Music Review: Keith CD returns to basics By MICHAEL McCALL, For The Associated Press Mon Jun 11 Toby Keith, "Big Dog Daddy" (Show Dog)
This time, it's meat and potatoes for Toby Keith — with the fat trimmed, and nothing unexpected filling out his plate. After experimenting with horns, R&B rhythms and other new sounds on his previous album, the big-shouldered Oklahoman gets back to basics on his new "Big Dog Daddy."
Country rockers like "Pump Jack" and the current hit "High Maintenance Woman" flex their manliness and wink with double entendres over chunky, catchy guitar riffs. The ballads balance roughneck political philosophy ("Love Me If You Can") with lyrics that glorify good women ("I Know She Hung the Moon") and take it like a man when it comes to one-nighters ("Wouldn't Wanna be Ya") and the end of long relationships ("Walk It Off").
With "Big Dog Daddy," the country star also continues his move toward complete control of his music and career. The second album released on his own record label, it's also the first in which he produced the bulk of it himself. He enlists co-production help from guitarist Tom Bukovac on two of the hardest-rocking cuts, "Hit It" and the title cut, but otherwise goes it alone.
Keith rose to the challenge, as this is his most consistently strong album since 2002's "Unleashed." As he branches into acting in films, running his own restaurant chain and managing his own record label, Keith proves once again that he works best when given the most freedom.
CHECK THIS OUT: Keith rarely records outside material, but he perfectly captures the lost-forever feel of the small-town square in a fine cover of Fred Eaglesmith's "White Rose."

Dec 25, 7:35 AM EST Keith, Family Win Wrongful Death Suit
PURCELL, Okla. (AP) -- Toby Keith, his mother and his siblings have been awarded $2.8 million in damages in the 2001 collision that killed the country music star's father.
A jury returned the verdict against Elias Rodriguez and Pedro Rodriguez, operators of Rodriguez Transportes of Tulsa, and the Republic Western Insurance Co.
According to evidence presented at trial, a charter bus owned by the Rodriguezes was "in urgent need" of brake repairs before H.K. Covel was killed in the March 2001 accident on Interstate 35, said attorney Greg Dixon, who represented Keith's family. The Rodriguezes had been advised of the brake problem before Covel's truck crossed the center median and struck the bus, he said.
The family initially suspected Covel suffered a medical condition that caused the truck to veer out of control. It later learned another vehicle had bumped the truck and filed a wrongful death lawsuit to clear Covel's name, Dixon said.
The verdict was returned last week. "The jury found no fault on the part of Mr. Covel in the wreck that claimed his life," Dixon said.
The plaintiffs, wife Carolyn Covel, daughter Tonni Covel and sons Toby Keith Covel and Tracey Covel, alleged that H.K. Covel would not have died if the bus had been equipped with properly working air brakes.

Jun 17, 7:18 PM EDT Toby Keith fundraiser brings in $709,000
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- Toby Keith's annual fundraiser for families of children with cancer raised $709,000 this year.
The money goes to Ally's House, a charity started after original band member Scott Webb's 2-year-old daughter, Allison, died of kidney cancer in 2003. The charity provides for families' needs, such as prescriptions, rent or mortgage payments, utilities and gasoline and hopes to eventually build a center near an Oklahoma City hospital to provide lodging.
Five years of private concerts, auctions and golf tournaments have raised more than $2.3 million.
About 750 celebrities and guests attended the private concert, party and auction earlier this month. Two dinners with Keith sold for $35,000 apiece, and a chance to ride on the boat named Northwestern from Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch" fetched $27,500.
The opportunity to be in one of the 46-year-old singer-songwriter's music videos brought in a donation of $25,000.

Aug 19, 4:51 PM EDT Toby Keith praises Obama
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Barack Obama is getting praise from Nashville, courtesy of one big, patriotic country star.
Toby Keith, perhaps best known to non-country audiences for his post-Sept. 11 song "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue," says he's a Democrat, and was impressed by the senator from Illinois.
Keith has said in the past that the 2002 song - which included lines aimed at the Taliban like "we lit up your world like the Fourth of July" - was more patriotic than pro-war.
Asked while promoting his new movie "Beer For My Horses" about the role of patriotism in the current presidential election, Keith replied: "There's a big part of America that really believes that there is a war on terrorism, and that we need to finish up.
"So I thought it was beautiful the other day when Obama went to Afghanistan and got educated about Afghanistan and Iraq. He came back and said some really nice things.
"So as far as leadership and patriotism goes, I think it's really important that those things have to take place. And I think he's the best Democratic candidate we've had since Bill Clinton. And that's coming from a Democrat."
