Surprise! I decided to get this on a little early, and since it's starting in August, that gives us five weeks, and you know what that means! Two CHR Flashbacks! By the way, with the reduced number of CHR Flashbacks now, I'm open to suggestions. If there's a certain R&R CHR chart that you'd like to see, let me know and I'll do my best to post it.
Meanwhile, we'll kick off the new Flashback feature with the year that Dionne Warwick swore I'll Never Love This Way Again, that is After The Love Has Gone, according to Earth Wind & Fire, but Maxine Nightengale was begging me Lead Me On, while ELO demanded Don't Bring Me Down, Bruce (uh, that's quite disturbing...) However, GQ insisted I Do Love You, and You Can't Change That, right Ray Parker jr?
Yep, it was indeed 1979, and here is R&R's CHR chart from August 31, 1979.
LC TC wc SONG/ARTIST 04 01 07 Lonesome Loser/Little River Band 01 02 08 After The Love Has Gone/Earth Wind & Fire 03 03 07 Sad Eyes/Robert John 02 04 09 My Sharona/The Knack 06 05 09 Don't Bring Me Down/Electric Light Orchestra 05 06 10 Lead Me On/Maxine Nightengale 10 07 06 I'll Never Love This Way Again/Dionne Warwick 08 08 07 Goodbye Stranger/Supertramp 12 09 05 Bad Case Of Loving You/Robert Palmer 16 10 03 Sail On/The Commodores 11 11 08 Let's Go/The Cars 14 12 04 Driver's Seat/Sniff'N The Tears 09 13 09 Good Times/Chic 07 14 10 The Main Event/Fight/Barbra Streisand 13 15 08 The Devil Went Down To Georgia/Charlie Daniels Band 18 16 03 Pop Muzik/M 21 17 03 Cruel To Be Kind/Nick Lowe 15 18 05 Hot Summer Nights/Night 28 19 02 Heaven Must Have Sent You/Bonnie Pointer 27 20 02 Rise/Herb Alpert 22 21 04 I Do Love You/G.Q. 23 22 02 Spooky/Atlanta Rhythm Section 26 23 02 Get It Right Next Time/Gerry Rafferty 17 24 11 You Can't Change That/Raydio 20 25 06 Suspicions/Eddie Rabbitt XX 26 01 Dependin' On You/The Doobie Brothers 24 27 13 Mama Can't Buy You Love/Elton John 19 28 12 Bad Girls/Donna Summer 25 29 14 When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman/Dr. Hook XX 30 01 Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'/Journey
Dropped: #29: Morning Dance/Spyro Gyra (3 weeks) #30: I Was Made For Loving You/Kiss (10 weeks)
Top Ten New & Active: Ain't That A Shame/Cheap Trick Rolene/Moon Martin Where Were You When I Was Falling In Love/Lobo Different Worlds/Maureen McGovern Arrow Through Me/Wings Dim All The Lights/Donna Summer I Know A Heartache When I See One/Jennifer Warnes Born To Be Alive/Patrick Hernandez Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough/Michael Jackson Midnight Wind/John Stewart
This chart was just two weeks before the chart with the most debuts ever (well, during mid-year, anyway) and six of those New & Active songs would be among the debuts. You might think that some of the other four songs debuted on the September 7 chart (one week before the nine-debut chart), but that is not right. There were actually NO debuts on that chart. I'm not kidding; even the songs near the brink of the chart (including songs by Dr. Hook, Donna Summer, and Elton John) remained on the chart for one more week. I have a feeling that Labor Day weekend played a role in that slow chart but, as we know, things were caught up the following week. Well, that's about it for this week. Be sure to check this post next week with a different chart. Which chart am I going to use? It's a surprise. You'll have to wait 'til next week to find out what chart I use.

What a coincidence... I'd planned on listening to the 9/8/79 AT40 during next Thursday night's chat, which corresponds with the R&R chart week you posted.

My next Flashback is from the same date as the above chart, only this chart is "my version" - the R&R chart with my personal preference added. And this chart is a full Top 40 chart instead of a Top 30, like R&R.
LC TC wc SONG/ARTIST 04 01 07 I'll Never Love This Way Again/Dionne Warwick 02 02 09 Sad Eyes/Robert John 03 03 08 Lonesome Loser/Little River Band 01 04 11 Lead Me On/Maxine Nightengale 05 05 10 My Sharona/The Knack 06 06 09 After The Love Has Gone/Earth Wind & Fire 09 07 11 The Main Event/Fight/Barbra Streisand 08 08 13 Mama Can't Buy You Love/Elton John 14 09 04 Sail On/The Commodores 07 10 11 Good Times/Chic 11 11 08 Goodbye Stranger/Supertramp 12 12 07 Don't Bring Me Down/Electric Light Orchestra 17 13 04 Pop Muzik/M 15 14 06 Bad Case Of Loving You/Robert Palmer 10 15 14 Bad Girls/Donna Summer 19 16 05 Driver's Seat/Sniff 'N The Tears 13 17 09 Let's Go/The Cars 23 18 03 Rise/Herb Alpert 21 19 04 Cruel To Be Kind/Nick Lowe 18 20 10 The Devil Went Down To Georgia/Charlie Daniels Band 28 21 03 Spooky/The Atlanta Rhythm Section 22 22 12 You Can't Change That/Raydio 29 23 03 Get It Right Next Time/Gerry Rafferty 24 24 13 Ring My Bell/Anita Ward 16 25 16 Gold/John Stewart 27 26 05 I Do Love You/G.Q. 31 27 03 Heaven Must Have Sent You/Bonnie Pointer 20 28 16 When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman/Dr. Hook 33 29 02 Dependin' On You/The Doobie Brothers 37 30 02 Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'/Journey 26 31 07 Suspicions/Eddie Rabbitt 25 32 06 Hot Summer Nights/Night 35 33 02 Ain't That A Shame/Cheap Trick 30 34 13 I Was Made For Lovin' You/Kiss 40 35 02 Different Worlds/Maureen McGovern XX 36 01 Rolene/Moon Martin XX 37 01 Where Were You When I Was Falling In Love/Lobo XX 38 01 Arrow Through Me/Wings XX 39 01 Dim All The Lights/Donna Summer 38 40 16 I Want You To Want Me/Cheap Trick
Droppers: #32: Morning Dance/Spyro Gyra (5 weeks) #34: Shine A Little Love/Electric Light Orchestra (16 weeks) #36: Is She Really Goin' Out With Him/Joe Jackson (11 weeks) #39: She Believes In Me/Kenny Rogers (18 weeks)
You can see where the personal aspect enters into the picture at the top of the chart. For instance, the number one song, "I'll Never Love This Way Again" by Dionne Warwick never made it to number one on Billboard or R&R, nor did the previous week's number one song, "Lead Me On" by Maxine Nightengale. Conversely, the previous week's number one song on R&R, "After The Love Has Gone" by Earth Wind & Fire, was actually still climbing my chart. It never got any higher than number five, since I didn't like the song too well. Such was the case with "Lonesome Loser" by Little River Band, which was sitting at its peak position, which it would hold for a total of seven weeks, so I obviously liked it a tad better than the EW+F song (actually significantly better, as "Lonesome Loser" finished 1979 at #16 and "After The Love Has Gone" came in at #28) but not quite as much as "I'll Never Love This Way Again" and "Lead Me On"(both of which spent four weeks on top) and "Sad Eyes", which peaked at number two for the same seven weeks that Little River Band held down the number three position. So it was a pretty stagnant top three for quite awhile. The song that would knock Dionne Warwick from her perch was "Sail On" by the Commodores, a song that DID hit #1 on the R&R chart. An interesting note about the four above songs: They finished consecutively on the year-end chart, with "Lead Me On" at #4, "I'll Never Love This Way Again" at #5, "Sad Eyes" at #6, and "Sail On" at #7. Also, we see Kenny Rogers still on the chart with "She Believes In Me", which hadn't been in R&R's Top 30 since July, so it was clear that I really loved this song. It finished off the year at number two, bested only by "What A Fool Believes" by the Doobie Brothers (which was #2 on the R&R year end chart, so it wasn't very hard at all to give it a whole ton of points). Finally, Barbra Streisand was still climbing the chart with "The Main Event/Fight", which had fallen from the pop pinnacle at R&R in early August. This song I didn't really like at all, since I didn't like Barbra Streisand's upbeat songs (which explains why I would only give "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)", her horrendous duet with Donna Summer, five weeks in the Top Ten and a fast fall afterward). So it was climbing my chart while on its way down the R&R chart and would meet its progress halfway before going down both charts. It would finish off 1979 at #36, so it was in the lower quadrant of the Top 40 (incidentally, for you who don't know, I took the Top 40 of R&R's year end chart, rearranged the songs according to my preference, and made the charts so the songs would attain their new positions with the same inverse point system that R&R used at the time). Well, I'll be back next weekend with still another chart. Which one? You'll find out then. Ciao!

Now, for the next Flashback, and it's from the same date as the two above charts. This is my Personal Top 30 chart for the week of September 9, 1979:
LC TC wc SONG/ARTIST 03 01 07 Sad Eyes/Robert John 01 02 13 Shadows In The Moonlight/Anne Murray 08 03 08 Lead Me On/Maxine Nightengale 05 04 09 You Can't Change That/Raydio 02 05 11 Is She Really Goin' Out With Him/Joe Jackson 11 06 08 Getting Closer/Wings 04 07 15 (You Really) Rock Me/Nick Gilder 06 08 12 Do It Or Die/Atlanta Rhythm Section 14 09 06 Morning Dance/Spyro Gyra 09 10 10 Heart Of The Night/Poco 07 11 15 Dance The Night Away/Van Halen 10 12 12 Gold/John Stewart 17 13 04 I'll Never Love This Way Again/Dionne Warwick 15 14 07 Up On The Roof/James Taylor 12 15 11 Mama Can't Buy You Love/Elton John 13 16 09 When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman 20 17 05 Goodbye Stranger/Supertramp 23 18 03 This Night Won't Last Forever/Michael Johnson 19 19 06 People Of The South Wind/Kansas 21 20 05 The Main Event/Fight/Barbra Streisand 16 21 18 You Take My Breath Away/Rex Smith 18 22 17 She Believes In Me/Kenny Rogers 26 23 03 Lonesome Loser/Little River Band 29 24 02 Different Worlds/Maureen McGovern 25 25 04 Let's Go/The Cars 30 26 02 Cruel To Be Kind/Nick Lowe 24 27 14 I Want You To Want Me/Cheap Trick XX 28 01 Sail On/The Commodores 22 29 16 The Logical Song/Supertramp XX 30 01 Fins/Jimmy Buffett
Droppers: #27: Rock And Roll Fantasy/Bad Company #28: Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now/McFadden & Whitehead
This chart sort of reflects some of the pecularities of my version of the pop charts, in relation to the R&R chart. For instance, "Lead Me On" by Maxine Nightengale makes a gigantic move from 8 to 3. It would eventually peak at number two, shut out by "Sad Eyes" by Robert John, which would spend a total of four weeks on top (By the way, these personal charts were made about six years after my version of the pop charts, so that explains a few differences - apparently, I didn't like "Sad Eyes" when I wrote out my version of the pop charts as much as I did when I wrote out these personal charts). Also, moving up four spots in only its fourth week on is "I'll Never Love This Way Again" by Dionne Warwick. That song also made it up to #2 and was shut out by another four week chart topper, "This Night Won't Last Forever" by Michael Johnson. Now, the songs that were near the top of the R&R chart that I didn't like too much also didn't get too high on this chart. For instance, notice the meager one-spot move of "The Main Event/Fight" by Barbra Streisand to #20. Well, that's where it peaked. It spent one more week on the chart before dropping down the chart. It would spend a total of nine weeks on. Also, "Lonesome Loser", number one on the R&R chart, is still in the lower reaches of my chart, climbing from 26 to 23. It would end up peaking at number 15 for three weeks and spending twelve weeks on the chart, so it did somewhat better than "Main Event/Fight". You'll probably notice the absence of "After The Love Has Gone" by Earth Wind & Fire. Strangely enough, that never charted, which sort of surprised me when I was leafing through these charts. When I was making up these charts in the spring of 1999, I think that I had slated it to debut on the chart sometime in August, but I made an error and it was left off the chart. This also happened with "Makin' It" by David Naughton. At least neither of them were exceptionally great songs in my opinion; I'd hate to inadvertently exclude a song that I really liked! Strangely enough, "My Sharona" by the Knack didn't debut until late September, when it was just about ready to start heading on down the Billboard chart (and by which time it had already fallen off the R&R chart). This meant that I wasn't too crazy about the song and it only peaked at number 24. One song on the chart that many of you might not recognize is "(You Really) Rock Me" by Nick Gilder. That was a song that only made it to around the halfway point of the chart and, had I not gone to the beach a lot during the summer of 1979, I would never have known about the song. The jukebox at the beach house, where I often went to play pinball, had the song and it got played a lot. So that song is one that always reminds me of that fun summer, back when I was only seven years of age. Sigh, if only things were that easy now... Anyway, that song peaked at number two for four weeks as of July 22. The song that edged it out of the number one spot was "She Believes In Me" by Kenny Rogers. Well, next week, I'd normally be featuring the Adult Contemporary chart but, unfortunately, I don't have any Adult Contemporary charts from 1979 (actially, it was called the Pop/Adult chart back then). If anyone here happens to have those charts, or knows of any means to get them (I've already tried R&R and they can't find the microfiched copies anywhere), please let me know. In the meantime, I'll choose another R&R chart next week and the week after, I'll cap off September by using my version of the chart and who knows; I might post my corresponding personal Top 30 chart. See ya then!

Wow, I almost forgot about this feature already. That's not a good sign.
Well, so that I don't get way behind, I'll try my best to get caught up tonight.
Since I don't have any Adult Contemporary charts from 1979, we'll go to another year and post the R&R chart from then. This was the year that Huey Lewis was happy to be Stuck With You while Tina Turner was looking for a Typical Male which was all a Matter Of Trust, according to Billy Joel. Lisa Lisa had run out of trust and was All Cried Out over you, along with Cult Jam, Full Force, Paul Anthony, and Bowlegged Lou. Cyndi Lauper said that she wanted to see your True Colors come shining through and Madonna was True Blue. It was 1986, and here is the chart from September 26, 1986:
LC TC wc SONG/ARTIST 01 01 09 Stuck With You/Huey Lewis & The News 02 02 07 Throwing It All Away/Genesis 05 03 07 When I Think Of You/Janet Jackson 03 04 09 Dreamtime/Daryl Hall 06 05 10 Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)/Glass Tiger 12 06 05 Typical Male/Tina Turner 11 07 06 Heartbeat/Don Johnson 08 08 08 Heaven In Your Eyes/Loverboy 14 09 05 True Colors/Cyndi Lauper 10 10 07 Two Of Hearts/Stacey Q 04 11 10 Friends And Lovers/Gloria Loring & Carl Anderson 17 12 05 I Didn't Mean To Turn You On/Robert Palmer 09 13 09 Love Zone/Billy Joel 15 14 07 Love Walks In/Van Halen 07 15 12 Dancing On The Ceiling/Lionel Richie 19 16 06 Missionary Man/The Eurythmics 23 17 04 Sweet Love/Anita Baker 22 18 06 A Matter Of Trust/Billy Joel 13 19 09 Walk This Way/Run DMC 26 20 04 All Cried Out/Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam w/Full Force 27 21 04 Girl Can't Help It/Journey 32 22 02 Human/The Human League 16 23 11 Take My Breath Away/Berlin 30 24 03 Take Me Home Tonight/Eddie Money f/Ronnie Spector 24 25 06 Money$ Too Tight To Mention/Simply Red 31 26 03 I'll Be Over You/Toto 18 27 14 Higher Love/Steve Winwood 21 28 12 Words Get In The Way/Miami Sound Machine 40 29 02 Amanda/Boston 33 30 03 In Your Eyes/Peter Gabriel 34 31 03 Paranoimia/Art Of Noise f/Max Headroom 20 32 11 Baby Love/Regina XX 33 01 True Blue/Madonna 25 34 13 Venus/Bananarama 38 35 02 Emotion In Motion/Ric Ocasek XX 36 01 I Am By Your Side/Corey Hart XX 37 01 The Next Time I Fall/Peter Cetera w/Amy Grant 39 38 02 Another Heartache/Rod Stewart XX 39 01 You Give Love A Bad Name/Bon Jovi 28 40 13 Sweet Freedom/Michael McDonald

Now, for the Flashback that I should have posted this past weekend. This is my version of the 1986 chart posted above:
LC TC wc SONG/ARTIST 01 01 09 Stuck With You/Huey Lewis & The News 03 02 10 Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)/Glass Tiger 05 03 07 When I Think Of You/Janet Jackson 09 04 06 Typical Male/Tina Turner 06 05 07 Throwing It All Away/Genesis 10 06 06 Heartbeat/Don Johnson 02 07 12 Dancing On The Ceiling/Lionel Richie 14 08 05 True Colors/Cyndi Lauper 13 09 05 I Didn't Mean To Turn You On/Robert Palmer 04 10 11 Take My Breath Away/Berlin 12 11 08 Heaven In Your Eyes/Loverboy 07 12 09 Dreamtime/Daryl Hall 15 13 06 Two Of Hearts/Stacey Q 23 14 03 Human/The Human League 08 15 10 Friends And Lovers/Gloria Loring & Carl Anderson 21 16 04 All Cried Out/Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam w/Full Force 18 17 07 Love Walks In/Van Halen 19 18 06 A Matter Of Trust/Billy Joel 11 19 08 Love Zone/Billy Ocean 22 20 04 Sweet Love/Anita Baker 26 21 04 Girl Can't Help It/Journey 25 22 05 Missionary Man/The Eurythmics 37 23 02 Amanda/Boston 24 24 06 Money$ Too Tight To Mention/Simply Red 30 25 03 Take Me Home Tonight/Eddie Money f/Ronnie Spector 31 26 03 I'll Be Over You/Toto 32 27 03 Earth Angel/New Edition 16 28 09 Walk This Way/Run DMC XX 29 01 True Blue/Madonna 20 30 15 Papa Don't Preach/Madonna 28 31 12 Venus/Bananarama 17 32 14 Higher Love/Steve Winwood 38 33 02 Emotion In Motion/Ric Ocasek 35 34 03 Paranoimia/Art Of Noise f/Max Headroom XX 35 01 The Next Time I Fall/Peter Cetera f/Amy Grant XX 36 01 I Am By Your Side/Corey Hart 40 37 02 Another Heartache/Rod Stewart 27 38 12 Words Get In The Way/Miami Sound Machine XX 39 01 You Give Love A Bad Name/Bon Jovi XX 40 01 In Your Eyes/Peter Gabriel
Droppers: #29: The Captain Of Her Heart/Double (8 weeks) #33: Baby Love/Regina (10 weeks) #34: Sweet Freedom/Michael McDonald (12 weeks) #36: Twist And Shout/The Beatles (3 weeks) #39: Man-Size Love/Klymaxx (9 weeks)
One of the most notable difference on this chart is the presence of "Earth Angel" by New Edition, which never appeared on the R&R chart. However, at the time I wrote this chart (September, 1994), I loved the song a lot and just had to include it. Also, Huey Lewis & The News, who was spending their third and last week at #1 on the R&R chart, was actually spending their SIXTH of SEVEN weeks at the top. So that means a few songs that hit #1 on R&R never made it to the top: "Higher Love" by Steve Winwood, "Dancing On The Ceiling" by Lionel Richie, and "Throwing It All Away" by Genesis. I didn't like that song very much, so I gave Huey Lewis an additional week at the top and Genesis peaked at #4 (just like they did on Billboard). Needless to say, "Stuck With You" was the number one song of 1986 on my version of the chart, like it was on R&R.

What's wrong with the first one? You don't really think that it's Jessica Simpson, do you? She was only six years old back then!
EDIT: Nevermind, now I see what the error was. I must have mistaken the eleven for a four. I was doing this while on a chat room last night, though I guess I could have taken my time. Last night's chat was THE most boring one in which I've participated in longer than I care to remember.

There were only about five of us and we didn't have a very interesting conversation going. We were all out of there before 10:30 (CST).

I had to take a CD to my friend's karaoke show, and I ended up staying later than expected (and drinking more than I intended). Now I know why I don't go out on Thursday nights.
