For me, the true pinnacle of the Madchester craze. And on hindsight, the Mondays were truly the only ones who could credibly lay claim to be influenced by house music, and therefore the only ones who truly embodied what Madchester was (supposedly) all about: marrying modern dance music with (more or less) classic British guitar-pop. Years down the road, Pills... definitely sounds like an artifact of that era. But therein lies one of its greatest qualities. Because here was a band who truly captured the moment, and marked a lot of those who listened at the time. And unfortunately (for me), not a lot of guitar bands in Britain since then took notes from the Mondays pages. Instead, parochialism, reverence and backwards-looking have been the law of the land, with a few exceptions here and there. But let's not cry over spilled milk. Shall we celebrate Pills's greatness to the end!
