Yeah-its just selling because it shares its' name with Mariah. Not because its one of his best received hits ever and heavily shown in commercials for a movie that will be very popular in the downloading crowds and also effectivly shown on MTV and One Tree Hill, both huge download grabbers. One Tree Hill is one of the lowest rated tv series out there right now. And the movie has barely recieved any press other than MySpace. Don't get me wrong...I love Gavin (those who know me will agree) and I love this song....but its extreme rise on iTunes seems suspicious.

Tell me you didn't actually just imply payola after all of last year's drama.

Payola on iTunes? Hmm... kinda impossible. Unless the record company has provided free downloads to GG fanclub members or something. I highly doubt it... I think the song has a lot going for it ... plus the fact that its in Top 5 on iTunes and the Apple website, people would be interested to check it out.

i've seen a lot of commercials on TV for the movie. and I think free download codes only for a specific song don't count towards billboard anymore (ever since the controversy over the Mariah song with the same title), if they even exist. If free downloads counted then the free downloads offered every week on iTunes would probably be #1 on the Hot 100.

LOL It's not suspicious at all...
Both "Jesus Walks" and "Lose Yourself" flew up the iTunes chart because of a heavily-aired commercial.
Same case with this, plus the fact that this is a new single for a new big movie.

Yeah, it seems like I've seen the movie's commercial during every show I've watched this week. And once it's made it into the Top 10 on iTunes that's obviously going to generate more attention for the song.

Lowest rated, but I believe other songs featured on One Tree Hill have seen noticeable bumps before-leading me to believe that the audience that DOES watch One Tree Hill are buyers. Once again...an extremely heavy commercial campaign connected with a movie that appeals to prime Itune buyers and being featured on multiple shows that also target Itunes buyers plus being his most well received hit to date=not suspicious in the least bit to me.

I don't see this doing anything at radio without a radio edit. There's 30 seconds of no vocals and just instrumentals in the first minute.

Well, "I Don't Wanna Be" is the theme song to OTH, and it went #1 on pop. So.

I'd agree with you on that. One of the main attractions of the show is the music. If it weren't, they wouldn't've even attempted the One Tree Hill tour last Spring.

Almost everytime I see the trailer for the movie, Evanescence's "Going Under" is playing. I rarely see the one where they play this song. I guess it's the opposite in the US.

I've only heard the "Going Under" version 5 times maybe, but I've heard the "We Belong Together" version about 20 times. This is being advertised during almost every commercial break on almost every network.

I've never seen one with Going Under. I thought ones with this song were the only ones airing.

Gavin has apparently said that he's not actually happy with this particular version of the song and that he will doing it the way he wants to for his sophomore album (I imagine it'll be the 8 minute version from concerts on the album).

I don't know the song's hourly movements, but it is currently #3 on iTunes.

Wasnt You and Me a huge, massive download hit before it was an airplay hit? Did everyone cry cheating or Mariah Carey then? (or something similar) What about other songs with very little airplay that have peaked high due to huge downloads?

Their title doesn't match any recent top song. Are there other songs that charted so high on iTunes that wasn't being played on radio? Good question...don't know the answer to that one. Also, I live in the L.A. Metropolitan area watch TV every night and see 1 movie every night as well (I love matinees). I have seen exactly one ad for the movie and it was the "Going Under" ad.

Well, I can assure you the Gavin ad is definately out there.
That said, I don't doubt having the same title as a Mariah song has helped this one out a bit. But, unless Middle America is even stupider than I thought, I highly doubt it hit #3 solely because of people thinking it's a Mariah cover.

I remember everyone being utterly STUNNED when it actually sold...but I dont remember anyone crying that it was cheating or some other "explanation"

I can't believe anyone is actually suggesting that people have bought this song because of Mariah. You'd have to be pretty dumb to buy this song simply because it has the same title as a Mariah hit, no offense if anyone here has done that.
Why would you buy a song not having listened to the preview clip or having heard it in the many movie commercials? The only way is if you know and like the artist and buy anything new they release. And then that becomes the reason for the purchase, not the song title.
IF any purchases were based on the title, it's a very very minimal number. It's just not logical.

This song still doesn't have a single spin, nor a hint of an add date. WTF

Great song. It really is weird that a song that is in the Top 3 on iTunes doesn't have a single radio spin.

This song still doesn't have a single spin, nor a hint of an add date. WTF yeah! radio is so damn fickle sometimes. this time last year Gavin had one of the biggest hits on radio, but now he can't even get one curiousity spin from somewhere, like "this is on all those commercials and it's got a shitload of downloads, what do you think". it makes me kind of scared for what's gonna happen when some of my other fav artists who are radio darlings now release a new CD.
