Do you remember the 1971 album cut track "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zepplin that never made Billboard's Hot 100 chart since it was never released as a single despite lots of radio airplay on then AM Top 40 radio stations and most FM rock stations? If "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zepplin was released as a single, it would have gone all the way to #1 on Billboard's Hot 100! And if R&R existed in 1971, would the Led Zepplin "Stairway to Heaven" song been #1 on that R&R CHR/Pop chart? I wonder if "Stairway to Heaven" charted on the Cashbox chart.

I agree it would have been a monster hit as a single. That's obvious, because as the OP points out it was a monster hit as an album cut.
Incidentally, there was a single, but it was promo only. I think it was a slightly edited version.

It would be good if it were ever off radio. Alas, it isn't, and overplay has killed it.

The ONLY reason why I know this song is because I watched that thing that came out years ago that had "Stairway To Heaven" played backwards to reveal a satanic message!! "He'll give you 666! He built a little toolshead and made them suffer, sad satan!" God, that freaked me out!

I wonder if "Stairway to Heaven" charted on the Cashbox chart. I believe Cashbox was still a sales-only chart during the early '70s, so "Stairway" wouldn't have been eligible. Not a bad song, but not Zep's best.

I really like this song. The other day, I was at the music store trying out this very expensive guitar. When I began playing this song, the store owner grabbed the strings and pointed to a sign on the wall, that said, "No Stairway To Heaven". Denied! On the plus side, I did finally buy that guitar, with money that I found under the rug in Alice Cooper's dressing room.

The song is a classic. And if R&R existed in 1971, would the Led Zepplin "Stairway to Heaven" song been #1 on that R&R CHR/Pop chart? I wonder if "Stairway to Heaven" charted on the Cashbox chart. Of course if the song was released today, it would get huge iTunes sales as well, boosting it's position in the Hot 100. You don't need 45's or CD singles to build up sales totals any more.

An interesting tidbit: In 1991, after a Top 40 station in Arizona state switched formats to Classic Rock, it played for the first 24 hours non stop Led Zepplin's "Stairway to Heaven".

^Until they could get their hands on Classic Rock compilation CDs that were apparently very rare in Arizona, right?

Good song, but not my favorite Zep song. That would be "Kashmir".

Funny thing was the Wayne's World sign announcing no one could play it testing out the guitars.
