First single from Dierks' upcoming album to be released in February. Goes for adds September 29th. Dierks co-wrote the song with the Warren Brothers and Brett Beavers.
I think this is a little bit of a different sound for Dierks, and I like it.

Really good, I like it too- definately a new style for Dierks. I did not like him when he first came out but his music has been gradually growing on me since about "Every Mile A Memory".

Wow, he's actually put out something that has nothing to do with being on the road. His stuff is really starting to blend together lately, all the same key, same tempo, same electric guitars, same road stuff. ("Free & Easy" being the only exception sonically, but it was still a road song.)

5 months between single and albums....his songs usually move up the charts a little faster. I am very surprised they are leaving so much time in between. Maybe they are accounting for the Christmas slump, but still...

I was beginning to think Dierks couldn't do anything else.

Well we are getting in the time of the year where you will have the CMA Awards, the Holidays, and just a slow-paced chart season all around. Not to mention the year chart will be ending before long so I'd say there are several factors that they looked at for this decision. It seems reasonable to me, especially since Christmas will cut about a month out of the charts, things will start moving slow on the charts soon.

It's no "Long Trip Alone", but this is a solid effort. However, does anyone else feel the resemblance to Jennifer Hanson's "Joyride", especially around the chorus?

Although, I kind of like this step in a new direction for Dierks. No doubt this will do very well for him.

I have never understood why Dierks or his label have choosen the direction that he is going in. When he first came out I thought he could have been the next "maverick" in country music. His beer drinking party songs were the best songs. His hair was all crazy and women were going crazy over him. I felt a Hank Jr. vibe from him. Then they completely ignored all the party songs, cut his hair and changed his style. I still like Dierks but he seemed a lot more fun as a "wild" guy.

Dierks definitely did not 'sell out'. that is a ridiculous comment. he sold out by getting over drinking songs and cutting his hair? please. its about the music, and his music is great. drinking songs were burned out years ago with the likes of Tim, Garth and Tracy Byrd.

If the "they" you're referring to includes Capitol, I disagree. Dierks recently got married and has a child on the way, so I'm sure that's a big part of the reason he's changed a little bit (although I honestly don't think his music has changed too much).

Yeah, I don't think his music has changed that much from the beginning. I think his guitar playing has gotten alot better, so his guitar heavy songs sound a little different, and that's about all I hear.

I *think* what lumpster meant by "sell out" is that Dierks hasn't changed his music much at all. He found and started with a winning formula, stayed with it, and now it's gotten boring and monotonous. Kind of like how Keith Urban's music used to be.
At least, that's how I interpret "sell out" in this context. And lumpster, I COMPLETELY agree with you (if that's what you meant).

I think that most of Dierks' material has started to sound the same. "Come a Little Closer", "Settle for a Slowdown", "Every Mile a Memory", and "Trying to Stop Your Leaving" all sound very similar to me as far as the arrangement and melody; same verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-chorus structure for the most part, same electric guitar, same tempo. His first two albums showed more variety singles-wise; I thought all three singles from his debut were excellent.
At least "Long Trip Alone" threw in a few minor chords and a lyrical twist, while "Free and Easy" added a banjo, despite the fact that it a.) repeated the title about 400 times, and b.) was the 127th road song of his career.

Yup, I havent cared for any of Deirks singles in a few years now( well Free & Easy was ok). And really wasnt knocked out by anything on his last record at all. He just got in a rut and like Ten Pound said, everything just ran together. In style, lyric , and tempo. I havent listened to the new one all the way through yet, but at least it is stylistically different from his more recent work. I do wish he'd find a middle ground to stay radio viable.... but still occasionally do a Bed Of My Truck or My Last Name here and there though....

I agree with everything you said and that's pretty much why I haven't liked Dierks since the 2nd album came out. The first one was the only one I really liked. Also, there's something about "Free and Easy" I just don't like. I guess because 1: I don't like banjos and two 2: like you said he repeated the title 100 times.
