Second Coming: DJ Secondcity on helping Toni Braxton achieve chart success WHO could’ve predicted that a bedroom DJ would help get R&B princess Toni Braxton back in the charts again. By James Cabooter/Published 31st May 2014 That’s what Secondcity AKA London lad Rowan has inadvertently achieved with his monumental house anthem I Wanna Feel. Currently tickling the top of the midweek charts Secondcity told me: “I was playing around with old acapella CDs and found one of Toni Braxton. “The track is You’re Making Me High, but I heard her saying I Wanna Feel and looped it around. It created a great riff, and she’s got such a nice voice I didn’t have to do anything to it.” It’s a coup not just for Rowan but for the R&B star who despite a slew of 90s hits went bankrupt a few years back. Rowan revealed: “She will be chuffed I hope, her management have been in touch, I think they’re into the tune and they say they really like it which is great to hear.” If 2014 has taught us anything, it’s that house music is back in a big way. But first on the scene was Secondcity whose single came before Kiesza and Clean Bandit. The DJ explained: “I made it eight months ago s o its been around a while but it happened organically, building up on the underground and becoming a club hit first. “It’s important to me that I stay true to my roots.” Speaking of roots his best mate is only Route 94, whose own anthem landed at No1 earlier this year. “We have best mates for quite a while and we share the same first name which is quite Awkward,” laughed Rowan. “I speak very highly or him. I work very closely with him and will always work with him. From a studio point of view we get each other, we are on the same wavelength.” I Wanna Feel is going to be everywhere this summer and hopefully the success can take him home to his real second city. “I grew up in Chicago but I haven’t been back for along time but yeah it is my second home. I owe my love of music to my mum as she was listening to Chicago house from when I was 3-years-old.” And he hopes the track’s success pays tribute to one of his heroes who died earlier this year. “When Frankie Knuckles passed away we were all saddened,” said Rowan. “He is massive inspiration everyone on house scene, you grow up listening to his music that was around 20 years ago and its blatantly informing what’s in today’s charts still.” Yep this banger is for you Frankie.

"Please" is one of my favorite Toni songs. I think it deserved a much higher peak on the chart's than it did. I wish she would record some more upbeat tracks for her cd's. I swear, PLEASE, TRIPPING and TAKE THIS RING are the holy Trinity singles-wise Had them been released during 'THE HEAT' era, I swear she would be on some crazy mega star level. Those 3 cuts with a proper label backing up were dead certain TOP10 hits on BILLBOARD I'm pleased she still perform 2 of those cuts on her current tours

The one thing that always bothered me about Please is that I feel like it should have been called Breathe. I guess she didn't want something similar to Breathe Again but it's always annoyed me.

I do remember hearing that the original title of the song was something like "Breathe (Back Up Off Of Me)" or "Back Up Off Of Me (Breathe)" but I forget where I heard it.

Saw this on WeLoveToni.com, and was wondering if anyone had heard if the label was considering releasing solo singles alongside their duet ones?

I Wish and The D Word are the only songs I truly cared for. Sweat and Heart Attack are tolerable but need more work.
This was a great idea that was poorly executed. SMH I'm completely over Babyface as a songwriter.
Toni was better off solo, she usually has 5 gems per album even if as a WHOLE the album is a stinker. I enjoyed Pulse but then again, I added most of the leaks to my version. Hopefully she finds a home on VERVE where David Foster can assist in rebuilding and rebranding Toni's legacy.

So I went to the San Diego Fair yesterday, and a quick thought about the concert (I may write a full in-depth review in the future): Babyface KILLED his set, Toni Braxton started out very strong, but towards the end it got a bit uneven (voice, song lengths, too much time getting audience members ONTO the stage), and leaving "Un-Break My Heart" as an encore after 10+ mins (when a LOT of the audience had left, disappointed she didn't sing it RIGHT after "Hurt You"), were all what led to it being a somewhat so-so concert experience. Not to mention that when Toni did sing "Un-Break My Heart," it was near impossible to hear her singing during the verses, in addition to her letting the crowd sing the chorus each time. She did deliver on the big note that everyone expects from her for this song, and I may think that it was a combination of bad mic + her saving her energy for that note, that led to that number being the most disappointing thing of the night. Like this person on Twitter said: Overall, I did enjoy it for the most part, and while I miss the days when she'd really deliver a top notch show (during the first two times I've seen her), I can understand that it does take a toll her health each time now. Plus, in addition to the Toni starting out strong comment, that's because I was shocked that she sang the first three numbers (He Wasn't Man Enough, You're Makin' Me High, Seven Whole Days) FULL LENGTH, with a FULL voice, and lots of dancing. Then, once she did the 1 verse then skip to the bridge on "You Mean the World to Me," I kinda expected she'd do the same for the rest of the set (like she's been doing the 1-2 most recent times I've seen her - yep, this made it 5 times for me). I was really happy I finally got to see Trina Braxton perform her song "Party or Go Home" live, since I've seen all the on-goings on "Braxton Family Values" about her being able to perform it (practice, confidence-wise, audience reception). SETLIST: BABYFACEFor the Cool in You Everytime I Close My Eyes Never Keeping Secrets Soon as I Get Home Slow Jam / Rock Steady Medley: Two Occasions / Don't Be Cruel / Every Little Step / Rock Witchu / Tenderoni / Can We Talk / I'll Give You Everything / My My My / I'll Make Love To You / End of the Road Whip Appeal TONI BRAXTONHe Wasn't Man Enough You're Makin' Me High I Heart You (Acapella) Seven Whole Days You Mean the World to Me Another Sad Love Song Happy Birthday / Happy Anniversary Love Shoulda Brought You Home / Just Be a Man About It Breathe Again Party or Go Home (TRINA BRAXTON) Between the Sheets / Big Poppa Hurt You (with Babyface) Un-Break My Heart (ENCORE)

Makes NPR's 25 Favorite Albums of 2014 (So Far) LIST: TONI BRAXTON & BABYFACE LOVE, MARRIAGE & DIVORCEToni Braxton & Babyface, Love Marriage & Divorce Rich doesn't come close to describing Toni Braxton's voice. More than 20 years after her first duet with Babyface, with the mic capturing every little thing that comes out of her mouth — every catch, every low-key run, even the bitten off end of a word — she sounds at once impossible and exactly like your friend did the last time her heart got broken. There are overblown moments on Love, Marriage & Divorce, but most of the album feels personal, and all that reverb helps to make it feel interior, even private. Babyface's voice is tangy and refined. On "Roller Coaster" he's punchy, using his voice like a rhythm instrument. Braxton takes liberties with the beat. Her two solo turns, "I Wish," which is too real, and "I'd Rather Be Broke" aren't occasions to show off; they further the narrative. The album sticks to its story, and in the process delivers a set of mature songs masterfully detailed. — Frannie Kelley

Love seeing this on the NPR list and love her description of Toni Braxton's voice. I was hoping to see this on what Billboard released for the top selling albums year to date. I wonder how far outside of the top 20 it is.

Maybe late on this, but just learned 'Another Sad Love Song' was originally for TLC w/Chilli in mind to sing it. Baby, I love my gorlz, but I couldn't fathom their vocals were potentially going to be on this masterpiece. Glad Toni ended up making it her song.

Toni and Tamar Clash In Extended 'Braxton Family Values' TrailerNjai | Wed, Jul 30, 2014 I've been there before. You're a new artist. Toni Braxton and her younger sister, Tamar, are clashing divas on the forthcoming season of "Braxton Family Values." In an extended trailer released by WE, the sisters come together to record a Gospel effort only to clash over the sound and direction. "I think that's corny. It's too dated," Toni Braxton says of a song in the clip below. "I'm an old b*tch. I've been doing this a long time. You're a new artist. I don't wanna be there. I've done that!" "Braxton Family Values" premieres Thursday, August 14 on WE.

Toni Braxton birthday special: Listen to the R&B icon's greatest hits jukeboxAmerican singer-songwriter Toni Braxton was born on October 7, 1967. Toni Braxton was the R&B icon of the 1990s and the best record selling female artist. She is often referred to as Queen of R&B for her contribution to music as a musician and record producer. Throughout her career she has sold over 60 million records, which includes 40 million albums worldwide. Her worldwide hits include Another Sad Love Song and Breathe Again from her self-titled album which sold over 10 million copies. Her love ballads Unbreak My Heart, He Wasn’t Man Enough and Spanish Guitar are the most famous ones and are still loved by listeners. Toni Braxton has six Grammy Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards and seven American Music Awards to her credits and few other accolades. But the singer had to face a difficult time even after selling 66 million records by mid of her career, that she had to give up the rights of many awards and accolades, to get over bankruptcy. No one can match Braxton’s husky and sultry voice and revamp her love ballads. Even though, she started her career with traditional R&B and contemporary ballads, later her songs paved way for an amalgamation of also hip-hop and dance music. On her birthday we share with you some of the best 20 songs of Toni Braxton. Listen to the jukebox below.
