Ew... Her voice doesn't even sound good in that version. Ugh. What a waste.

Celine Dion is my kind of 'over-emoting schmaltz-bot'

D.L. Stewart
I love to listen to Celine Dion.
There . . . I said it and I'm glad.
But, hey, what do I know about music? I also enjoy listening to Barbra Streisand, Luciano Pavarotti, Aretha Franklin, Josh Groban, Linda Ronstadt and Bob Seger. So, clearly, I have a tin ear and should not be allowed to own an iPod.
Because some guy who has a blog just included her on his list of The Ten Most Annoying Singers.
At least he didn't say she was the most annoying singer. Celine - and the millions of fans who buy her CDs and records because they don't know any better - will be relieved to hear that she was only No. 10 on the list, and that this guy thinks Michael Bolton is the most annoying singer.
I don't know who the guy is or what his credentials are, and I don't care enough to find out. It's possible that he is a professor of music at Juilliard and regularly stars in lead roles at the Metropolitan Opera. At the very least, he must be pretty authoritative if he has his own blog, because there still are at least 100 Americans who don't have one.
And, whatever his credentials, he certainly is not alone in his opinion. When it comes to media opinions, Celine Dion seems to be Canada's version of George W. Bush.
"I think most people would rather be processed through the digestive tract of an anaconda than be Celine Dion for a day," one critic wrote. Which seems rather extreme to me, although maybe it depends on the size of the anaconda.
An obviously uber-hip reviewer for nymag.com sneered that she is ". . . an overemoting schmaltz-bot who has somehow managed to convert the ethos of Wal-Mart into sine waves and broadcast them, at kidney-rupturingly high volume, directly into our internal soulPods."
I don't know what a lot of that means, but it doesn't sound like he's a big fan. Or maybe he's just grumpy because of his ruptured kidney.
Reviewing a book written about her, the music critic for the Denver Post began by declaring: "There's dislike, and then there's hatred, and when it comes to artists who make you want to run screaming in the other direction, Celine Dion bests most." The many who openly detest her, he added, view her "ubiquitous presence as a blight on the cultural skyline."
Even the author of the book being reviewed characterized her music as "Oprah Winfrey-approved chicken soup for the consumerist soul."
Celine, I'm sure, has not lost a lot of sleep over the critics' opinions. You can sleep quite well on a mattress stuffed with multimillions of dollars. But, every time I read reviews like those I have to question my musical taste, because I always thought she had one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard.
Now that I know that some blogger thinks her voice is one of the 10 most annoying, though, I'll probably stop listening to her. And anyone who ever has bought a Celine Dion album should immediately throw them away.
All 200 million of them.

Celine Joins Exclusive Club:
Celine Dion tops the 50,000,000 mark in album sales during the Nielsen/SoundScan era, just five weeks after Mariah Carey reached that same milestone. Dion's total jumps to 50,010,000. Carey's jumps to 50,811,000.) These are the only female artists in the 50 million club. They're also the only female artists with five albums each on Nielsen/SoundScan's all-time list of the top 200 albums.
While being the second female artist to cross the 50,000,000 plateau is bound to take some of the luster off the achievement, it really shouldn't. And Dion is ahead of Carey in one key respect. Dion is the only woman with three albums in the top 50 of the Nielsen/SoundScan era (Falling Into You at #10, Let's Talk About Love at #22 and All The Way...A Decade Of Song at #44). Carey has just one in the top 50 (Daydream at #46).
Only two artists in Nielsen/SoundScan history have sold more albums than Carey and Dion-Garth Brooks, whose current total is 67,847,000 and the Beatles (56,247,000). All four of these artists first hit the chart before Nielsen/SoundScan set up shop in May 1991, so these totals don't take into account their entire histories. The Nielsen/SoundScan data doesn't include the first four months of Dion's chart history, the first 11 months of Carey's, the first two years of Brooks' and the first 27 years and four months of the Beatles'--during which time I have it on good authority that the group sold a fair number of records!

Ugh, I hate how this album has been handled. It's like Sony only cared about it selling just enough for them to make their money back, as opposed to really selling well. A well-established artist like Celine shouldn't have such a hard time selling a million CDs and getting radio play. She should have hit a million in the US by the end of December, not JUST NOW, if it's even happened yet. Doesn't help that Sony has yet to release a follow-up single in the US...or make any decent videos for singles they HAVE released elsewhere.
Frankly, it's one of my favorite Celine albums ever. It's solid, shows Celine taking a few risks, and she's in top voice.
