Interscope's Cheerytree Snags The PipettesU.K. buzz act and modern girl group the Pipettes have linked with Interscope Records imprint Cheerytree in the United States. The act released its debut, "We Are the Pipettes," in July of last year on London-based indie Memphis Industries. Cheerytree, which is also home to Canadian singer/songwriter Feist, is planning to re-release "We Are the Pipettes" this summer, according to label sources. It is not yet known if the U.S. edition will contain extra tracks not available on the U.K. version. The Pipettes will play their first major North American shows in March. The act has a sold-out date March 13 at the Bowery Ballroom in New York, and then will play multiple showcases at the South by Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas, which runs March 14-18. The Pipettes are also expected to announce a Los Angeles date. Previously, "We Are the Pipettes" had been available in limited quantities in the U.S. via San Francisco-based distributor Revolver. The Pipettes are not the first act Memphis has licensed to a major label for a greater marketing push in America. The label is also home to peppy pop act The Go! Team, who aligned with Columbia for the U.S. release of "Thunder Lightning, Strike" in 2005. Memphis co-cofounder Ollie Jacob says it was The Go! Team who first turned him onto the Pipettes. "That was back in 2004, and they told me I should check them out," Jacob says. "We went along to a show, and said, 'That'll do.' We fully expected majors to come in, but one way or another they didn't come in." www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003551000

When I went to the record store a month or two ago, I previewed their album and it didn't impress me so much. Perhaps I should give them another chance.

I like the Pipettes, and hope they manage to have some success in the states. I'll have to pass on the album, though, 'cause I got the songs a long, long time ago.

Oh God - not to stir trouble, but here is an example of TRUE POP (in the melodic sense). And hence, it will fail ON "POP RADIO" IN THE UNITED STATES.
Yes, I just equivocated. But you understand it was to prove a point.

Just checked out the album... they seem like a less fun version of Les Vedettes... but maybe it's a grower. I did like that "Judy" song a lot though

The Long Blondes are a much edgier version of this group. But I love the whole retro girl-group vibe here, even if it does rip off the twee punkpop of 90's Britpop heroes Helen Love. The Pipettes received a huge amount of online buzz about a year ago; it's interesting to see it (possibly) materialize into something beyond that. They didn't do much commercially in the UK, though. Pipettes Prep EP, Tour; Debut Gets U.S. Release DatePraise is not wasted on the Pipettes. After much Fork fawning over We Are the Pipettes last year, the pattern conscious trio have announced a U.S. release date for their debut LP at last. It arrives August 28, via new Stateside home Interscope/CherryTree-- and they're practically hand-delivering it with a North American tour. The tour will happen two months prior to the album's American release, but if slightly less than perfect timing means we get the Pipettes earlier than expected, then it's time we threw out our polka-dotted day-planners for good! Plus, the tour is timed extremely well with the June 5 release of the Your Kisses Are Wasted on Me EP on Interscope/CherryTree. In addition to the title track and "I Love You" from We Are the Pipettes, the EP also features non-album tracks "Really That Bad" and "Guess Who Ran Off With the Milkman?" Adorable. After serenading Europe, Riot Becki, Gwenno, and Rosay kick off their North American jaunt June 1 in Toronto. Your Kisses Are Wasted on Me EP: 01 Your Kisses Are Wasted on Me 02 I Love You 03 Really That Bad 04 Guess Who Ran Off With the Milkman? No regrets: 04-25 Hamburg, Germany - Grunspan 04-26 Berlin, Germany - Maria/Zitty Party 04-27 Munich, Germany - Backstage Werk 04-28 Florence, Italy - Viper 04-29 Placentia, Italy - Fillmore 04-30 Bologna, Italy - Estragon 05-01 Conegliano, Italy - Zion Rock Club 05-03 Paris, France - Trabendo 06-01 Toronto, Ontario - Lee's Palace 06-02 Washington, DC - Black Cat 06-03 Philadelphia, PA - First Unitarian Church 06-04 Boston, MA - Great Scott 06-05 New York, NY - Highline Ballroom 06-07 Chicago, IL - Empty Bottle 06-08 Minneapolis, MN - 7th St Entry 06-10 San Diego, CA - Casbah 06-11 Los Angeles, CA - Troubadour 06-12 San Francisco, CA - Popscene @ Rickshaw Stop 06-14 Seattle, WA - Chop Suey 06-15 Vancouver, British Columbia - Plaza Club

I don't seeing this group making any huge strides in the US. Their sound is very authentic in the retro department, but I don't see the "modern touch" that some reviews are pointing out will help them break America.

This group never broke through in the UK for many reasons, most notably the fact they're on a tiny label and have done like zilch promo [essentially making them an "indie" band..]
I wouldn't expect The Pipettes to make a commercial breakthrough anyway tbh, they have a style that wouldn't fit anywhere bar the blog world. Pop radio wouldn't go near anything by them sadly..
That said the album is wonderful. I've seen them live like 6 or 7 times, they're lovely people and a joy to see live <3

Apparently every time I buy a concert ticket, I doom the show.
Thanks to visa paperwork complications, the first leg of their North American tour has been delayed. :'(
At least the album still drops Tuesday...

God, this album is ancient. I just downloaded the new songs, which are okay. I do want to see them live, but on a proper tour at respectable venues.

I was dissapointed that the Pipettes scheduled their show the same day as Bat For Lashes here. Hopefully the rescheduled show will not have any conflices.

Due to their moving tour dates around, the show they were going to play in October in Boston at the Paradise Rock Club (one of my favorite places to see bands) is now going to be held at Great Scott in November. Great Scott is kinda dinky. I haven't been yet but that's what I have been told. I might still check it out tho. PULL SHAPES! What a great CD!

Sales total from 10/20 chart: 2,262 Yikes. I've yet to hear anything about rescheduling the concert here. I guess I'll refund my ticket (Kaiser Chiefs redux >:() and just re-purchase should they choose to do so. There's another upcoming acts contest in which they could use some votes, this time from Yahoo! Music.

Ugh, even the album cover is a dreary, tacky mess. I'm not liking the direction they're taking this time around. At all.

I just listened through it. I only liked one song (Finding My Way.)
Their previous CD had some cute, fun songs on it. But this new one is just kind of weird and doesn't really work imo.
