Sigel Bounces Back With 'The Solution'

Philadelphia rapper Beanie Sigel has R. Kelly in his corner on "All of the Above," the first single from his new album, "The Solution." Due Dec. 11 via State Property/Roc-A-Fella, the set also sports guest appearances by Scarface, Styles P and Rahaeem DeVaughn.

"At this point in my career, I don't feel like I have anything to prove," Sigel tells Billboard.com. "I make, good meaningful music. Even though some people don't get the big picture -- they only see the frame."

A video for "All of the Above" is in the works from director Jessy Terrero ("Soul Plane"). Other album tracks include "I'm In," which samples Luther Vandross' "Make Me a Believer," the Marvin Gaye-inspired "Children" and the Dre & Vidal-produced "The Day."

"The Solution" is the follow-up to 2005's "The B.Coming," which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

This Philadelphia-based MC, one of several Jay-Z protégés who have yet to attain that level of fame, describes in more detail than most rappers the criminal demimonde that gangsta rap alternately glorifies and laments. And Beanie Sigel knows what he's talking about: In addition to three previous studio discs, his résumé reflects several run-ins with the law, including a recent one-year prison sentence on a federal gun charge. Sigel's familiarity with the dark side unquestionably gives "The Solution" the air of realism gangsta rap fans prize. Yet thanks to a production tapestry long on mournful soul-music sounds (as well as a surprisingly effective sample of James Blunt's "No Bravery"), the album is also a downer, with little of the high-life swagger Jay uses as a drugs-and-guns counterweight. Depressing but arresting.—Mikael Wood

Beanie Sigel, The Solution: * * * (out of four) Not a problem

The Broad Street Bully is never short on gun talk, but he bolsters the street narratives with a healthy dose of introspection and occasional humor. The Philadelphia native makes a stab at radio friendliness with the thuggish club banger All of the Above, featuring R. Kelly, but it’s on deeper tracks about inner conflicts, parenthood and overcoming obstacles that Sigel truly shines.
