I remember flipping TV stations one day, seeing *NSync on BET, and thinking WTF??? This is the video they were playing.
"Gone" was pretty much their first straightforward R&B single (that I remember) and I thought it was a really excellent record. I was really surprised at how convincing they were on an R&B ballad: Good lyrics, good vibe, and great harmonies. Either this or "Girlfriend" is my favorite from them.
Actually, I thought all three singles from Celebrity -- "Pop," "Gone," and "Girlfriend" -- were on fire. They were also the only three singles I ever liked from the group.
"Gone" was their biggest R&B hit: #14 on Billboard's R&B/Hip Hop Singles chart and #12 on R&B/Hip-Hop airplay.

This is what killed them...But I thought 'Pop/Dirty Pop' WAS horrible and very poppy. It wasn't R&B at all...But I've never liked N'Sync and never will.

This song isn't by NSYNC. It's a solo song.
Anyways, this song is a total SMASH! I love it!

This song isn't by NSYNC. It's a solo song. I'm pretty sure it's by *NSync. Here's the video credited to the group.

I know its on their album and all of 'em are on the video but you can hardly hear them sing. It's all Justin.

I liked it, but now when I think about it, it's one of NSYNC's most boring singles.

I liked it at first, but it got boring real fast. My feelings exactly. I remember loving this song when I first heard it, but quickly got tired of it after about two or three listens (which, BTW, were all in the same day, so that might have had something to do with it). I found the falsetto chant of "GONE!!" to be quite irritating. Sounded kinda like he (the one singing the highest note) was being goosed.

I found it odd that the urbans were playing it. It's okay I guess.

This song was the beginning of JT's success on the Urban & R&B charts that continues to this day.

Their harmonies. :'(
(I do look at this song as the beginning of the end for 'NSync, and the untapped potential is still hard to deal with, but I still LOVE everything they put out. And I'm still bitter that it's over. ;))

Most people who like JT's solo work and r&b, love this. Those who preferred their "pop" music look as this single as the beginning of the end of their beloved group and hate this. Personally, it's one of my favorites from 2001 and the first single of theirs that got my attention.

Justin Timberlake Nearly Had Duet With Michael Jackson a Decade AgoThe King of Pop was dying to record the song "Gone" as a duet with Timberlake, but fate did not cooperate With the Michael Jackson rarities album "Xscape" coming out next week, the music world has had plenty of reasons to reminisce on the King of Pop. Justin Timberlake joins MJ posthumously on the new single "Love Never Felt So Good," but a new snippet from an episode of "Oprah's Master Class" tells the fascinating story of a real-life collaboration that almost was. In working on 'N Sync's third and final studio album, 2001's "Celebrity," Timberlake co-wrote a slow jam called "Gone." He wrote it in hopes of collaborating with Jackson, but initially thought MJ had passed on it. So Timberlake introduced it in an A&R meeting for "Celebrity" and it became an 'N Sync song. "It was the first song I cut by myself and then brought to the guys and included them," Timberlake says. "Gone" went on to be a hit single (it peaked at No. 11 in the Hot 100) and was nominated for a Grammy (Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals). However, what happened next left Timberlake wishing he'd waited a little longer to hear back from Jackson. MJ called him later and said he wanted to make "Gone" into a duet between them. Timberlake had to break the bad news -- the song was already cut as an *NSYNC record. "I'm on the phone literally punching myself in the face," he says. Timberlake proposed billing the track as a feature song (as *NSYNC featuring Michael Jackson or vice-versa) but the King of Pop insisted on a true duet between them. "I never told anybody that Michael story," says Timberlake, closing the story with a glimmer in his eye. www.billboard.com/articles/news/6084534/justin-timberlake-duet-michael-jackson-gone-oprah
