Not only is this the quintessential Diva song, but it was the first post-Supreme hit for Diana(one of her most soulful tunes to date). It not only topped the Billboard Single Chart, but scored a Grammy nomination. The steamy intro and gospel cresendo is pure music magic. A pop classic indeed! s17.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=334TNTI101EEI3FOWLONC1I1PI

Agreed. I prefer this to the Marvin Gaye/Tammy Terrell version, though both are good songs.

Word to Keith3000 on preferring the Marvin/Tammi version.
But Diana's is a classic in its own right. Great track. :)

I can't stand Diana's cover. I love the original by Marvin and Tammi though.

Word to Keith3000 on preferring the Marvin/Tammi version. Better go re-read his post. ;) The original is a classic... Diana's version is just too over-dramatic for me.

Love the original, this one's okay just because the song's so good, but overall doesn't hold a candle.

1. Marvin Gaye/Tammy Terrell 2. Diana Ross 3. Temptations That's my ranking. What about Michael McDonald's version? That's probably my favorite of the three I've heard (I had no idea that the Temptations did a cover of this)

This is just superb. Absolutely brilliant. She barely even sings on it for the first half, just talks, but it works so, so well. When she does sing, it's just orgasmic.
This song proves that what Diana lacks in vocal power, she more than makes up for in the sheer JOY she can put into a vocal. She's one of America's greatest and most underrated song stylists.

This is one of the best remakes in pop music history IMO.
I say that because it completely re-interprets (rather than rehashes) the original version. That's what I love about it: Nothing is the same other than the lyrics. (Oddly, Ashford & Simpson produced both versions, I think). I mean, I like the original version better, but I really think the remake is an awesome record, too.
You know: People always give Diana Ross crap because they say she doesn't belt all the time. But I actually think she interprets songs far better than many of the vocal powerhouses. A big voice means nothing if you don't have the style to go with it.
(I mean, she has quite a few records, even during her Supremes days, where you can really tell how powerful her voice was. But that's just never been her approach to records.)

A big voice means nothing if you don't have the style to go with it. I agree except for the part about interpretation. AFAIC it's the interpretation that's the problem here. I suppose it's a matter of taste, but for my part this version is an abomination of the original.

I liked Diana's version, but I have always preferred the Inner Life/Jocelyn Brown disco version. Jocelyn did justice to the song in a way that Diana could not.

Agreed. I prefer this to the Marvin Gaye/Tammy Terrell version, though both are good songs. Likewise, just love how layered the vocals are on this and the arrangement is stunning.

Obviously Marvin and Tammy's version is better, but I love this too. There's really not a lot to it, but like Elle said it's fantastically put together.

I like her version, but sometimes I prefer the original because it's more upbeat. Both are great though.

Do we remember when the ladies of Designing Women performed this? Oh, Suzanne Sugarbaker... so wrong, yet very her.

Love it. Great remake. I love the original, but Diana made this entirely in her own way!
This peaked at #1 on Pop and R&B and #6 on AC.
