She needs a major label in my opinion. If her CD has done so well on an indie label, it is no reason why it could not at least be Gold by now on a major label. Look at 2004's More maybe? "More" never reached gold status. None of the singles ("Officially Missing You", "Questions", and "Still") really caught on. In her defense though that was the labels fault and Tamia's as well. She was diagnosed with MS (So you really can't fault her for that) However, I remember a large gap with Officially Missing You being the first single and dropping like a year before the album even hit stores. Her album was delayed because of her illness...and then we were given that So Into You collabo with Fabolous which wasn't even really her single but the label then pushed Questions but that didn't go anywhere. Questions was a great R & B record but at that time people at Epic were losing their jobs and new people were coming in. It must suck being at a label when new people are working on your project.

Yeah, I remember the 'More' era being a fiasco, but I think 'Between Friends' really worked out for Tamia even though she is independant.

It also didn't help that her original label (Elektra) basically folded and was absorbed by Atlantic who didn't have a clue what to do with Tamia or her project. Sylvia released the album more as a courtesy to Tamia than anything.

New article: Canadian singer overcomes obstacles to find success BY Jon Sarpong June 12, 2008 01:13 PM "At the moment, I think Canada's music scene is absolutely amazing," says Grammy-award winning Canadian songstress Tamia. "When I was growing up, I always felt like you had to go to the States to become famous. But now, Canadian artists can decide whether or not they want to go to the States - and if they decide to stay home, they can still have a great career." Tamia knows first-hand the emotional difficulty of leaving home in order to pursue a career in the recording industry. She got an early start in the music business, moving from her home in Windsor, at the request of super producer Quincy Jones. Hand-picked by Jones, Tamia, crooned her way to stardom on You Put a Move on My Heart, the first single from the 1994 hit album Q's Jook Joint. "Being away was difficult at first," she says. "But Quincy really taught me a lot about the industry and life. Early on he kept instilling the value of ownership; I mean he owns everything he does, and he kept telling me to keep that in mind. His lessons were something I remembered when I decided to venture out on my own." Tamia's latest release, Between Friends, is wholly owned by Plus One Music Group, a record label that she founded and that works in partnership alongside her long-established publishing company. "It took me a bit of time in the industry to realize that if you want to be the one who determines your image and you want to call the shots and be in control of your life, you have to be the boss," she admits. "I think it was just more of a natural progression for me. I've been in the industry since I was 17, and so I've really been directed and told what to do since then. But if you are ever in a position to own the thing which you are creating and be in control of your life, I think you have to go for it." The constant support of her husband, NBA basketball player Grant Hill, has also helped to build strong family ties. Through devotion and commitment to their relationship, the two prominent figures have managed to maintain a solid bond in the midst of two very hectic schedules. "Everybody always asks me how Grant and I do it, how do we maintain any kind of sanity with our busy schedules," she says. "My husband is in the NBA and he's travelling all the time, and with my career I'm always working. But we've figured out a system that works for us. Mind you, people forget that my husband is off for nearly half the year. There are literally months where we spend every day together, and then, by the time the season starts up again, we're both glad to give each other a little space!" In 2005, Tamia was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an oftentimes debilitating disease that jeopardized the singer's career. "A lot of people ask me whether I ever wanted to stop singing and performing after the diagnosis," she points out. "To be honest with you, I never entertained the thought of ending my career. I am a singer and a performer and I wasn't going to stop being myself because of this illness." Fans of the entertainer couldn't be happier with her decision. Sales of Between Friends have beaten expectations and Tamia is working feverishly to maintain the disc's success. "I try not to over-think life," she says. "I have goals, of course, but I really try to maintain a sense of balance. I think that the best thing that anyone can do is just learn to take things as they come." It's weird that she recorded the best album of her career without a major labels support though. She had 3 great videos (more than what she got for her last project) and a couple of r&b hits. I wonder if her album would have done as well on a majro label? There is something about grassroots marketing that can be more effective for some artists than a major label.

I think it probably would have done just as well overall sales-wise. Usually, major record labels can move the same amount of units as an indie label. The difference lies in the amount of money. It costs less money, usually, for indie labels, so artists receive a more significant portion of the revenue. Also, a major label would not have been as patient with the project. It would have been 2 singles at most with 2 cheap videos probably.

Tamia actually wants to re-sign with a major label but she's hesitant to pursue it because she doesn't think that there's any major label out there that would be willing to give her both the creative input, freedom, and $$$ that she wants.

Yay! I'll be copping that.
The "Real Life Divas" program was really good. David Foster appeared on it and had really good things to say about Tamia. Tamia also teared up during one of the interview segments.

The BET show was really good. It was so sad when she brought up being diagnosed with MS.

www.blackvoices.com/blogs/2008/08/22/bv-scene-beyonce-tamia-gordon-chambers-sheryl-underwood-gmw/R&B darling Tamia recorded her first live album at the Lincoln Theater in Washington, DC recently. The Canadian-bred singer, one of the only R&B singers having success as an independent artist, told me before the recording: "I was like, 'I haven't done a live album. Let's do a live album!'" And so she did! She sang all of her biggest hits, songs like 'You Put A Move On My Heart,' 'Stranger In My House,' 'Officially Missing You,' 'Can't Get Enough' and 'I'm So Into You.' The 33-year-old biracial beauty also added some covers of songs like Sheila E's 'The Glamorous Life,' Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown's 'No Air' and Musiq Soulchild's 'Love' in the mix as well. Tamia's husband, NBA star Grant Hill was also there to support his wife and surprised the crowd by getting on the keyboards and playing Force M.D.'s 'Tender Love.' During the concert's encore, Hill also brought up his friend from the Washington, DC go-go band Junkyard and entertained the crowd with an energetic performance of 'Sardines and Pork N Beans.' No word on when Tamia's live album, which was produced by one of my favorite producers Shep Crawford, will hit stores.

International Arts Festival celebrates 20 years of world musicPosted by Keith Marszalek, NOLA.com October 08, 2008 9:41AM Headlining this year's roster of local, national and international acts is Canadian rhythm and blues singer Tamia. The musical lineup for the 20th annual International Arts Festival, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday on Scout Island in City Park, reflects the goal of festival organizers: To bring an eclectic mix of Caribbean-related music, reggae, hip-hop and world music to a city known best for its jazz. Headlining this year's roster of local, national and international acts is Canadian rhythm and blues singer Tamia. Having garnered a handful of Grammy nominations, Tamia has carved a space for herself amongst the neo-soul and hip-hop stars by incorporating a hefty dose of pop and electronic undertones into her crisp vocals. Also slated to perform is New Orleans native turned Atlanta dance and party music-music Lloyd, reggae heavy-hitters Morgan Heritage and West Coast hip-hop tour-de-force The Game. The festival sets up shot on Saturday and Sunday on Scout Island in City Park. Along with the music, Founded in 1987, the International Arts Festival, is another grass-roots organization that raises money to support local cultural, civic and educational programs in New Orleans. The foundation, formerly known as Reggae Riddums, has in the past faced challenges, including bad weather. But the festival has endured, providing a weekene of Caribbean-themed music, arts and food to the Crescent City. This year, the festival had been slated for Sept. 12, but was delayed due to Hurricane Gustave. Festival organizers say they are committed to keeping the event in New Orleans. "New Orleans is the city we love and will continue to support and assist the rebuilding process," Ernest Kelly, founder of the International Arts Festival, said in a press release.
