And look at all those gold and platinum singles. For popular songs. Released while they're still getting lots of airplay. I miss those days... :'(

Looking back, I think 1999 was one of the worst years since I started following charts in 1995.
This belongs in NO!stalgia. :)

Looking back, I think 1999 was one of the worst years since I started following charts in 1995. This belongs in NO!stalgia.Β :) For me, it's the opposite. 1999 brings the most nostalgia because I can associate it to a particular time in my life. The first half was the best for me though, experience-wise. So the best songs are from that era. (i,e. Britney, Sixpence None The Richer, Baz Lurhman, Monica, M. Carey, TLC, etc) *note* holy shit, I never knew B*Witched's "C'est La Vie" did so well. I just thought it was a big Radio Disney smash instead of Billboard. Same goes for Joey MCcIntyre.

I don't know which year I hated worse: 1996 or 1999. I just know that both years sucked big time, both musically and personally.

Five years ago was awful and scary, and not just the singles, Dru Hill had a 2X Platinum album & B*Witched had a Top 20 album. :o

1999 was the beginning of the end of my pophead years. I hadn't listened to much else more than the format at the time, but in a couple months I started listening to a bigger variety, eventually lessening my pop station listens. There was some real good stuff, but I don't think I've ever really liked "Believe", "Heartbreak Hotel" *yawn*, "Stay The Same", "Have You Ever", etc. However, at the time, I really remember liking the first Britney single a lot. However, I enjoyed that Britney single, "What's It Gonna Be!?", "Slide", "What It's Like", "Fly Away" (but was familiar before crossover days with this and previous), "We Like To Party" (not to mention, the unlisted "Up and Down"), "Ex-Factor", "Hard Knock Life", "The Animal Song" (lol), "Can I Get A...", and "Praise You" from there. Everything else either I hadn't heard of, always thought of as just average or sort of good, or had a love/hate perception of. Looking back, even tho I didn't listen to music regularly yet, 1994 is a far better year: www.billboard.com/bb/charts/ago/rewind.jsp?which=hot100&REWIND_YEAR=10Not only that, but in albums, AIC and Soundgarden had big-selling albums that were top-notch. Not only that, but NIN's sales without yet even having a hit yet, the best soundtrack ever in the top 100, and even non-alt. fans will find something they like. And in the singles, OutKast had a hit back then with "Player's Ball".

1999 was a bad year for me personally, but the music was great. Unfortunately, I associate much of the music from this month in 1999 with that personal tragedy of mine.

1999 may be my favorite year ever, a great year for music as well. I liked all of the late 90's years. I thought there was a bit of a dropoff in 2000 or 2001, but maybe I just got old.

1999 had its good and bad moments. I realize not a lot of you are as old as I am, but take me back to 1985-86. Those were two best years ever in music.

1999 was FAB! So many hot songs, so many good albums, so many HOT videos. Back when MTV used to be about music. Those were the days

The summer of that year was very latino, music wise. I also believe 1999 started the "millenium pop music" craze. Don't have very much memory, music wise, since i wasn't so music-focased back than (was in 3rd and 4th grade).

I think 2000 was better than 99 and so were the rest of the 90s. Didn't like all of the bubblegum pop , even rock songs were way too poppy back then (Smash Mouth , Sugar Ray ).

"We Like To Party" was good. Oh goodness, I hope I never hear that crap again... I actually think 1998 was superior to 1999 musically...

I think 1999 was the year in which music really started to go downhill. 1998 was still kind of living out of 97 and 96, which is probably near my favourite period in music... although looking back, I actually think now is better (personally) for music. Not necessarily commercially but over the last two or three years, I've found more gems then I've found collectively before 2004.

1999 was the year of the second year of the relaunch of Casey Kasem's American Top 40.

'99 was a good year musically because it was in the midst of two trends - swing revival and Latin-pop. The swing mini-craze was still on, but winding down. Latin was getting a lot more attention thanks to new artists like Enrique Iglesias, and the re-introduction of Santana.
Grunge had pretty much fizzled out by then - thank God! (C)rap was doing well, but not as successful as in other years - thank God again!
I liked the huge pop-rock hits of that year - Smash Mouth's "All Star", Sugar Ray's "Every Morning" & "Someday", Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me"; and don't forget the big comeback by Cher with her #1 song that became the biggest hit of her career - "Believe".
