This classic hit made the US top 5 in 1973, and #7 in the UK on its 1993 re-issue. Bananarama did quite a good cover of it in the early 90's.

This classic hit made the US top 5 in 1973 Not quite. The song peaked at #8. Surprisingly, it was one of only five Top Ten songs by the Doobies (on Billboard, anyway).
