From cmt.com: Dierks Bentley Has Cracker Jack Idea for Radio PromotionDierks Bentley is shipping more than 2,000 boxes of Cracker Jack snack food to country radio stations next week as part of a contest to promote his latest single, "Feel That Fire." The song's lyrics include a line about a "toy in the Cracker Jack." When radio programmers open the boxes to find the toy, 51 random stations will become winners from scratch-off tickets awarding prizes including autographed guitars and the grand prize of a backyard concert featuring Bentley. "Feel That Fire" is the title track of Bentley's fourth Capitol Nashville studio album and will be released Feb. 3. ------------------ I wonder if this means "Feel That Fire" will get a push to #1 next week. Brad/Keith shouldn't be a factor next week after they get a second week at #1 this week, and the only other contenders in front of Dierks are Billy and Alan. If the rest of this week's numbers keep going the way they've gone for the first three days this week, Dierks could trail Billy/Alan by less than a million going into next week.

Dierks' new album is now available for streaming at his myspace. My favorite songs on this CD are "Feel That Fire" and "Sideways" but I think the obvious follow-up single is probably "You Hold Me Together". That sounds like a big hit to me.

Dierks' new album is now available for streaming at his myspace. Thanks for the link. Dierks is one of those artists who has always interested me because of his background and potential. But I'm pretty disappointed by this album. My first impression is that this is a loud album that showcases some solid guitar work much more than Dierks' vocal, and that it is, for the most part, not a particularly distinctive Dierks record. I get that Dierks wants the album to rock, but I think there is a real mismatch between the aggressive guitar work and his lifeless vocal delivery. I kept thinking during songs like "Life on the Run" and "Sideways" that Keith Urban has the interpretive skill to inject some credible feeling into these lyrics. Instead, I get no sense of danger from Dierks' vocal on "Life on the Run," no urge to party from "Sideways" (the retread-heavy lyrics of "Sideways" don't help), no sense of reckless abandon from "Here She Comes." I suspect, given Dierks' reputation as a live performer, that these songs will be a lot more compelling in concert. The lyrics of "I Wanna Make You Close Your Eyes" are quite sensual (well, in the verses, anyway; the chorus is nothing new lyrically and the rhymes predictable), but there's barely a whiff of that in Dierks' delivery. There just isn't much variety (in volume and in phrasing) in the way he sings, and that gets dull. The shortcomings of Dierks' vocals are best illustrated by the welcome life and personality that his collaborators inject. Patty Griffin sounds absolutely gorgeous on "Beautiful World" -- she makes me buy into the lyrics with her richly expressive voice and interpretation. And in addition to contributing his own spirited vocal, Ronnie McCoury actually draws a sense of fun out of Dierks on "Last Call." Those two tracks are the album standouts for me, and I'll probably buy both (certainly "Beautiful World"). I do think Dierks' vocal fits the Kenny Chesney/islands-sounding "I Can't Forget Her" better, but the instrumentation sounds too polished and lacks the crackling live energy of the guitars on other songs on this record. The rapidfire delivery of "Little Heartwrecker" works for Dierks, though he sounds like he is really reaching for that interval jump in the "biiig black..." line in that verse. "Better Believer" has a very promising first verse asserting that people tend to remember their faith only in times of trouble; that when things are good, they get full of themselves and act like they can build their own heaven on earth. I thought that would be an interesting idea to explore, but unfortunately, the chorus is just a superficial treatment of what a "better believer" would do (be grateful to God). Based on "The Heaven I'm Headed To," from Long Trip Alone, I think Dierks is capable of a less clichéed and more thoughtful exploration of what faith means. I don't need to agree with him; I just wanted him to go deeper than he did in examining the ebbs and flows of a person's faith. The lyrics on this album come up short throughout, I think. "You Hold Me Together" is a series of images connected by words that rhyme with "together" that all make for an awkwardly irresolute way to end a line, at least when matched to this song's melody. The song doesn't at any point take off as a melody, either; it is utterly generic. I had high expectations for "Pray" based on Rodney Crowell's co-writing credit, but ended up finding the chorus really tiresome in its pounding insistence on the word "pray" and how each line seems to just trail off. The verses are surprisingly thin, too, with no detail to give us a sense of what was lost when the relationship didn't work out. And since I've railed more than once on Taylor Swift for cribbing other people's melodies for her songs, it's only fair that I point out the melodic similarity between the chorus of "Pray" and that of "Breathe" on Taylor's Fearless album (this is the song she co-wrote with Colbie Caillat). It is probably coincidental, seeing as Dierks' album is coming out only a few months after Taylor's did. Dierks may be an impressive live talent, but I'm beginning to wonder if he will ever impress as a studio artist. I'm not even sure what he should release as a single from this album...I don't hear anything other than "Beautiful World" and "Last Call" that would distinguish Dierks on the radio from Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, and other mid-level country stars (I think Aldean in particular has better hooks). If nothing else, I think this might pose a problem when it comes to generating album sales. Depending on your point of view, that is either ironic or fitting considering that Dierks' previous album was a move toward polished contemporary country and this album appears to be geared toward capturing the overlap between family-friendly rock and contemporary country.

The whole album is available for digital download for only $3.99 on Amazon. That's a great deal. Plus, his promotion seems to be amazing. All 3 banners atop the iTunes country page PLUS all 3 boxes under "new and noteworthy." His previous albums are also on sale for $7.99. ETA: And I just noticed the "windows" for "On Dierks Bentley's iPod" and "Dierks Bentley's Tourmates." Plus, the videos box features him too. Wow, I've never seen anything like this on iTunes country.

These reviews continue to drive me crazy.
Pressed-flesh paeans? OK, pressing the flesh is what politicians do when they work a room -- quick handshakes, overly sincere- looking eye contact, maybe memorizing some names but at least trying to make everyone feel connected. Dierks isn't interested in singing about this. There is nothing less erotic than pressing the flesh, unless perhaps a certain former President and Arkansas governor is the one working the room.
I mention this because I would enjoy reviews that were trying a little less hard, and were less full of themselves, than what we generally get. It's nice of you to post anything, leila, no criticism of you intended; I'm mostly asking whether anyone knows of a less over-the-top source of music reviews. I would happily forgo gratuitous references to John Updike. (Fluency in straightforward English a plus.)

Zazie: I'm sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy the review. Writers are constantly trying to find new twists on old grooves, and this practice is not without its problems. I usually leave the reviews to be judged by the reader, but I'm confident in saying that I have missed the mark occasionally in the past. I'm sure I'll stumble in the future as well. The term "pressed-flesh" is intended to recognize Dierks' dabbling in songs about hot, steamy sex, but I understand the concern about that phrasing. Feel free to stop by the site and share your thoughts about the music or the writing itself. Thanks!

I've listened to this album three or four times since it was put on myspace and I think the singles are "You Hold Me Together" followed by "Sideways" and then the album will close with "Beautiful World". He shouldn't have any struggle maintaining his hit streak.

I'd be really surprised if "I Wanna Make You Close Your Eyes" isn't a single. I'm guessing it will follow "Feel That Fire."

I was responding to your mistaken (in my view) usage more because it was about the tenth I've seen lately, not because you aren't ever supposed to make a mistake. Writers are indeed supposed to make mistakes; it's part of the territory. I'll gladly visit the site, since you're so welcoming.

I haven't listened to the entire album yet, but the songs I've heard so far have been interesting. From what I'm hearing it sounds like Dierks went into the studio with the intentions of presenting a more diverse set of songs that appease those people who felt his last album was too predictable and that too many songs sounded alike. The end result was an album that comes with different sounds and all, but Dierks doesn't seemed connected to the songs, and they don't seem to be the best fit for his voice. I couldn't help but think that Life On The Run would be better fit in Keith Urban's hands, and I would love to hear what Jason Aldean could do with Sideways. I still have a few more songs to listen to, but it seems like this is a crossroads album for Dierks. Hopefully his next album gets back to the sounds that got Dierks recognized in the first place.

I plan on picking up the album tonight, but I've only heard the current single and Pray so far. I am bummed to hear all these somewhat "bad" reviews since Dierks appeared to have worked so hard on this album. He mentioned taking 2 full years to do this album and seems so excited and proud of it in all the interviews I've read and what I've seen on his website. He even was hoping for a CMA nod :(

I didn't love this song on a lot in the beginning but it has grown on me. I'm enjoying his album from what I've heard of it.

Slant - 2/5 stars
So, another review saying he repeats himself on this, but that also points out "Beautiful World," "Pray," and "Last Call" as highlights.

So far, I've heard the first 8 songs on the album and I REALLY like 7 of them. "I Wanna Make You Close Your Eyes" is the only one so far I don't like. I knew I wouldn't by the title of the song. But then the production is boring and the lyrics typical.
But so far, I am confused at all the bad reviews for this album. I think it's his strongest album yet and I haven't even heard the whole thing yet.

Not sure why there are such negative reviews for this album, I think it's fantastic.
Feel that Fire #1 this week...I think Dierks should release I Can't Forget Her as his next single, and cut off the last 30 seconds for a radio edit.

But so far, I am confused at all the bad reviews for this album. I think it's his strongest album yet I agree 100%. I think this is an album with several radio-ready choices. Dierks doesn't stray too far from his previous recordings, yet the whole album is just different enough that it stands out from the others. All in all, I'm really enjoying this one.

I still don't care for the album, but to give credit where credit is due, I'm impressed by Dierks' opening week numbers on this album. After Blake Shelton's first-week numbers were off by nearly 50% from those of his previous album, I thought there was a real chance that Dierks would struggle to hit 50K first week (because I don't think "Feel That Fire" is all that standout a track). But 71K in first week sales is only about 13% off from the 82K he sold first week for Long Trip Alone. I think that's an especially impressive hold considering how much album sales have dropped since LTA's release. Among other things, it's a testament to the core fanbase Dierks has built up through touring and his hard work to promote the album.

I don't know how I feel about the album yet. I've listened to it through about 1 and a half times so far. I like some of the songs more than others, but I can see how it would be disappointing to some. I guess the best way I can describe it is the songs don't really have that staying power feel to them. They are just kind of there. As much as I like Dierks as a person, his CDs don't ever excite me as much as some other artists do. That said, I really like Better Believer and Can't Forget Her (really like the Spanish feel to that one and the way he sings it).

I also think that Better Believer is one of the standout tracks, along with Sideways (which is really infectious), and You Hold Me Together.
