Keep in mind, too, that radio wasn't fragmented then like it is now, so AC didn't really have a lot coming at them to fight for audience share. Hot AC didn't really take off until the 90s and variety hits is a relatively new phenomenon.

Maybe what I'm about to say won't add much to this discussion. But it's a bit like shocker said: things evolve over time. I'm sure that, back in the 60's, when the AC format was called Easy Listening, even songs like Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" or The Mama & The Papas' "Monday, Monday" would generally be thought of as too beat-oriented to be heard on the format. By the 80's, those were probably AC gold staples. See what I mean here? So the fact that some so-called AC stations are now playing Creed* or Nickelback songs that they wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole ten years ago shouldn't even surprise anyone that much, seeing how AC has been adopting more guitar-oriented stuff as of late, as the chart itself indicates. It's just a sign of the times, basically. Or, to put it more bluntly, it's just AC radio making use of its survival kit. ;)
* Although according to the All Music Guide's Billboard chart stats, "With Arms Wide Open" hit #29 on AC.

^Yeah maybe (as all formats evolve), AC has finally evolved (in many markets) out of its lite-rock only phase, which was so popular in the 80s and 90s...I really think that the lite-rock thing may have finally run its course (and may return 5 years from now in a lot of markets...who knows) -
