I liked Sugar Ray and The Goo Goo Dolls doing well then.

1999 had a LOT of bubblegum in it, and out of the great music, it doesn't seem like there was much melodical diversity until at least 2003. Of course, it probably doesn't help that 1999 was when I entered high school AND first started really listening to pop music, and 2003 was when I graduated. Something else to think about is the perspective. Looking back at different years really seems different if you're trying to compare years where one year you didn't (or couldn't) follow music throughout the year, and in the other year you did. I dunno...I feel like it's easier to say there was a better mix of music in years where I wasn't listening to it all year long, as opposed to more recent years where it feels like there wasn't such a mix (the exception to this being 2005, IMO). And now I'm just rambling. I'll shut up now...

1999 was good for me, too, but I'm sure it's just because I was emotionally connected to a lot of music from that time. From a more objective standpoint, it was a fairly insignificant year musically.

I agree with you Bob that 1999 was a great year for music, but not because of the R&B acts you mentioned. Instead, because Top 40 music was becoming more pop instead of alternative, like it had been heading in the past 6 or 7 years. I also appreciated all the Latin acts that we heard that year too: Jennifer Lopez, Santana, Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias...

99 was a great year. 97-03 is the golden age for me with 98, 99 and 00 being the best 3 years in no particular order.

We're about to enter 2020s and the Internet will soon switch from 90s into its 2000s nostalgia phase, so let's enjoy it while it lasts

Iris, Jumper, and My Own Worst Enemy were hits during this year, so I like it. Pretty good for a year succeeding two of the best years for music (1997 and 1998).

1999 was OK, but my favorite period was from 1992-97. This! Totally agreed. I did used to like 1999, but then I realized that it was a bit of challenging year for me. So much changes went on for me. The music was decent, but overall, I generally much prefer the years 1990-1997 overall. Those were my prime years.

1999 was one of the most memorable years of my life. This was when I became more engulfed in pop culture, especially music.
On the mainstream urban side of things, I remember Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, DMX and TLC being some of the popular acts. Eminem had a little buzz with his radio singles. I was oblivious to Cash Money's (Juvenile, Lil' Wayne...) rise up until this month of that year. Destiny's Child, Blaque, and 702 were also the it-girl groups.
My favorite music videos were "Doo Wop (That Thing)" (it was still getting spins), "No Scrubs", "She's A Bitch" and "What's It Gonna Be".
