You know what's weird? Martina gets all sorts of flak from fans for releasing over 9000 issue songs and/or power ballads, and not once have I heard any music critic say the same thing. Usually when fans express negativity towards an artist, I can find at least one critic who agrees with them (e.g., Rascal Flatts playing it insanely safe by releasing only whiny power ballads and laughable attempts at "fun" songs), but not in Martina's case. Am I missing something amid all the gratuitous belting, mindlessly positive lyrics, and cavernous production that have all but ruined her in the 2000s?

Plenty of critics have said that Martina McBride is someone who release all of those songs.

Plenty of critics have said that Martina McBride is someone who release all of those songs. I haven't see it though. Every review I've seen of WUL or this album has been almost as mindlessly positive as her song selection. Can you find any that have criticized her for being so one-note?

I haven't see it though. Every review I've seen of WUL or this album has been almost as mindlessly positive as her song selection. Can you find any that have criticized her for being so one-note? Well, Mikael Wood of EW feels she "lays on the mid-'80s soft-rock cheese a bit thick" on the album. And Randy Lewis of the LA Times notes that Martina "has staked out a niche as a voice of female empowerment" but also feels that "in relying so heavily on a phalanx of Nashville songwriting pros -- these 11 songs are the product of 32 credited writers -- there's a music-by-committee quality that inevitably creeps in." Bobby Reed of the Chicago Sun-Times says:I want to make clear: there are positive reviews of this album out there...the AMG review by Thom Jurek is reasonably positive, Michael McCall's review of the album for the Associated Press is positive. I'm just responding to Ten Pound Hammer's question here.

Wow, hits daily double's final tally for "Shine" is 34,865. Even worse than projected :(

Wow, hits daily double's final tally for "Shine" is 34,865. Even worse than projected :( Turns out HDD accidentally identified its penultimate update as the final update for the week. It corrected that error, and the final version of this week's chart now estimates Shine at #10 all-genre with just under 41K in first-week sales. That would be enough for the #1 spot on the Country Albums chart, but HDD is estimating only about a 1.5K difference with the #2 album, so it will come down to what the official Soundscan tallies are. I think, but am not sure, that Shine will move up a spot on the all-genre Billboard top-200 albums chart from HDD because the Pearl Jam re-issue is considered a catalog album.

i think she would have done better to take the good songs off of Waking Up Laughing and the good ones off of Shine, to make one really good album and spare us from the mediocre filler. "Waking up Shining" ??? Agreed! I like "Shine" but I don't really see it staying in my memory like some of her earlier albums.

Thanks, dudleyvillas. Good to know that I"m not the only one that's so critical of Martina.

She's liable to stay stuck @ #11 for a few weeks at Country Aircheck/Mediabase; John Rich (his video for 'SDD' premieres tonight on 'Entertainment Tonight'), Montgomery Gentry & Keith Urban all figure to pass her by the end of next week.
Then there's Paisley and Bentley and Jackson and Chesney and.....

All indications show that "I Just Call You Mine" will be the next single, but I'd like to see something like "Wrong Baby.." or "Walk Away" next. As I previously mentioned, I think there's some highlight tracks here, but the filler here is awful.
As a note too, I feel bad for Martina.. those sales are quite anemic, but that's what a slumping music industry will do. She will learn that she has to really have great material to move full albums.. hopefully more artists will.. and the label will learn that, to catch Taylor, you have to harness iTunes. Sony Nashville should have adapted already to this, but frankly, I don't think they have.

I would have thought that I Just Call You Mine would be the next single since it was featured on the sticker on the album.

I'm not enamored of "Walk Away"'s lyrics, but I think it is the best of the power ballads on the album, so if that is what the label is looking for, I would prefer WA over "I Just Call You Mine," which I detest (for whatever reason, Zazie, I found the co-dependent vibe more off-putting than notion of flawed theological belief...I think it's that I don't mind disagreeing with the latter as long as it's not being imposed on me?). And I also really agree about Sony Nashville not having adapted to the increased importance of iTunes in the current market. I think Capitol Nashville (with Keith, Dierks and Lady A) has probably done the best job on that front.

John Rich is losing AI and he's behind her, so he shouldn't be a threat. She is also (slightly) out gaining MG at the moment, and has a nearly 3 million AI lead, so she should be safe there as well. I agree that Keith Urban may beat her to the top 10, since no spots will be open next week (unless Tim free-falls, which I doubt). As long as Martina keeps gaining, I think that she will take Darius Rucker or Taylor Swift's spot (whoever leaves first) - assuming that Tim McGraw is done, and Keith Urban replaces him.

I bought the album this past Tuesday, and I must say I wasn't as impressed on first listen but the album has grown on me SO much since then. I think far and away the standouts are "Lies", "Wild Rebel Rose", and "Walk Away". Such a HUGE step up from WUL. As for uptempos, I like all of them except "Sunny Side Up". I really hope "Lies" gets the chance to be a single at some point, it's outstanding IMO.

I think "I Just Call You Mine" will make a good single if it is actually released. Won't expect a high peak anyway. I don't really see any top5 -or even top10- hit on this album.

Yeah, starting to look like a great chance now, if she can hold on for two more weeks. With Timmy playing a new song tomorrow night at the ACMs, I would expect NTDF to plunge big-time on the 4/25 chart, at least 4 or 5 mill. The 4/18 chart might find him with around 24.5, Martina at 19, and Urban at 17 mill. So if she can keep within two mill of Urban's gain on the 4/25 chart, that top ten slot will be hers. If not, there will soon be Darius, Taylor, and George free-falling out, by the 5/2 chart, and if Brad and Kenny take two of those spots, there's still one left for her. Of course, with her entering her 23rd week on the chart, it's no given that she can keep gaining for three more weeks.

Yes, but it's my limitation I was talking about -- there's a certain kind of country-music "theology" that drives me wild and prevents me from paying any serious attention to songs that go in that direction. I do feel imposed on even when I shouldn't. Whereas a truly bad love song is... just a truly bad love song. I'm not a big co-dependency fan myself, as you probably knew already.
It's always luxurious to have multiple interpretations available upon which to dislike a song, and perhaps this one has three or four. I hope it doesn't find its way to radio.

I am hearing Ride more and more on the airwaves. I love it. I want her to keep going with this song and not get blocked. Jake Owen's song and the Arista duet are taking up space.

She managed to reach #10 at Mediabase this morning, but could conceivably slip back to #11 by the end of this week behind Keith Urban & Montgomery Gentry, with Taylor Swift set to go recurrent next weekend.

A few thoughts on "Shine" and Martina's career:
1) With a title like Shine, why is the CD cover predominately matte black? 2) I was surprised by the dearth of unknown songwriters on this album. At least to me, I don't recognize a lot of names. 3) I was driving around my alma mater's college campus the other day while Ride was playing. It took me back in time to when Journey was really popular (when I was in college)--I guess because I think the song sounds Journey-esque. 4) The last song of Martina's that I really, really liked is "Goodbye" from her 1999 Emotion CD. 5) I'm beginning to think her Timeless album was just an effort to tag up. Nothing from her studio albums since then really sound that country. 6) I have listened to Shine at least a dozen times, and none of the music struck a nerve with me. If Martina were a new artist, I would not include myself a fan. 7) Please, Martina, you've served the shiny, happy people base aplenty. Get back to the grit.

2) I was surprised by the dearth of unknown songwriters on this album. At least to me, I don't recognize a lot of names. Robert Ellis Orrall, The Warren Brothers, Nathan Chapman (Taylor Swift's producer), Liz Rose, Tia Sillers, Darrell Scott, Tom Shapiro, Neil Thrasher, Josh Kear, Hillary Lindsey, Troy Verges... I recognize plenty of the names here. It probably seems like a lot because almost every song has a different writer. 3) I was driving around my alma mater's college campus the other day while Ride was playing. It took me back in time to when Journey was really popular (when I was in college)--I guess because I think the song sounds Journey-esque. Thanks for making me feel too young for this forum. Again. 7) Please, Martina, you've served the shiny, happy people base aplenty. Get back to the grit. Agreed 110%.

the big Dallas station KSCS has reduced spins big time so I think chances of top 10 are out the window......... grrr....guess they don't want Martina to be in the top 10 either. What a shame!! She is currently the most played song on the big Chicago station.

That's the same CD I have and I don't consider it predominately black, although if it were, I wouldn't have an issue.
