Power 106 Los Angeles played this rotation for a few months in 2000.

I like it... but I prefer Say Somethin' over this, not the greatest single choice and definitely not what Rainbow needed to compete with the pop newbies like Britney and Christina that were coming now at the same time

Great storytelling here. She knocked the harmonies and adlibs out of the park.

This song is a little bit confusing. I'm lead to believe in the first verse, she's kind of in denial about the break up? She's talking about this guy who's clinging onto her but it "aint that deep" (and kind of stalking her)...but then she stays up all night crying and drinking cause she can't stop thinking about him and everything they could have been? It seems like it IS that deep if she's trippin so hard til 5 in the morning. @antigonerising
Anyway, love the video, especially when she throws the blanket behind her.

Relaxing Cup I can see how it's a little confusing but she is singing about two guys here. She's with a new guy, but it's "not that deep" with him because she's still stuck on her old flame. She tried to move on from the old guy ("finally changed my number, got a different pager") but she still ended up finding out that he was trying to get in touch with her "probably because you see that I'm with someone new." And she's still feeling emotionally attached herself. So now she's walking around her new place as quietly as possible so that her new guy doesn't catch her crying over the old guy. She's so gorgeous in this video, even though some of the camera effects are a little cheap even for the 90s. I'm still upset this single was not the smash it deserved to be.

And that's exactly why I tagged you. It makes sense now. It's just that the jump from "cause he's head over heels but it aint that deep" to "I finally changed my number..." lead me to believe it was the same guy.

When this first came out I didn't care for it all. I thought it was to long and dragged on and on. Plus back then I wan't into all of her super Urban tracks. I'm not talking about the "Honey's, My All (Stay awhile) and "Thank God I Found You" remix but the slow midtemo tracks. Songs more in the vein of this and "BabyDoll etc. Now I actually like it lol.

I absolutely love this song. The album it is on is way uneven for me, but "Crybaby" is definitely one of its gems. The jazziness in MC's voice + the lyrics are everything.

The 4th single off Rainbow, it is a highly forgotten single by Mariah Carey. It remains one of my faved songs by Mariah, the video isn't even on her Vevo page. The single did peak at number 28 on the Hot 100 but lacked any major impact, thus it isn't one of the more memorable songs in her extensive arsenal of amazing albums. Hope you all like the song :kii:

So it's 5am and I still can't sleep Took some medicine but it's not working Love it even though it's still in the bottom portion of my favorites from the album. I absolutely love the verses though.

The adlibs at the backend of the song are incredible. Incredible showcase of her lower register throughout the entire song.

The wall of sound layering and multiple harmonies during that long ending is absolutely astounding. There's almost 50 Mariahs all screaming at you in pitch perfect harmonies.
That kind of melodic brilliance is what separates Mariah from all of her contemporaries.

At the time, this was my shit. It hasn't dated well at all though. I love her adlibs at the end though.

And she's still feeling emotionally attached herself. So now she's walking around her new place as quietly as possible so that her new guy doesn't catch her crying over the old guy. You laid out the story of the song perfectly, but what makes it even more interesting is that she's singing about crying over Derek Jeter while she's with Luis Miguel. Taylor Swift has made a career out of sh*t like that, but somehow this never became 'a thing' when Rainbow was released. It's sort of crazy Mariah released something so personal. As a track/song this somehow has a jazzy feel, and I don't mean because of the minimal scatting toward the end. This fits alongside "We Belong Together" for me, and not just because of the 2nd verses where she references the radio. They have a similar modern feel that somehow reminds you of jazz, too. And, yeah, the ad-libs are terrific.
