Darlene Love started as a background singer for Sam Cooke and Elvis and was discovered by producer Phil Spector. Her voice is one of the most under-appreciated in all pop music. She was just as strong and just as soulful as Aretha in the material she sang.
Some songs she did as lead singer for the Crystals, (He's a Rebel, He's Sure the Boy I Love) Bobby B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans (Not Too Young to Get Married, Why Do Lovers Break Each Others Hearts), the Blossoms, (Good Good Lovin') or solo in her own right, (A little ditty some of you may have heard before called Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) that's right, she was the original) Her performances on the Phil Spector Christmas album are all classics and receive a lot of airplay today. She definitely deserved to be a bigger star than she was and should have a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. My favorite song of hers was one called "A Long Way to Be Happy." When she sings, "New dreams can't be born until the old ones have finished.," I get chills. Not many can sing that line with such strength and grace. Love was the victim of bad timing, if she was involved with Aretha and others in Memphis, the story may have been different, but sadly, as Spector's songs went out of style, so did her career. But her voice and songs are great to hear today. She shows up every year to sing "Christmas" on Lettermen and some of you may know her as Danny Glover's wife in the "Lethal Weapon" movies. Her voice is as good as it was then. Do yourself a favor and download her greatest hits at I-Tunes now. You'll be better for it. If anyone has heard of her before, let me know what you think.
