Love this song. Up there with my favorites of his. I don't know if it was ever released as a single, however many people seem to be familiar with it, so I think it was.
I started playing acoustic guitar when I was 11, and this, along with a few easy Bob Dylan songs, were the first songs my dad taught me. I especially love the instrumental last part.

I think there may already be an older topic on this song, but I could be wrong.
Anyway, it always makes me think of Silence Of The Lambs (and the poor little kitty in the window who never got his dinner). :(

I figured there would be an older topic. I tried searching 500 days back and couldn't find anything. I was actually kind of surprised, I figured someone would have said something about it.
Lol @ what you think of when you hear it.
They played it on an episode of Dawson's Creek when they showed Katie Holmes once. Sometimes I think of that.
And sometimes I think if Tom Petty's "American Girl" grew up to be Guess Who / Lenny Kravitz's "American Woman".

According to Bubbling Under Singles & Albums by Joel Whitburn, American Girl peaked at #109 on 5/21/94. If that is correct, it must have been re-released sometime in 1994 (for some reason)? Anyway, it says it was first released as a single on Shelter 62007 in 1977 but didn't chart.

Yeah, it was re-released in 1994 in conjunction with his greatest hits album (I think).

I was also kind of surprised. I liked this song quite a bit. He sounds quite a bit younger on this song in comparison to later works. I also really like that outro.
The re-release is news to me. But then again, I didn't follow radio when I was like 6-7 years old.

I like it.
Of course, this now will always remind me of that scene from "The Silence Of The Lambs". The girl was singing this right before she was kidnapped by Buffalo Bill.
Oops, I saw someone made the movie reference!

This song was also played around the beginning of Fast Times At Ridgemont High.
I like it, one of my favorites from him.

One of my favorite Tom Petty songs.
