Maybe it's just me.
But a year ago, we were DOMINATED by rap music on the pop charts. That trend seems to be over
Looking at the current mediabase pop chart.. Here are the rap songs in the top 40
#7 Nelly - Grillz #13 Eminem - Shake That #19 Juelz Santana - There It Go #39 Eminem - When I'm Gone
I don't consider Sean Paul to be rap. I haven't heard all the songs in the top 40, so there maybe be some i missed.
BTW, I'm not complaining, i'm just pointing out a trend i noticed

R&B has been making a comeback ever since last year. The trend seems to be continuing this year.

I'm glad to see it slowly going away, overall I just think people are slowly getting tired of it because it is so repetitive after a while. It is nice to see R&B taking its place.
Overall I think the chart is finally looking pretty well-balanced as far as genres go (except Country), but there is still some quality issues to work out.

It is definitly too early to say Rap is fading out, or that what you have noted is more than a brief reprive. Still I definitley hope you're right in a long term sense.

Rob, I love rap too...but I was thinking what you wrote about 2 days ago I just didn't write it like you did...when Trina, Three 6 Mafia, Chamillionaire, and the last 2 50 cent singles either ran up fast and crashed or just crashed....seems like there is a shift in the balance...We have an amazing top 20 right now (save for the very boring One Wish) and am very happy with it's balance.

This makes it even all the more shocking that freaking "LAFFY TAFFY" became a hit on pop. It would be one thing when rap was all over the format, but now that pop radio is being more choosy with the genre it seems even wierder that that piece of shit was one of the few rap tracks to break through.

I would love for more balance on CHR these days. I do believe there is a way to put All American Rejects next to Nelly next to Aly & AJ without going overboard on one particular genre. Plus, for me, it isn't so much that rap songs are dominating the charts; it's the quality of the songs. I cringe when I hear songs like "Grillz" and "Laffy Taffy".

I'm extremely happy that r&b is making more entries on pop, just as I am happy to hear that this rap "reprieve" is happening as it is. As much as I don't enjoy hip-hop as much as I do the other genres, I'd hate to see the good ones to dwindle away; I'm sure that isn't happening for a while, either way.

It seems to my Kiss station plays older raps songs than they do new songs. Which is bad sign to begin with, esp. for rap songs.

I don't think it's quite fair to say yet that rap is officially dying at Pop.
The main reason there's been a light drought of rap tracks at Pop as of late is because we haven't been formally introduced to the next 50 Cent or Jay-Z yet. Plus, 50 Cent is on a current release off-season, Nelly's latest single is from a re-release, recent big names like The Game are off currently, etc.
Should Fiddy, The Game and Kanye West in particular come back with new material and it can't deliever, then we'll have every reason to suspect a new anti-rap trend has developed here.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton
