No, seriously! Back in the first half of the 1990s, I subscribed to Gavin Magazine. In 1993, they celebrated their 35th anniversary and, as part of it, they included a vintage magazine from 1965 (actually, it was several blue pages, with only one chart). And, there was a note under their pop chart (which went down to 50 back then) that said "Declining action below number 25 is omitted". I couldn't believe it. I was pretty new to the recurrent rule thing, since I'd only heard of one, the one used by Billboard around that time, so I thought that it had been around for quite some time. But actually, back in the 60s, Gavin Magazine was the only one with a "recurrent rule", before that term even existed.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Billboard also had an (unwritten) recurrent rule from around 1964 through the end of the decade. A quick scan of the charts during that period shows virtually all the big hits from that era fell off the Hot 100 from inside the Top 50. But it's interesting that Gavin actually noted their recurrent rule. :)

Why did Gavin stop making a chart?

I guess they weren't making as much revenue as they used to. It was hard to compete with Billboard and R&R, which were more popular. Their charts were becoming more and more of a joke anyway. The last week positions were totally inaccurate and there were songs going recurrent far before their time (VH-1 Weekly Rewind, anyone?) I became so fed up that I stopped keeping tabs on their charts.

^^ That would be it... they simply couldn't compete and they weren't as quick to embrace the new technologies like R&R & Billboard did with most of their charts...
