Satellite Party is a musical project and cultural movement conceived by former Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros frontman Perry Farrell following the demise of his former band in 2004. Lead guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, drummer Kevin Figuerido, new comer Carl Restivo on bass, and Etty Lau Farrell completes the line-up as backing singer for the band. The band's debut album entitled Ultra Payloaded is due to be released on 29th May 2007, with contributions from artists such as John Frusciante and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas, former Chili Pepper and Pearl Jam drummer Jack Irons, electronic dance producers Hybrid and Joy Division/New Order bassist Peter Hook. The group has signed with Columbia Records, which is a part of Sony Records, on June 6, 2006. It has been confirmed that the album will include a "lost song" titled "Woman in the Window" with vocals by the late Doors frontman Jim Morrison. The album shall be preceded by a single; "Wish Upon a Dog Star." The group made its debut appearance in Los Angeles at the Key Club on July 18, 2005. Tony Kanal of No Doubt filled in on bass and Steve Ferlazzo of DramaGods was on keyboards. This was followed by an additional performance at Lollapalooza 2005, held in Grant Park in downtown Chicago on July 24, 2005.[3][4] [1] In the February 8, 2007 issue of Rolling Stone magazine, there is mention of a sneak peek listening of the album, claiming "It's definitely far out, but it's Farrell's strongest body of work since Ritual, and this summer, he'll become a Solutionist himself." Billboard review:
Ultra Payloaded PERRY FARRELL'S SATELLITE PARTY Producer(s): Perry Farrell, Nuno Bettencourt, Steve Lillywhite Genre: ROCK Label: Columbia
There's something very likable about "Ultra Payloaded," maybe nothing more so than the fact that it's not trying to be cool. In some sense, frontman Perry Farrell dispensed with any perceived notions of "cool" when he formed the band with former Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, who adds tempered crunch, pretty atmospherics and slinky melodies here (Farrell's wife Etty is also in the group, on backing vocals). With help from such guests/co-writers as Flea, New Order's Peter Hook and Fergie, Farrell and company have made an album without inhibitions or self-consciousness. Heavily programmed by Farrell, the songs live up to the band's name: somewhat spacey and totally free-spirited. "Ultra Payloaded" is a party record that veers from the light, airy and catchy to the absolutely crankable. In the end, it's all interesting.βWes Orshoski
