I looove this little elvish man/boy/child/minx. He's gained a cult following for playing various shades of, um, "art folk", but has recently exploded into the sub-mainstream with the glammier, campier The Magic Potion, which is his third release. It's a tremendous album, and I can't see fans of Mika denying Wolf's charms. (Arguably, Wolf is a far more accomplished musician and performer than Mika, and he has critical tidings to boot). Check him out! Beat Rolling Stone & Spin or whoever else will "discover" him this summer in the US, weeks after his album is released here in May. NO HOMOPHOBIA IN HERE!
As for Patrick Wolf, I was to start a thread on this album for, like, ages! But for some reason, never got started. At least there's one.

As I see it, we are all "omnisexual", just like Sophie B. Hawkins. *trumpets with joy*

It's not so random. I saw that quote in the nostalgia thread, and thought it was fabulous.
Patrick on his sexuality: “In the same way I don’t know if my sixth album is going to be a death-metal record or children’s pop, I don’t know whether I’m destined to live my life with a horse, a woman or a man. It makes life easier.” He encourages other guys to 'raid their mother's make-up box', as do I.
It's true. You just never know what course that river is going to take! I know I don't.

I know it's not that random. Let's just say that Sophie B. herself... how do I say this... plays for the home team.

I know it's not that random. Let's just say that Sophie B. herself... how do I say this... plays for the home team. MAYBE TODAY SHE DOES. TOMORROW IT COULD BE A DIFFERENT STORY. Sophie's orientation is ephemeral, like her career.

Oh yeah. Well, he's an honorary member, so he's not ALWAYS required to attend meetings of our not-so-unofficial organization.

The Magic Position is a nice album although I probably prefer Wind In The Wires at this point (although The Magic Position will probably grow on me in time). Bluebells was a great single and the title track is good as well.

Patrick Wolf to Tour With Amy Winehouse His latest "magic position": holding her hair back while she pukes In a seemingly discordant pairing, orchestra-wielding pop sophisticate Patrick Wolf and swamp thing Amy Winehouse will team up for a few North American dates in early May. Wolf, whose lovely Magic Position will arrive Stateside May 1 via Low Altitude/Universal, has also added an in-store at the Virgin Records in New York's Union Square, where he'll whisk about onstage and then write his name on stuff. As we previously reported, Pat's recent projects include an abundance of UK-only singles. Wolf parade: 04-18 Lisbon, Portugal - Lux Club 04-19 Braga, Portugal - Teatro Circo 04-21 Cologne, Germany - Gebäude 9 04-23 Berlin, Germany - Roter Salon 04-24 Hamburg, Germany - Mandarin Casino 04-25 Munich, Germany - Ampere 04-26 Basel, Switzerland - Das Schiff 04-27 Donau, Austria - Donau Festival 04-30 New York, NY - Virgin Records Union Square 05-02 Minneapolis, MN - Varsity Theater * 05-03 Chicago, IL - Vic Theatre * 05-05 Philadelphia, PA - Electric Factory * 05-07 Boston, MA - Avalon Ballroom * 05-09 New York, NY - The Highline Ballroom * 05-12 Toronto, Ontario - Mod Club * 05-13 Toronto, Ontario - Mod Club * * with Amy Winehouse

Amy was supposed to perform at Schubas that night. I hope this does not mean that the Schubas shows will be cancelled now. >:( I would much prefer to see Amy at Schubas than at the Vic. Still, that is a nice double bill.

Guest List: Patrick WolfWelcome to the latest edition of Pitchfork's Guest List. Each week, we ask one of our favorite artists to fill us in on what they've been up to lately: which tracks they can't stop spinning, what books they can't put down, and what new bands they've caught on tour. This week it's Patrick Wolf, who recalls stumbling upon a gypsy concert in a Hackney warehouse, discusses his favorite exotic BBC weather report, and explains exactly what a virginal is. >> Favorite New Songs of the Past Year No Bra: "Do Her Fuck Her" It's a really great song. Almost industrial German music, but really great, an amazing sense of humor and really-- it's a friend of mine, Susanne, from No Bra. Really great music. Bishi: "Namaste" That's actually a song I helped produce a long time ago; it's part of her album Nights at the Circus. It's a very beautiful song about the death of her grandfather. She's somebody that you'll be seeing a lot of in the next couple of years, for sure. She's kind of an up and coming pop star in England. >> Favorite Older Songs at the Moment I've been listening to a lot of Elizabethan renaissance music again. It's kind of my inspiration at the moment. And the greatest would be... Henry Purcell: The Death of Queen Mary It's a funeral march for the death of Queen Mary. It's like six different funeral marches; I've been listening a lot to that recently. Osvaldo Golijov: Ayre He's actually a very recent composer, which is great, he has done an album called Ayre, which is very amazing, using a lot of electronics, but it's like a big, kind of Hungarian opera, but using lots of very progressive electronic elements. It's very inventive, a lot more inventive than a lot of so-called IDM music. >> Favorite New Band M.I.A. I've just fallen in love in the last couple of days with her work. She's great. I love "Bird Flu". I met her recently, and I'm a very, very big supporter of her work, and her attitude and what she stands for. >> Best Recent Concert I guess the most exciting show I've seen recently was on the outskirts of London in Hackney. Because the Olympics are moving in, they're shutting down all the gypsy communities, and so there was this last show in a warehouse where all the gypsy bands were playing, and they still sing in Romani gypsy, and of course I have no idea what any of the bands were called, but it was a wonderful night. I think that was probably the last most inspiring show-- there are actually loads and loads of Romani gypsy bands around at the moment, but of course they can't get any publicity or anything, so I just wish I knew the names of them, because it's all in Romani. I tend to fall into these things by mistake. It was in this big warehouse, and if you walk around that area, you can hear it, because basically it's all squats, so you hear this music playing and then you kind of just walk in and join in the party. I got my hand burned on a stove as well. They had a big boiler in the middle of the room, and I tried to climb over the boiler, and I didn't realize it was switched on, so I burned my hand. But it was all part of a good night. >> Last Great Film I Saw Marie Antoinette Amazing. I saw it because, of course I'm very attracted to the story of Marie Antoinette, and then because Marianne Faithfull was in it as well, so I thought I should check it out. But the movie was just absolutely beautiful. I don’t know why anybody slagged it off when it came out. I'm a big fan of Sofia Coppola's work. As a new movie, it really, for me, fits in the same canon as a great Derek Jarman or a great Sally Potter film. >> Last Great Book I Read A collection of poetry by Dylan Thomas. I think it was just a general collection of his poetry. >> Favorite Piece of Musical Equipment My viola, of course. If I lost everything I would always save my viola, above any personal item at all. Above anything at all, even people, I would save my viola. I used to compose a lot more [with the viola] than I do now. I compose classically on the viola, not so much for my erratic Patrick Wolf stuff. I’m trying to bring it in a lot more, but as a songwriting instrument it's actually quite hard. It has limitations, although limitations can be quite exciting as well. I tend to write one song a year as Patrick Wolf on the viola. I tend to use it for classical work and film stuff >>Favorite Record Store Just go to any good charity shop or thrift store, because there are so many amazing records, you know, vinyl. My recommendation to the youth of today would be to get a record player and save your money for the old audio and vinyl and just choose something with a great fun cover: generally it's going to be a great record. Just explore-- there's so much great music out there. I just bought a ton of records because I got this amazing new record player. My favorite one is called "Taxi" by a German singer called Daliah Lavi. She's a long-lost German pop singer from the 70s. Great songs about hailing taxis and stuff. It's good. >> Best Purchase of the Past Year I recently bought a virginal, which is a harpsichord, but it's a very old harpsichord, from before harpsichords. It's very gentle, and I think it's apparently legendarily made for ladies-in-waiting, so it has a very quiet, conservative sound, but if you play it quite hard-- I'm just getting into this, since I have so many of course. I also bought this great new record-player; it's called "Magical Music Books". It's in an old wooden box and it plays old gramophone records and 45s and 33s and it's got a tape deck and a CD player and a radio, all in one. It’s amazing, and it looks like a gramophone. >> Best Thing I Did This Year Release my album. Finally get it out and get it finished; it was a big job. It almost killed me, you know. >> Favorite Music Venue The Royal Albert Hall, London I like that place. I've seen so much great classical music there. They have the proms there every year, it's like £2 to get in, and I’ll just go there and listen to music one night. They're not very progressive at all with their choices, but the acoustics are absolutely to die for. Maybe I can play there someday [laughs]. If Elton John can do it, I'm sure I can. >> Favorite TV Show "Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs" At 5:30 in the morning there's a show for kids called "Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs" that calms me down all the time. I was having a big argument with my friend, and all he did was switch on the TV and sit me down in front of the TV until I calmed down. It's about a boy with a bucket full of magical dinosaurs and he goes on adventures with them everyday. It's quite well animated. I was almost quite scared because I have so many dinosaurs in my flat as well, and I thought somebody had just been into my life and stolen it and turned it into a cartoon. >> Favorite Video Game "Metroid" I used to have an NES, that’s what I still have. I like "Metroid", the original one, not what it is now. And "Castlevania". >> Favorite Radio Show The Shipping Forecast In Britain we're an island, you know, so after the news, at 12 midnight they have 10 minutes of a news-reader reading out the weather for ships. It's more important than the weather in a way. It's very romantic; I know a lot of people that that's their favorite radio show. You basically close your eyes, and they read out all the weathers on the sea around England. I've always been very inspired by that. You can just escape, put your headphones on, and they read out places you'll never go in your life. They read almost out to the North Sea, exactly what the temperature is and what the waves are. It's a drug-free adventure. >> My Ringtone I've lost four mobiles in the past year, so I don't even bother buying ringtones anymore. I used to make them myself, the atonal ones. I destroyed one Blackberry because I hated it and I hated being connected to instant communication to the world. And the mobile phones, I tend to get drunk and lose phones all the time, or get mugged. It's communication that we're too obsessed with today. I want to go back to a more simple way of getting through the world and through the day. You can buy my songs as a ringtone in England, and my friends buy them as a joke. Then they come back, and they've got my songs on their phone. It's terrifying.

Patrick Wolf: "My final concert will be this November"Twenty-something best new music-maker Patrick Wolf may be reconsidering this whole pop-auteur thing. Responding to his drummer-clockin' bug-out at a recent New York show, Wolf -- in a post on a Wolf fan message board apparently from the man himself -- went on to reveal that he may be quitting live music, and indeed "public communications," for good: "I have made a decision, my final concert will be this november, a retrospective with an orchestra in London. I am not sure whether there will be anymore public communications after that, In fact I am pretty sure there will be none. Of course, this has nothing to do with my drummer.. but a creative clock is ticking and I have many many projects to be creating with my time left on this earth. I hope to share my last shows with you this year... I have enjoyed making and performing music for you all, I have enjoyed trying to give a little hope and inspiration to the world. But I feel, especially when I read all this and I go about my days that I have failed." Seems sudden fame's hit the poor guy hard. In arriving at his decision, Wolf had this to say: "I dont think when I was 16 and dreamt of releasing records there would ever be so much crazy speculation about the person I am and that you want me to be. I have become so tired of this behaviour, sometimes I wake up and have to do six hours of interviews before doing a show, then go straight to bed to sleep a couple of hours to fly to a new country to be cross examined in the same way.. I dont know what is left of me sometimes, some mornings i dont know how i get on the flight or even open my mouth to sing that night..." Check out Wolf's complete post, including a detailed explanation of the drummer incident, here. Again, this could indeed be a fake-out -- we have been burned by this sort of thing before, after all -- but if it's not, howlin' cries will resound from fans of the Wolfman.

Pitchfork: Patrick Wolf Explains His "Retirement" NME: Patrick Wolf denies he is qutting musicPatrick Wolf has denied that he is quitting music, despite a posting that he would on his messageboard. As previously reported Wolf posted on that he was to play his final gig in November and then quit the music industry for good. He posted: "My final concert will be this November. I am not sure whether there will be anymore public communications after that. In fact, I am pretty sure there will be none." However, Wolf has now told Pitchfork that the message was just meant for his online community and surprised when it reached a wider audience. "I never said I was quitting music, and second of all, I never did it in a public way... For me to say I was going to quit music is like saying I'm going to commit suicide," he said. "It's the most extreme thing that could happen in my life. That would make me miserable, so I would never say I was quitting music, because I would never know where to start." He said the message he was intending to get across that he was not going to tour as much or do as many interviews in future. He added he is currently working on new music: "I've got so many projects... I've got this double record... It might be called 'Hard Times' and I might be working with Alec Empire and Atari Teenage Riot." Wolf is to release 'The Magic Position' in the US on May 1.

I never really thought he would retire from music. I could see him becoming a Kate Bush type recluse, who never tours and does limited promotion, public appearances and interviews and who releases a new album every few years.

He'll also hit San Diego's Beauty Bar and Las Vegas' Art Bar before concluding his North American jaunt at San Francisco's Cafe du Nord on May 21. He'll then head back across the pond for several UK and European festival dates throughout the summer, as previously announced. The newly added dates are: Los Angeles, CA Troubadour (May 16) San Diego, CA Beauty Bar (18) Las Vegas, NV Art Bar (19) San Francisco, CA Cafe du Nord (21) Wolf's latest album, 'Magic Position', came out in the US last week.

Patrick Wolf wins over LA crowdPatrick Wolf charmed a sold-out crowd at the Troubadour in Los Angeles last night (May 16). Performing his first LA show in four years, he ran through tracks from all three of his albums, focusing on the most recent, 'The Magic Position', and frequently choosing songs at random to the surprise of his bandmates. Wolf was backed by a viola/violin player, a double bass, a drummer and a laptop - a far cry from his 2003 tour, which he told the audience consisted of he and his manager driving from city to city without a visa and sneaking into clubs because he was underage. Dressed in shorts, suspenders and a gingham shirt that he tore off by the end of the night, he leapt across the stage and theatrically threw his 6'4" body to the ground. "This song was written when I was a troubadour with nothing but a ukulele on my back and a ticket to Cornwall," he said when introducing the song 'Tristan', and the crowd went wild. During the evening, Wolf sang lyrics from Justin Timberlake's 'Sexy Back' and referred to Paris Hilton's latest escapades, singing, "Paris Hilton got sent to jail". He also spontaneously broke into a rendition of 'Moon River' from the film 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. Wolf said goodnight after an hour-and-a-half set, and was brought back for an encore by an extremely enthusiastic crowd. He concluded with the rousing 'Accident & Emergency' and 'A Boy Like Me'. Wolf played: 'Overture' 'Get Lost' 'To The Lighthouse' 'Pigeon Song' 'Tristan' 'Bluebells' 'Libertine' 'Childcatcher' 'Moon River' 'Stars' 'The Magic Position' 'The Fiddle & The Drum' 'Accident & Emergency' 'A Boy Like Me'

New Patrick Wolf - "The Marriage"So that whole "My final concert will be this November" thing was a hoax, or maybe just a young man coming to terms with the endless scrutiny of slow-building stardom. Anyway, Wolf saved saved this glitchy, theatrical gem from the Magic Position sessions for a B-side treat, making a nice reconciliatory treat for fans and skeptics alike. We're glad you reconsidered, Patrick. Hear it at the link.
