So recently I have realized that more and more "buzz" singles are being released, thanks to the increasing popularity of the internet and online types of media. Most recently it's been a trend with pop acts such as Ashanti, Lindsay Lohan, Kat Deluna, Ashlee Simpson, Hilary Duff, Lil Mama, etc.
A "buzz" single (for those who don't know) is basically a single that has limited promo and is just released (sometimes with a music video; sometimes not) to digital outlets and has the sole purpose of creating, well, buzz for an upcoming album. They generally don't serve as the album's lead single, meaning they are not released to radio, etc. and are released quite a while before the album/first single.
For some reason, I find these annoying. I mean, it's good to hear a new single from an artist who hasn't released in a while and I can kind of understand why labels release them, but then you have a bunch of nonfans running around calling the singles "FLOPS" and don't even get a proper release for them, which can be frustrating..often times I find that it puts the future of the album/project in jeopardy as well for some reason.
What are your thoughts? :)

Aren't most "buzz singles" first singles that flopped and then got named that to keep momentum and save embarrassment? I think Nicole Scherzinger had about five. Seriously though, I don't see the point, a good first single will create all the buzz needed.

Well most buzz singles are potential first singles that leaked before they were official first singles and therefore warrant the title buzz single. Sometimes the first single just flops and people label it a buzz single. Usually buzz singles leak before the record company is ready to release the song to radio.
