lmao this is my classic "indie elitist" icon that scored me big fans on last.fm I love it. 99% of people realize it's pure sarcasm, but there is always someone who misses the hint. lmao! Did anyone seriously add you on Last.FM or something thinking you're serious? Hahah. lmao only a few...and I straightened them out more added me just because they knew it was a joke this blog entry ("anti-Pitchfork" in nature) caused an uproar, though, back in June: www.last.fm/user/shirleebee/journal/2006/06/14/156169/

I saw Lily live last night and it was a great show. She was engaging and charming and her backup band sounded great.
I was not keeping a close tab on the set, but from what I remember she played pretty much all of "Alright, Still" and she added a few covers as well. She had an acoustic version of "Everybody's Changing" by Keane and "Naive" by the Kooks, as well as a full band version of "Blank Expression" from the Specials as part of the encore.

I'm not veeery familiar with Pitchfork but I know a bit [and after reading that, I'm not sure if I want to know more] but I can see that kind of attitude reflected in many people I know. "I've long held the belief that the e-mag is full of elitist, horn-rimmed pricks who refuse to grant a note of praise to anyone who may actually approach gold status, while bands with horribly awkward names who have barely been in existence for 8 months are adorned in golden halos of breathless acclaim." I love that. Ha. Like I said, apart from the whole I-don't-really-like-stripped-down-singer/songwriter stuff (hey - Jewel IS my favorite singer) I agree with it. Time to read through some of the comments. :)

Thanks! ;)
Ooh, Lily was just on TRL. It would be neat if she could get on the countdown. I'm seeing her tomorrow! I sort of can't believe it because I've been sick all week & have soo much work to do for school. I'll get in concert mode soon enough, though. (And now one of my papers has been delayed a week, so I don't have to hurry home right away!) Maybe I'll get to meet her.

I definitely hope I get to see her one day. I hope you have fun! I think "Smile" has a good shot at TRL success.

the remix program is sooo addictive I forgot the CD came with that software for the longest. lol. It's alright but it'd be cooler if it let you play around with all the songs on the album. I do enjoy my minimalist versions of "Smile" and "Knock 'Em Out" though. lol.

Lily Allen is the poor man's Regina Spektor. LOL, what a lame comparison. Come back when you can say something like that without sounding silly.

LOL! If anything Regina is the poor man's Nelly McKay. Anyway.... her show was so good last night! I'm pretty tired & hungover, so I don't have the energy to write a detailed review, but I'll elaborate later. The essentials: Lily's Setlist:LDN Nan, You're a Window Shopper Knock 'Em Out Shame for You Cheryl Tweedy Littlest Things Take What You Take Everybody's Changing (Keane) Naive (Kooks) Not Big Absolutely Nothing Everything's Just Wonderful Friend of Mine Friday Night Smile Encore: Blank Expression Alfie ^I was surprised to see that the crowd seemed to know all the words to all the songs, even the b-sides, etc. It was a pleasant shock. Then again, it was NYC, aka hipster central, so we all had the CD 8 months ago anyway. ;) Performance wise? Better than expected. She must have improved considerably from the time the early middling live reviews were circling around the blogosphere; she actually is capable of rousing quite a visible bodily reaction from the audience when she chooses to. In the live setting, the uptempo songs revealed themselves as less polished, a little more "rock" in nature : The percussion and bass components were accentuated and in some cases (e.g. "Friday Night"), when the brass section kicked in, a true old school ska energy was in the air - you almost could skank to it (seriously!). There were several instances where the crowd was positively jumping. Good to see. Lily herself is quite adorable in person: she had on a Stepford style big-skirted dress (no doubt it was Chloe or some other posh line), her trainers, and f**kING GOLD AK-47 BLING-BLING PENDANT. It was so ridiculously gaudy & incompatible with overall context of her outfit that you had to admire her brass for wearing it. But in fact, her whole appearance is based on contradiction and irony, so I suppose it was actually rather appropriate. In any case, she's cute, shapely, and a spirited performer. Her occasional crowd interaction was witty and endearing (she mentioned she had been depressed earlier that day, but then she ordered in some Shepherd's Pie & it made everything better); she doesn't off as the "stroppy b***h" she's painted to be, but at the same time, you wouldn't want to cross paths with her on a bad day, I'm sure. She took shots, drank tea, and smoked throughout the entire performance. She had a special touch-screen monitor set up which was supposed to appear to function as a special fx simulator, but was actually a lyrics prompter (it was, trust me). Memory weaknesses aside, her performance was more engaging than I expected, and her voice is actually very good live. The only thing that would have the night even better would have been a performance of "Oh My God". That would have topped it all off for me; but we already had more songs than any other city, so I should not complain. All in all, fun and entertaining intimate show. I didn't get pictures; my camera is defunct & photography was prohibited, as it turns out. However, my friend managed to get some scrupulous shots, anyway. If he posts them online, I'll post some here. (We were pretty close to the stage - about 3 rows in, I think). I was pretty wasted by the time we left the venue. We had had to endure a 3 hour wait, and during that period I figured "hell, I may as well lay waste to my body" and people kept buying me drinks, so... My head was swimming from several beers & a hit of something else, so I nearly took a nosedive down the flight of metal stairs as we were leaving (luckily, I was saved by my friend who was equally trashed & found the whole thing HILARIOUS). Probably shouldn't have worn those dominatrix stiletto boots, ha! For about 20 minutes, I felt like a boat lost on radar - I seriously lost any sense of navigation. Luckily, that cleared away after a bit. But more panic ensued as I discovered I had lost my favorite houndstooth scarf some time in the last 10 minutes of the show. I spent about 30 minutes searching Lost & Found and Coat Check, but no luck. It's gone, and I'm pretty sad about it, actually. R.I.P. My Favorite Scarf (2001 - 2007). :'( We went to a Japanese place (Italian Tomato - yes, ironic, eh?) on St. Marks Place & then caught the last train home. Good times. Fast times. 'Twas an exciting night.

NMELily Allen fights Jet and The Streets She has a few words for Corinne Bailey Rae tooLily Allen has become embroiled in yet another indie spat, this time lashing out at Aussie rockers Jet and The Streets. Writing on her blog, the outspoken singer revealed how she got into a drunken row with both bands during her recent appearances at the Big Day Out in Australia. She wrote: "I wound Chris (Cester) the ( Jet) drummer up the wrong way and he flicked a cigarette at me, I then threw a bottle at him which luckily missed and all hell broke loose, I have no recollection of the whole event. "I also had a big row with Mike Skinner from The Streets. I was so drunk I can't even remember what it was about." According to Allen it was down to her new found friends Kasabian that she managed to get out of trouble. She added: "The Kasabian boys were dragging me off him, saying: 'Stop it, Lily! You're being an idiot'. They're such a good influence on me." The singer also admitted that she thinks she has no chance of winning at this year's Brit Awards, despite getting four nominations. She also had a few words for fellow nominee Corinne Bailey Rae. Allen told the Daily Mirror: " Corinne Bailey Rae? I think she's a bit boring, sorry. She's a lovely girl but I don't think her music stands out and I'd be a bit annoyed if she won Best Female. I'd be really happy if Amy Winehouse wins, though. She's brilliant. "When I heard about the nominations I felt like it was a bit of a burden. I hate being in competitions 'cos I never win. I'll go home with nothing. I just know I will." ==============================//============================= 1. What's not to love about a good-looking, stylish girl with a potty mouth and the attitude to match? 2. Anyone from Kasabian telling another person that he/she is being an idiot must be the joke of the year! LOL 3. Kasabian sure have been a good influence on her, what with her rants and stuff!
