Yeah, I wouldn't call it a flop yet. The Dreamgirls soundtrack also debuted @ #20 its first week, then fell, but eventually went to #1. Not sure if this'll go #1, but I think there's a chance it might go Top 10 in a few weeks

The soundtrack is great! I loved it. If the movie does well, the soundtrack will sell. (Rhyme )

Once more people see the movie, the soundtrack may sell a little better. The movie comes out this week. But it has been a while since a soundtrack (other than Dreamgirls, High School Musicals, etc) has sold really well.

Even HSM had some extremely low debut its first week. (Like it wasn't even in the Top 100 of the Albums chart)

Why? The movie isn't even out yet. Exactly. It's the highest debuting soundtrack in some time.

Hairspray is estimated to open with between $20-30 million this weekend. That'll help sell some records for sure. The soundtrack is also up to #6 on iTunes Top Albums and Amazon!

I saw this movie today. the theater was full of elderly ladies, it was kind of strange. My daughter wanted to see it because of Zach Efron and Amanda Bynes. The movie wasn't bad, it's no dreamgirls or chicago that's for sure. There was only one song that I would buy and that was sung by Queen Latifah and I think it was called I Know Where I've Been. that song was AMAZING! the rest were forgetable.

Billboard.biz:
The new "Hairspray" film soundtrack, powered by a media blitz and a No. 3 opening at the U.S. and Canada box office last weekend, zooms 20-4 in its second week on the chart. It's up 95% with a total of 72,000 sold for the week. The movie earned $27.5 million at the box office, coming in third behind "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" and "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."
"Hairspray" is the fifth soundtrack to log time in the top 10 this year, following "Hannah Montana," "Hannah Montana 2," "Dreamgirls" and "Jump In!" ... Go figure then, that the four top-selling soundtracks of 2007 so far are those same titles ... Coming in at No. 5 on the year-to-date tally is "High School Musical," followed by "Daddy's Little Girls," "Broken Bridges," "Cars," "Happy Feet" and the deluxe edition of "Dreamgirls" rounding out the top 10.

since it's #1 on itunes.... and i've seen this selling well in all stores i've been in, i wonder if this will go top 3 on billboard.
it is an amazing soundtrack to an excellent film.
The Nicest Kids In Town Ladies' Choice (my favorite) Run and Tell That Without Love and You Can't Stop The Beat all really get my pumped at the gym. it's motivation to run an extra 4.5 minutes!
LOVE this soundtrack. it'll go double platinum at least.

Warner Music Has a Non-Hit in 'Hairspray'Here's another sad week for Warner Music Group, aka WMG, which I like to call Warner Miscellaneous Group. The soundtrack CD to "Hairspray" is a top five hit this week, but it isn't theirs. As WMG's stock sinks lower day by day, "Hairspray" is a hit that might have been. You see, "Hairspray" is on New Line Records, a division of New Line Cinema, which itself is part of Time Warner. Before Time Warner sold WMG to Edgar Bronfman Jr., et al, they would probably have released the "Hairspray" CD through WEA (that's the WMG distribution arm) and made a little dough. Alas, New Line Records is now distributed through independent Alternative Distribution Alliance and not through WEA. The money from the "Hairspray" CD is going directly to savvy New Line Cinema execs Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne. What's interesting is that New Line Records exists at all. They even have their own Web site that features a roster of 11 artists separate from their soundtracks. For instance, they have Albert Hammond Jr., of The Strokes, who is the son of the man who penned and sang the great classic "It Never Rains in Southern California." Who knew? Apparently, no one. The Hammond album, called "Yours to Keep," released in March, got great reviews and also had a video directed by Joaquin Phoenix. But in keeping with the record biz's stealth approach to putting out new music, the whole thing was kept a secret. And very effectively, I might add. New Line Records would do well to hire a good publicist and put some money into promotion. Hammond would be a good place to start. Warner Miscellaneous Group's stock price was around $12.76 in after-hours trading last night. A little over a year ago it was $30. The company gives its quarterly report on Aug. 7. That should be quite a conference call. The rest of the WMG releases are all in the bottom reaches of the charts, including the very recent Smashing Pumpkins comeback CD, which has sort of petered out after one week at the top.
