Is Q-Tip on the album version? I think it should have been left as an album track, it seems weird that she led with it... actually I think it was ahead of it's time. It would have done better today, more than "just a little while (crap)"

It would have done better today, more than "just a little while (crap)" GTIG would've went to the Top 5 on the HOT 100 in today's market....so yes it was ahead of its time. I think had a single been released it would've went Top 10 in the US still. See GTIG was a big hit at Urban radio and Urban singles seemed to sell better at that time. I mean Toni Braxton's YMMH debuted at #7 with much less airplay than Janet had at the time GTIG was released....

Great song! Never gets old. On the CD version ...
Janet: what's.. what's the next song? Q-Tip: The one about me
LOL!

This song was actually a big hit for Janet in the UK. It reached #6 and had a nice lengthy run.

Yeah, this is easily my favorite Janet song (it's also my favorite Janet video). It made #3 on R&B airplay, and did very well in the UK, so it wasn't really a FLOP. It just didn't match the success of her other lead singles.
I think the album would have had a much different fate if "Together Again" had been the lead single. Too bad, because I consider this her best album, even though there are not many commercial hits to be found on it.

I really loved this song. It was just a lot of fun. The samples were cleverly used. I couldn't imagine the song without them.
And that video was real hot.
Not my fave song from The Velvet Rope, but it was a highlight.

Great track, and a great use of the Joni Mitchell sample. Glad it was the kick-off to that album. Her style (esp. the hair) was pretty wack when the album came out, but that's kinda what made it cool.
While it only peaked inthe 30s at pop, it was top 3 at urban radio and did OK at rhythmic.

I hated Janet's cover, and it was the only single I didn't like off of Velvet Rope. It certainly didn't do Joni's Big Yellow Taxi justice.

I always want to buy the Velvet Rope but when I go to music stores I always end buying another albums. >:(

This is one of my favorite Janet tracks. Like The Velvet Rope, it's so underrated. She did a very nice job with it.

A fellow poster ( ;) ) hooked me up with the radio edit, and it makes the song sound even better.
This is most likely in my Janet Top 3. I instinctively loved it upon its release, and loved it even more after I saw the video. It practically has no burn out factor for me.

the first time i heard this song I turned the radio station midway through the song. I thought the song was horrid. Absolutely horrid. Then two weeks later I gave it another shot. After the second listen I fell in love with this song. This is in my top 5 Janet! So glad she is still performing this song on tour.

I still like that song. It brings back memories of 92.3 The Beat back in '97-98. KJLH played it too but without Q-Tips rap break.

I never really heard it much at the time, but the song's amazing. J Dilla beats before he was too known, really. There's that minimal yet effective sampling of "Big Yellow Taxi." Q-Tip would later be sampled in part of the song. About the only thing bad about it is that Janet nearly becomes a cameo on her own song, but getting to eventually hear it now, I love it.
In retrospect, it might be the best of the singles or even among the songs on the album.

^ Q-Tip wasn't sampled. He rapped on the track. I think they were saying that Q-Tip's part of this song has been sampled ("why you wanna go and do that?") It's understandable that people were turned off by this single when it was released. People always expected Janet to release catchy dance-pop, and this was a mellow, subdued track that fit right in with the advent of the neo-soul movement. I love the song for what it is, and the video is one of my favorite Janet videos. She was just so "cool" and black and urban when The Velvet Rope project started out. The Def Radio Mix is one of my favorite Janet remixes.
