...but Shirley hates that song now, so it'll never be included haha Why does Shirley hate that song? Was it cause they used it for MTV's Daria? lol

The Garbage greatest hits couldnt come out last year? My father asked for Garbage's GH for the Christmas of 2005. I ended up buying him all of their major albums instead as well as a mixed cd with their biggest hits, but man this GH would have been perfect!

I think maybe it leaves a bad taste in her mouth because it coincided with all the lows of the BG era...sickness, commercial disappointment, fan backlash, etc. Maybe that was the band's nadir and BUTG reminds her of that period. *shrugs* Most people hated the video (myself included). Also, ithe song itself is kind of the poor man's "Special".

SHE'S ALSO WORKING WITH BECK! & IT'S GOING TO BE A "DARK, MOODY" ALBUMI found another article that mentions Beck now as someone Shirley is working with on her solo album and that the album will have a very dark and moody feel.. But Paul joked to Shirley that her album might be like Blue Nile album and take ages to complete www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/tm_headline=the-razz--shirley-singing-the-blue-&method=full&objectid=18115513&site id=66633-name_page.html SHIRLEY SINGING THE BLUE Nile's Paul Buchanan pens track for Manson's comeback solo album Beverley Lyons & Showbiz Liz GARBAGE singer Shirley Manson is making her comeback after the break-up of the band . . . and she has chosen Blue Nile frontman Paul Buchanan to help her. But Paul says Shirley moved to the dark side when she asked him to write a song for her. Paul, famed for his sombre music, told the Razz: "It was a bolt out of the blue for me when Shirley asked me to write the song for her forthcoming solo album. "She wrote a really nice email to me and I said: 'Why do you want me to write you a song? You know what kind of stuff I write'. "But that's what she wanted. She wants the album to be quite dark and moody. "It was a real compliment. I was really happy to do it." The meeting of two of Scotland's finest musicians happened earlier this summer in Glasgow when Shirley popped over from her home in America to visit her family. Paul said: "We spoke about the album and I went off on my own tangent and just wrote it. "She left and went to see her family. She had planned the trip round a visit to see them all. "I wrote the song and the melody and sent it over to her and she put together the lyrics. I'm not sure what she's decided to call it." And Paul isn't the only highprofile artist Shirley approached to collaborate with. He revealed there is a list of heavyweights writing with her. "She's also working with Jack White of The White Stripes, Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumkins and Beck, so I guess that's the areas she wants to cover," said Paul. Although Garbage are set to release their greatest hits album, Absolute Garbage, in March next year, Paul says he's not quite ready to release a Blue Nile compilation yet. "It's been 25 years since we started the band. When you're an artist, you're really trying to create this one beautiful thing and make that shape over and over again. "So I wouldn't be writing a greatest hits album because I've not finished yet. I've still got lots of music I want to make. If someone tells me I've been doing this for 25 years, I say: 'What are you going to do, give me a watch?' "It's not finished yet. I don't think I've played my best game yet." Over their long career, The Blue Nile produced only four albums, taking long periods between each one. Their second, Hats, received a very rare five-star rating from Q Magazine. Fans can be sure that Paul's next project will be well worth waiting for, even though he is reluctant to reveal a release date. "I've got about six songs for the next album, but I don't want to be pushed into recording it," he said. "I'm still a bit nervous about it. In a few weeks after the tour, I'll maybe look at recording something. "It'll be one of those things, when nobody's looking I'll call up everyone and get them together in the studio." And Shirley's solo project is still very much a work in progress as well. "She's not finished with it yet," said Paul. "I joked with her that it would be like a Blue Nile album and take ages to complete." Paul Buchanan's solo tour kicks off tomorrow and his Scottish gigs are in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Perth.

www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/tm_headline=the-razz--shirley-sings-for-darfur-&method=full&objectid=18164054&site id=66633-name_page.html 27 November 2006 SHIRLEY SINGS FOR DARFUR Beverley Lyons & Showbiz Liz SHIRLEY MANSON'S first solo release will be a cover of a John Lennon song for a CD in aid of faminestricken Darfur in Africa. The Edinburgh-born, right, singer is understood to have been invited by Amnesty International to record the song for the CD expected to be released next year. Shirley is the latest star to become involved in trying to help the people of the region. In 2004, Travis's Fran Healy visited Darfur on behalf of Band Aid and the band played at the Hyde Park Live8 concert the following July. So far there has been no confirmation of which Lennon track Shirley will cover. The singer has already recruited former Jane's Addiction bass player Eric Avery, who last year toured with Garbage, to play on the charity track. I WONDER WHAT SONG IT WILL BE??? I can see her doing "Working Class Hero".

Well, the latest word from Warner UK is that Absolute Garbage is delayed until Summer 2007, so the "previously unreleased material" can be included. It takes that long to record one or two new tracks? Good God. And just wait - they won't even be "new tracks". It'll probably be leftovers from the BLM era. Garbage has such a terrible track record with releasing material on time. Their reputation in this regard is almost as notable as NIN's at this point.

Yeah Well, as long as it's earthshakingly great, I don't mind. I'm listening to beautifulgarbage for the first time in eons right now, LOL. I'm turning to comfort music, I guess, because I've been bringing out all these old albums from my fragile teen years.

Butch Vig is helping out with Shirley's album. The band also is exchanging ideas for a possible upcoming Garbage project. They are playing a special charity gig at the end of the month. www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003529208Garbage, Raitt Lead Benefit For Veteran Drummer Garbage January 08, 2007, 5:00 PM ET Jonathan Cohen, N.Y. Garbage, Bonnie Raitt, the Martinis (Joey Santiago and David Lovering of the Pixies), Keb' Mo', Victoria Williams and Tom Freund, Freedy Johnston and the Section Quartet have signed on for a benefit concert for veteran drummer Wally "Llama" Ingram, who is suffering from throat cancer. The event will be held Jan. 31 in Glendale, Calif., and was organized by Garbage's Butch Vig, who has known Ingram for more than 20 years. The pair cut their rock'n'roll teeth in Madison, Wisc., and an album by Ingram's band, Sometimes Y, was the first Vig produced at his Smart Studios complex. Ingram has gone on to play with Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman and Eric Burdon, among others. "He just found out about this throat cancer about four months ago, and he's going through really hardcore chemo and radiation," Vig tells Billboard.com. "Doctors have given him a pretty good prognosis, but he has taken a beating from the treatment. He's only in his early 40s. A lot of people in this country don't have adequate health care, so we're trying to raise some money to help cover his bills." Vig expects the evening will begin "semi-acoustic" and "become more electric by the end, with a lot of collaborating going on." Garbage, which has been on hiatus for the past year, is planning to play "an unusual set; something atypical, and two or three songs with a string quartet." Despite the layoff, the group has been sharing song ideas via the Internet in recent months and is hoping to record a few them in March. "We need to sit down in a room and play them and get them complete," Vig says. Vig has also written a couple of songs with frontwoman Shirley Manson for her in-progress solo album, but adds, "she has worked with seven or eight different people, just to see what the chemistry is like. It took awhile for her to get up to speed. She hasn't played me anything yet, but I've heard the songs are great."

www.youtube.com/watch?v=paqOK6QA_OYThis little documentary was finally uploaded onto youtube. It chronicles Garbage's April 2005 NYC show. It's a big deal because it was the day their album debuted at #4, and on a personal level, it was the day I got to meet the band. See the boa? That was the boa I gave her! In the last bit of the video you can see me taking a photo with Duke & saying "thank you so much" or something. It's kind of embarassing, but cool, too.

VH1Butch Vig Says Garbage Hiatus Is Over Garbage prepping new songs for greatest-hits setLast we heard from Garbage, in the fall of 2005, the group was going on an indefinite hiatus. Fortunately for fans, that break is not turning out like, say, Blink-182's "hiatus." "We're recording a couple new songs at the end of February," drummer Butch Vig revealed recently. "I think everyone's excited about getting back in a room and playing some music together." The new tunes will be included on a Garbage greatest-hits album the band is putting together for release later in the year. "We've been working on it for a while," Vig said. "There was originally talk about doing a B-side and remix CD as well. I'm not sure what we'll do, but we have a lot of B-sides and remixes over the years, so it would be cool to see that come out in a proper package for our hard-core fans." Garbage have also scheduled their first live performance in more than a year, at a benefit Vig is coordinating for fellow Madison, Wisconsin, drummer Wally "Llama" Ingram (Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt), who was recently diagnosed with throat cancer. "He's going through hard-core treatment and the doctors have given him a pretty good prognosis but, like a lot of musicians and lot of people in this country, he doesn't have adequate health care," Vig explained. "So I took it upon myself to rally all his friends."
The show, which will take place on January 31 at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, California, will also feature the Martinis with Joey Santiago and David Lovering of Pixies, Bonnie Raitt, Keb' Mo', Victoria Williams and other surprise guests.
"I'm encouraging all artists to play two or three songs that are in a direction that is different from what they would normally play," Vig said. "And I'm encouraging people to collaborate and do duets and come out and jam." Garbage will be performing with the Section Quartet, a string quartet known for taking on alternative-rock music. "Shirley [Manson] was pretty excited about singing with a string section, and doing something very organic," Vig said.
Ingram will be in the house and is hoping to participate in the show-closing jam. "Wally is a super upbeat guy and one of the sweetest guys in the world," Vig said. "So when I sent out a blanket e-mail, I got literally hundreds of responses. So we may do one in San Francisco and Madison as well."

A band member's admission of the GH's existence is one more reason to believe it might actually happen. But when you've been a fan for nearly a decade, you know that even that isn't enough. Popjustice's A-Z Pop entry for "This is our next single" could have been written about Garbage, if you get my drift. I suppose my reaction to this can best be described as "guarded optimism". I seriously hope they decide to do a mini-tour!

SHIRLEY HAILED AS EDINBURGH AMBASSADORNo place like home for Shirley SARAH HOWDENSHE'S been hailed as a "rock star poet" and "rock goddess extraordinaire". Coupled with double platinum selling albums, international musical acclaim and industry awards you might think Shirley Manson would be a difficult interviewee - especially as the gutsy glamour singer of rock band Garbage doesn't usually do interviews. Such fears, however, prove to be completely unfounded. There's still that unmistakable fiery red hair, the love of black eyeliner and those red lips that led to Shirley becoming the face of MAC makeup in 2002. But as the diminutive 40-year-old star strolls into the room in a vintage-looking gold and black striped shift dress and skyscraper heels, she is all smiles. Her only entourage is her mum Muriul, dad John and strikingly similar-looking sister Lindy. "I'm really happy to be here," she grins, as she scans the Lord Provost's opulent private quarters within the City Chambers. "I'm a horrible, cynical whine so this is something special." The Edinburgh born and bred singer, who grew up in Stockbridge, was awarded a civic reception on Tuesday evening for her musical achievements and her much-publicised love of the Capital which led her to be hailed as an "ambassador." And Shirley couldn't have been more proud. "I was really surprised," she says. "This means more than a lot of awards that we've had as a band. I'm very proud of where I come from and I feel this plays a large part in my success, so to be honoured by the city I grew up in is a really big deal. "It also means a lot to my family, especially my parents - they're beside themselves!" A quick glance over to mum and dad reveals just that. Both Muriul, a former big band singer, and John are beaming with pride, posing for pictures and joking with Lord Provost Lesley Hinds. Shirley says that even her rock star friends, such as Gwen Stefani, were delighted to hear of her latest accolade. "Everybody that I know - my pals - those who are really jaded, are all really chuffed for me," she admits. "I feel rather unworthy, but hey." Despite being able to entertain at sell-out shows around the world, hold her own in televised interviews and meet some of the world's biggest celebrities, Shirley is refreshingly modest for such a big star. And while she cringes slightly at being called an ambassador, it's clear she is just that. "I've had a lot of international success and I have possibly travelled to every major city in the world, so to a certain degree it's always been in my head that I'm representing my country and, in particular, my city. "It is a mind-blowingly beautiful city but we also have a liberal spirit at a time in the world where there's incredible strife. It's good to know that we Scots don't want to pick a fight with anyone - except each other! "There's an incredible bonhomie. We have a wonderful characteristic of humour and joie de vivre, as well as our many cultural and social backdrops." The interview turns to chit-chat - about her fond memories of Stockbridge, her love of the shops in St Stephen Street, the Modern Art Gallery, fish and chip shops with "that amazing brown sauce you can't get anywhere else in the world", not to mention her love of the Castle and the cobblestones. Although she now lives in Los Angeles, she still sees Edinburgh as home. "Edinburgh is still my home, definitely. I have my own house here and I still pay my taxes here!" she jokes. Often in life, we don't know what we have until it's gone, and we don't appreciate something - even our home - until it's no longer there. For Shirley, this is certainly true. "I'd totally agree," she nods, resolutely. "It stunned me that the more I travelled the more I realised how Edinburgh can hold its head up high with all of these major cities. "When I went to Paris, New York, Toyko I realised just how stunningly beautiful Edinburgh really is. I do miss it. And I do miss the Scottish sensibility a lot. Scottish people are just really funny and down to earth. "A Scotsman is a friend instantly until proven otherwise. And that is really quite rare in the world these days. "I've been on a variety of big shows abroad when they've had me on the couch and all they want to do is talk about Scotland. They don't want to talk about me or my career. And it's really lovely!" Shirley comes home as often as possible, returning to her house in Joppa for extended breaks three times last year. She has been in the Capital for the past eight weeks, chilling out and catching up with friends and family. "I was here for Christmas and New Year, the whole kit and caboodle, the whole [Hogmanay] cancellation! I ended up staying in with my sister and my mum and dad. It's my mum's birthday on Hogmanay so we always have a big family celebration." Shirley is in good spirits. A year out to re-charge those batteries has worked. But her life in the Capital wasn't always so positive. Like many teenagers, she was bullied at school, which prompted her to self-harm. And those mental scars take years to fade. "Fame doesn't make you more confident," she once said. "Maybe a lot of it stems from my childhood. Kids can be cruel and they were. They slagged me off, laughed about the way I looked and compared me to animals, bloodhounds, dead fishes." To cope with the bullying, a teenage Shirley cut herself. She has said: "There is a sense of euphoria that follows cutting yourself. The quick pinch of pain and the sight of blood snaps you back to the surface and you start to appreciate being alive." But Shirley is a fighter. She got over it. And to help prevent other teenagers go through her pain, as well as helping those who are going through it, she told her story in the documentary film CUT: Teens And Self Injury. "It needs to be talked about," she says. "I think I started cutting because I was an inarticulate teenager which came out in strange ways, and the cutting was one of them." So what's next for Shirley? And Garbage? "I'm making a solo record in Los Angeles so I'm busying myself with that. And we've got the Garbage Greatest Hits coming out this year - but we're recording another song to go in it. We want to make it really good." "I'm not putting any pressure on myself as I feel I've had that for ten years. "I've taken a year off, I've had a life, I've actually had things in my refrigerator!" And are the rumours of a Garbage split true? "Bands are like the mafia," is her carefully-worded answer. "Once you're in, you never really get out. "I love them [the band]. We just needed a break from each other. We're actually playing a benefit show together next week as a friend of ours has had throat cancer and it's hard to have medical insurance over there." So will she ever come back to Edinburgh for good? "As I get older I think I'll want to come back, but right now I have a lot of business in America," she says. "My record company are based there so it makes sense to be near them - otherwise they'll forget all about me. The girl's gotta hustle, you know." CITY GIRL WHO STRUCK GOLD WITH GARBAGE SHIRLEY MANSON learned to play the piano at seven, and later attended the City of Edinburgh Music School. Her career took off when she joined Goodbye Mr Mackenzie as a backing vocalist and keyboard player. The band became Angelfish, with Shirley taking lead vocals in 1993. Guitarist and Garbage founder Steve Marker saw Shirley perform on the video, Suffocate Me, on MTV. His offer of a position in his band was quickly accepted. The self-titled album, Garbage, released in 1995, contained hits including Stupid Girl and Only Happy When It Rains. In 1999 Shirley became a Bond Girl of sorts, when the band recorded the title track for The World Is Not Enough.

They performed "Queer", "Bleed Like Me", and "Cup of Coffee" (with a string quartet) at the benefit show last night. An all-girls choir was brought in for the "You should see my scars" section of BLM.
I'll post videos/pics when they become available.

NME REVIEWPixies men, Garbage, George Clinton play benefit show Stars come out in force to help out a friend Garbage, The Martinis (featuring Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering), and surprise guests Crowded House as well as funk legend George Clinton played a sold-out benefit show for drummer Wally Ingram in Los Angeles last night (January 31). Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Victoria Williams and Keb' Mo' also joined in on the fun, performing brief sets during the four-hour all-star benefit at the Alex Theatre to raise money for Ingram's medical bills. Ingram, a renowned percussionist who has played with most of the aforementioned artists, has been battling throat cancer. Despite his weakened condition, Ingram sat in on percussion for several artists including Raitt, Crowded House, and Crow, who dubbed him the world's most "bad-ass drummer." The evening was filled with highlights, including a rousing set by Garbage led by a fiery-haired Shirley Manson and backed by a string quartet. Crowded House made their first live appearance in more than 10 years in front of a stunned audience, as previously reported. Clinton, another surprise guest, joined Crow on stage for a funked-up version of her song 'Every Day Is A Winding Road'. And Raitt, who played guitar for Browne and Crow, got a standing ovation for belting out her hit 'Thing Called Love'. At the end of the show, the diverse factions came together for a rendition of Bob Marley's 'No Woman, No Cry' - a spectacular grand finale, despite a few sound problems. After the show, Santiago told NME.COM that his Pixies side project, The Martinis, played their first show in six years to help out their friend. "We did it all for Wally," Santiago said. "It was so good to see Wally up there playing. And it was crazy to see George Clinton!" he added. Following nearly three hours of drumming, a sweat-drenched, beaming Ingram told NME.COM, "I feel like a guy who went through hell, but now I'm in heaven." Donations for Ingram can be sent to: Wally Ingram c/o Mark Brenner 8383 Wilshire Blvd. #232 Beverly Hills, CA 90211 USA

AOL MUSIC NEWSPosted Feb 2nd 2007 12:51PM by Steve Baltin Drummer Wally Ingram may not be a household name, but a lot of his friends are and they came out in force Wednesday night at Glendale, California's Alex Theatre, to raise money for Ingram's medical bills during his fight with cancer. The marathon show was put together by Garbage's Butch Vig, whose relationship with Ingram dates back to the Wisconsin scene of the '80s. And it was Garbage, who hadn't played on stayed together since the end of the 'Bleed Like Me' tour more than a year ago, who turned in the night's most triumphant performance. Buoyed by the long break and backed by a string quartet, the band performed only three songs but left a memorable impression in that brief time. Opening with 'Queer,' the group used the strings to add a dramatic quality to the music. Frotnwoman Shirley Manson, who came onstage to a standing ovation, embraced that drama, turning in a dazzling version of 'Cup pf Coffee' that proved she can belt out a torch song with the best of them. The set ended with a stirring 'Bleed Like Me' that prompted yet another deserved standing ovation. Prior to Garbage's set, the reunited Crowded House, who will be appearing at Coachella in April, made a surprise appearance. Backed by Ingram on drums, the band, who had just flown in from New Zealand, sounded in fine form as they did a crowd-pleasing 'Weather With You' and 'Don't Dream It's Over.' Among Ingram's other friends on hand were Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and Keb Mo,' who treated the acoustic half of the show like a hootenanny, with the threesome appearing on stage together often, whether on Browne's 'World In Motion,' or a gorgeous 'Send Me an Angel' during Raitt's portion of the show. Sheryl Crow wrapped the night, leading an all-star jam that included surprise guest George Clinton.

Someone is uploading a HQ video of BLM's performance. :) LA Times - Calendar LivePOP MUSIC REVIEW Joining in the chorus Musicians of many stripes gather in Glendale for a cancer benefit focusing on survivor Wally Ingram, who sits in on drums. By Richard Cromelin Times Staff Writer February 2, 2007 Things have been quiet lately on the rock-music benefit front, with the Kerry campaign and the Katrina crisis having receded as galvanizing issues. But the musical troops were mobilized Wednesday at the 1,300-seat Alex Theatre in Glendale, where they lined up against a formidable foe that hits close to home as the members of the No Nukes generation grow older: cancer. During her segment of the show, benefit-concert perennial Bonnie Raitt told the near-capacity audience that many of her friends and relatives, including her brother, have dealt with the disease and noted that the struggle "brings out the best in us." Raitt also linked the issue to a broader concern for the environment and health, but the focus of this fundraiser was one individual: ailing drummer Wally Ingram, a longtime colleague of Raitt and some of the evening's other participants, including Jackson Browne and Sheryl Crow. Those musicians are regulars at events such as this, but Wednesday's five-hour show veered sharply from business as usual, as the specifics ofIngram's personal and professional life intertwined to generate an unusual and invigorating mix of musical styles and generations. Browne's California singer-songwriter rock and Raitt's rootsy, bluesy music are firmly identified with the '70s and '80s, but it was a more current band, Garbage, that got the most rousing welcome. One of rock's rising forces in the late '90s, the band ended a two-year hiatus Wednesday with a three-song set that reflected a renewed sense of purpose. Replacing high-voltage flash with a more understated, emotionally resonant approach, the band was joined by some of the other performers, notably the Section Quartet string section and the six-member Radiant Voices choir. Singer Shirley Manson seemed to relish the altered environment they provided, singing with focused intensity on "Queer," the dramatic ballad "Cup of Coffee" and "Bleed Like Me," which she described with a phrase from her native Scotland, "stretching a hand across a dark wave." The band's presence Wednesday traces to the personal side of Ingram's history. Garbage drummer Butch Vig and Ingram became friends in their early days in Madison, Wis., and one of the most touching segments of the concert came when other cronies from those days, including singer-songwriter Freedy Johnston, came out to play music and share memories of beer and bratwurst. Benefits such as this earn their stature by providing special surprises and collaborations, and Wednesday's unannounced set was a big one: the first performance by the reunited Crowded House, the New Zealand group that disbanded a decade ago after establishing itself as one of the leading inheritors of the Beatles' pop legacy. Ingram sat in on drums with the group, which is still auditioning replacements for its late drummer, Paul Hester. In fact, the guest of honor was all over the place, having come through treatments for cancer of the tonsils and neck with positive results. Playing congas, the full drum kit and other percussion instruments, the elfin Ingram exhibited a humble charm and unalloyed joy that helped explain why he commanded such a show of support. "This is my dream night," Ingram said to the audience near the end of the show, then joined Crow, Raitt, Browne and a group of musicians that grew to some three dozen (others included Victoria Williams, Pixies side band the Martinis and guitarist Eric McFadden, and funk visionary George Clinton made a bizarre surprise appearance). They first offered an extended take on Crow's "Everyday Is a Winding Road," then closed with an epic version of Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry." As it went on, it transcended the usual spirited jam, building to a massive scale as Browne played the part of conductor, shifting the focus from the ensemble to the strings, raising and lowering the volume, and ultimately spotlighting the refrain "Everything's gonna be all right." Something to pull out whenever the odds look long.

according to Butch (via fans), Shirley's album material has yet to be properly recorded, so it may be awhile before we get that solo record. However, the band will be returning to the studio this month to work on "new tracks". This might end up merely in new tracks for the GH album (which is coming out "IN JUNE" according to Duke). Or it could end up in an entirely new (5th) album! At this point, I'm kind of rooting for the GH & solo album. It is my understanding, however, that regardless of whether they decide to pursue a 5th album, the greatest hits package will be released this year.

This manga art thing emerged; I think it's cool/funny. Someone was a little overzealous with the boob amplification process!
