So what's the difference between the 'Mainstream Top 40' chart and the 'Hot 100' chart?
Has BB split those listings because there are VERY few 'Mainstream Top 40' radio stations left as opposed to the sixties, seventies or eighties?

Mainstream Top 40 is the pop chart that's used in R&R. It's a chart based on the amount of spins from Pop stations. It's similar to the Mediabase Top 40 chart, but with some panel differences.
The Hot 100 is the main overall chart and is based on audience impressions from all formats and singles sales.

^Sorry to ask this in Avril's thread, but Pulse, do you have an idea why R&B weighs so much in the Hot 100? Are there more stations in the US thay play R&B? or their markets are much bigger than Pop's? Did everything change in the 90s? market shares or orientations of radios? And to not be offtopic, it strikes me that Avril has not yet had a Top15 Hot100 Airplay with Girlfriend... and that Say It Right NEVER went to #1 on that chart either...

Down 1 to #2 on our Top 8 at 8 , first time in a month she's not #1. The songs insane rotation on my station might be finally coming to an end..

I think the market shares have changed, but the main thing is that R&B is more wide played than it was before. Overall, R&B didn't do that well on Pop stations in the 90s. And in the 90s, Pop songs could chart on rhythmic too. Nowadays, R&B is doing much better on on pop stations, and Pop isn't really played on Rhythmic anymore, except for some songs from people like Justin Timberlake and Rihanna. But they had a base of urban hits before they started doing non urban music. The last song to chart on rhythmic without any modern rhythmic connections was Toxic, and that only went Top 20. But in the 90s, you would see pure pop people like Celine Dion and Savage Garden having Top 10s on Rhythmic) But yeah, R&B has a much wider audience nowadays. The three biggest formats audience-wise are pop, rhythmic, and urban. There actually aren't that many urban stations, relatively, but they still have the big audience. R&B music can be played on all three major formats, and so they tend to do better overall on airplay Pop songs can only be played on pop (one major format) and maybe HAC and AC (two smaller formats). The three big formats move at around the same pace too, so R&B songs are usually able to combine their points more effectively, while HAC and AC are much slower. So even if something like Hurt finally goes Top 10 on AC, it's too late to be effective towards The Hot 100. And even if was moving at the same pace, its audience impressions would not be that big. On top of that, R&B also has the potential to be played on HAC and AC too, and even UAC, while pop songs won't get UAC play. That's how you have songs like WBT spending endless weeks on The Hot 100 due to the combined strength of #1s on Rhythmic, Pop, R&B, UAC, Top 10 AC, and Top 20 HAC. And about Girlfriend,it actually was #10 on last week's Hot 100 Airplay. Say It Right didn't go #1, but it did hit #4, so it's not too bad.

^Thanks a lot Pulse!!! I hadn't checked the Hot100 Airplay chart of this week yet, so I didn't know about Avril. Finally, yeah!! I just got too annoyed when songs that were not doing well on Pop (mid20s) and did not have much digital sales could be in ahigher position in the Hot 100 thanks to R&B support. Anyway, at least the last years the Hot100 and Pop are more varied than in the 90s. So, is Girlfriend getting Rhythmic support with the remix now???

No problem. Urban remixes of pop artists don't really seem to help. They always make them for songs like With Love and L.O.V.E, but it doesn't them chart on rhythmic. Girlfriend is getting some rhythmic play, but not enough to chart. I think it's mostly stations playing the album version since those stations were playing it before the remix was released. It's close to charting on Rhythmic though, but probably won't make it. Although it would be nice to see if it could.

Girlfriend charted on rhythmic :o :o :o www.radioandrecords.com/Formats/Charts/Rhy_Chart.aspIt's the first non urban song (by an artist without rhythmic connections) to chart since Toxic. :o And it's credited to the album version, so the album version is getting most of the rhythmic airplay, not the remix. :o

BTW I remember Everytime We Touch charting on Rhythmic too so... Toxic wasn't the last pop song to do that

BTW I remember Everytime We Touch charting on Rhythmic too so... Toxic wasn't the last pop song to do that EWT could be classified as dance/techno though (infact when you buy it on iTunes that's what its under) not pure pop. Girlfriend is the first pure pop since Toxic.

Toxic wasn't the last pop song to do that Oh, I'm using the Billboard Rhythmic chart, since the Mediabase Rhythmic chart is mixed with dance stations. And EWT didn't chart on the Billboard one. And I think EWT peaked at #41 on the Mediabase chart, so using 40 positions as the cutoff, it didn't chart there either

The remix is b-side to the 'When You're Gone' single. Good move and she'll have two videos to promote.

I wonder if the remix is going to help stabilize her airplay. Still one of Avril's best songs. Good job Dr. Luke!

To add to Pulse's response, rhythmic material can be heard by the truckload on CHR/Pop, CHR/Rhythmic and Urban stations, but CHR/Pop NEVER played 80% of the R&B/rap/rhythmic stuff that CHR/Rhythmic statiopns have been pounding into our brains since the mid-eighties until the late eighties.
KIIS-FM did just that by loading up on the rhythmic stuff that newly-launched KPWR, aka Power 106 did in rocketing from non-existent to #1 in the ratings here in LA in less than a year in 1987.
If you look at the CHR/Pop, CHR/Rhythmic and Urban charts right now, the percentage of music which all three formats play is FAR higher than it ever was during the sixties, seventies & most of the eighties.
Although country continues to be the format with the most listeners (since 1992, according to Katz Media Group) and most stations (2,000+, FAR out in front), having rhythmic songs getting played 100+ times per week on three formats will always outdo listenership on country stations, although country stations have FAR higher average share numbers, & they don't play their 'power' songs more than 35-42 times per week.
Add to that the HUGE percentage of listeners who listen to both country & AC stations, while the percentage of listeners which AC & CHR/Pop stations share has never been lower, according to a recent article in R&R.
It's rather easy for you to see why country artists have no problem going to #1 and/or top ten at AC and Hot AC radio, but almost NO sucess getting any traction at Top 40 radio these days, with the exception of the beyond-exceptional Carrie Underwood.
It's been that way for at least fifteen years.
Pop artists such as Roxette & Phil Collins were present at CHR/Rhythmic radio during the late eighties at CHR/Rhythmic powerhouses such as KPWR, KMEL in San Francisco and other heavyweights, but I don't see rhythmic radio going back to those days anytime soon.
Consequently, artists such as Ms. Lavigne will always be welcome at Adult Top 40 radio (or Hot AC if you will) for many MORE years to come.

Rigged!!
Back up to #1 on our Top 8 at 8 program with 17,000+ votes. Umbrella (former #1) gets knocked off completely. Looks like we aren't getting rid of this song soon enough on our rotation...
I want WYG now :'(

Avril and Pink are working their numbers on the way down...they want their new songs to smash it up quicker. I also noticed "When You're Gone" ends with "I miss you" and "Who Knew" ends with "I miss you" too.

It's alright. Both Avril & Lil' Mama look cute. :) Avril dancing is just awkward though!
