Billboard.com:
Seal Sings From His 'Soul' On New Album
October 01, 2008 , 11:30 AM ET
by Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Exactly a year on the heels of his last album, Seal will unveil another new project Nov. 11 via Warner Bros. "Soul," as its name indicates, features the artist covering 11 vintage soul numbers with production from David Foster.
Among the material features is Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come," Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long" and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' "If You Don't Know Me by Now."
"Someone once said, 'The album will sound like the time you had making it.' Never before has it been as true as in the process of recording this record," says Seal.
The artist's 2007 dance-dominated album "System" has been his lowest seller to date, having moved just 155,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The lone date on Seal's schedule at present is an Oct. 14 appearance at the Africa Rising benefit at London's Royal Albert Hall, alongside Christina Aguilera.
Here is the song list for "Soul":
"A Change Is Gonna Come" (Sam Cooke) "I Can't Stand The Rain" (Ann Pebbles) "It's A Man's Man's Man's World" (James Brown) "Knock on Wood" (Eddie Floyd) "I've Been Loving You Too Long" (Otis Redding "Here I Am (Come And Take Me)" (Al Green) "If You Don't Know Me By Now" (Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes) "It's Alright" (the Impressions) "I'm Still in Love With You" (Al Green) "Free" (Deniece Williams) "People Get Ready" (the Impressions)

I wish he would've promoted System a little bit harder but I think this album will be great.

His cover of "A Change Is Gonna Come" is Godawful. Not only has that song already been covered ad nauseum, but he gave a dead and soulless performance of one of the most soulful and poignant R&B songs ever written.

ARTIST: SEAL
ALBUM: SOUL (WARNER BROS.)
Is there such a thing as being too smooth? Seal's David Foster-produced tribute to classic soul is a figure skater of a collection, all elegance and grace. But some of these songs require the more aggressive approach of a hockey player. "It's been too hard living/ But I'm afraid to die" (from Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come") doesn't have quite the same resonance when coated with the glaze of Seal's preternatural voice. That same quality tends to sap the energy of uptempo selections like "Knock on Wood." But on the love songs, the combination of Seal and the material offers something so new that comparisons to the original seem unnecessary. Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You for Too Long" gets smaller and sweeter, Harold Melvin's "If You Don't Know Me by Now" more mournful.

I'm really impressed at how consistently this has sold since it dropped. I guess the buying public prefers soulful Seal over dancing Seal.

When I came into the thread to see his sales figures to date, I thought for sure it would be less than 200k. He is not doing bad...It may reach Gold status.
