This is my favorite Mariah song, and perhaps my favorite song, period. Beautifully arranged, Mariah sounds gorgeous, and the lyrics just lay it all out there. I can relate to this song more than I'd like to, and perhaps that's why I love it so much. In any case, it showcases a far different, more introspective side of Mariah than her hit singles, and I wish she'd get the recognition that she deserves for creating a song like this.

This song is beautiful and I especially love that while it's one of those songs about how hard it was to be in her position as a hugely successful celebrity, she also mentioned that she didn't take anything for granted and she realizes that what she has is nothing anyone should feel sorry for. I hate when artists make songs wanting us to feel sorry for them, but Mariah didn't do that. It's definitely the most introspective song on Daydream and was really the defining moment of the subject matter of that album to me. It was a fantastic way to draw that album to a close, showcasing the melancholy sadness and feelings of entrapment and uncertainty that dominated her life in 1995.

I like it a lot, but Close My Eyes is far superior.

I love this song so much!
But I still ask myself, HOW did Tommy allow this song to be on the album??
The message is so clear, I'm sure he understood what she is saying.
BTW, their marriage problems begun much before I had imagined, this was written in '94 or '95, and I always thought their problems were more intense in '96.
I feel like she was asking for help in this song. It's pretty depressive, but that's why I love it.

i think with Mariah's case, Lyrically, she's at the top of her game when she is not happy & and when she's in a bad situation. "Petals" "Looking In" "Close My eyes" "Outside" (Just on top of my head) are perfect examples and are some of my favorite. (again lyrically) i don't think any of the Mariah's Material post-Butterfly can compete with her older stuff.. (xcept for "Petals")
"Looking In" is amazing on its own, but the Hani mix is haunting. those lyrics with that beat is simply PERFECT.

This is the first song to make me cry because it spoke to me at that time. I never had a song touch a nerve in me like this one. The lyrical and vocal content amaze me on this song. I agree probably the best artist song ever about being celebrity/ being in a bad place and not being preachy or b*tchy about it.

Love it.
Did Hani remix this because he wanted to, or were they releasing this?

Possibly one of the greatest ballads of her career and the song that made me a huge fan!
Anyone else a fan of this hidden gem?

"well here i am, for all of them to bleed...."

^ One of my most cherished moments as a lamb (and I wasn't even there in the crowd to witness it live). Just the fact that she out of nowhere performed this, for the first time ever no less, fresh off and in pain after her accident. I just love her! :'(
This is such a beautiful song in every way. The version on The Playlist is worth a listen, even if its difference from the Daydream version is quite insignificant.

Perhaps the situation with Nick surfaced feelings she had felt before when she divorced Tommy : (

Yes, this is a real gem of a song. First of all, I need to give praise to the melody. It’s really gorgeous and haunting. I do like the lyric, though some of it is a bit woe-is-me; Mariah’s vocal really sells them, though. I always wished she had sung this at the 1996 Grammys as I think she could have had ‘a moment’ with it (instead Alanis got the scaled back performance with orchestra and had a great performance).
That live performance is stellar. She obviously was coming off that terrible accident and probably shouldn’t have been performing, so the song really fit the situation and you could tell Mariah was relating to it so much.
What do you all think of this (unofficial?) remix:

Probably the most darkest song on the album. It kinda feels out of place since most of the tracks on Daydream seem very lighthearted. I think it fits in more with Butterfly, but I can really relate to the lyrics itself.

I think it fits in more with Butterfly, but I can really relate to the lyrics itself. "Long Ago" is dark, too, but I see what you mean. But then it also sort of previews Butterfly and leads into that era, so it makes sense. She's literally saying "All that stuff beforehand is kind of for show, and here is reality...and my next album will explore it."

Perhaps the most relatable song for me on Daydream. I can really identify with the lyrics.
