It was only it's 20th week and it didn't meet the new criteria for early exit. What is the new criteria? I don't get why "Love Story" fell off in like week 12, but this didn't in week 20.

Here's a quote from zazie in last weeks chart predictions thread that explains it pretty well. Interesting comment about Here. It had a 6 million gain on 1/17, followed by 2 losses in a row. I thought it needed 3 down weeks in a row to trigger the new rule. Its loss on 1/10 wouldn't count, not to mention that the Christmas week is not usually counted against songs. So basically because it didn't have 3 straight unbulleted weeks, and wasn't past week 20, it got an extra week. Confusing, I know.

Billboard Chart BeatHELLO 'GOODBYE': The new Rascal Flatts single, "Here Comes Goodbye" (Lyric Street), blasts onto Hot Country Songs at No. 29, good enough to be the highest new entry of the young calendar year and the second-highest debut of the group's career. Until this week, the highest new entry of 2009 was "I Told You So," the Carrie Underwood ballad that opened last week at No. 37. Slipping to third place on the list of highest debuts is another Underwood song, her rendition of "O Holy Night," which entered at No. 39 the week of Jan. 10. Of the 35 Rascal Flatts tracks to appear on Hot Country Songs, the only tune to debut higher than "Here Comes Goodbye" is "Take Me There," which began its chart life at No. 24 the week of July 21, 2007. 'GONE' FOR GOOD: For the first time since he began charting in April 2001, Blake Shelton has two consecutive No. 1 titles on Hot Country Songs. "She Wouldn't Be Gone" (Warner Bros.) is Shelton's fifth chart-topper and follows his cover of Michael Buble's "Home," which ruled for two weeks in July 2008. Shelton's other three No. 1 hits are: "Austin," five weeks (2001) "The Baby," three weeks (2003) "Some Beach," four weeks (2004) "She Wouldn't Be Gone" is the sixth song to advance to No. 1 in 2009. Only "Here" by Rascal Flatts occupied the summit for more than one week (it was on top for two frames). Spending one week each in first place: "Already Gone" by Sugarland, "Start a Band" by Brad Paisley (duetting with Keith Urban) and "Country Boy" by Alan Jackson.

Not saying I expected it to fail. But I certainly didn't expect that...

Billboard Chart Alert: • Dierks Bentley's new album, "Feel That Fire," lights up the No. 3 spot on the Billboard 200 and the pinnacle of Top Country Albums with 71,000. It's the singer's fourth straight top 10 set on the Billboard 200 and third chart-topper on Country Albums. His last studio set, 2006's "Long Trip Alone," bowed at Nos. 5 and 1 on the charts, respectively, with 82,000. On Top Country Albums, he breaks up Taylor Swift's monopoly of the top slot, as her "Fearless" album has been No. 1 for the past 12 straight weeks. • Dierks Bentley collects his sixth No. 1 on Hot Country Songs as the title track from his new album "Feel That Fire" hits the top this week. He earned his first No. 1 with his debut single, "What Was I Thinkin'," back in September 2003. Since then, he's notched No. 1s with "Come a Little Closer," "Settle for a Slowdown," "Every Mile a Memory" and "Free and Easy (Down the Road I Go)" . . . Elsewhere on Hot Country Songs, Darius Rucker claims his second top 10 single as "It Won't Be Like This for Long" climbs from No. 11 to No. 8 in its 17th chart week. The Hootie and the Blowfish frontman previously reached No. 1 with "Don't Think I Don't Think About It" in October of last year.

Next week's chart should be interesting, at least in terms of recurrent songs. "She Wouldn't Be Gone," "More Like Her," and "Belongs To You" all appear to be headed recurrent. Jimmy Wayne will also go recurrent unless he can rally (he's down 250k for the first two days of the week). If all four of these songs leave the chart, we could see the lowest audience number for the #40 song in a long time.

If all four of these songs leave the chart, we could see the lowest audience number for the #40 song in a long time. We'll get re-entries from Adam Gregory and Trent Tomlinson in the 2 million range. But after that, the last two top 40 openings will go to songs with low audiences, assuming all 4 songs leave. (3 of the 4 look very likely to go.) Doesn't help that some of the contenders are trending down instead of making gains. Maybe we'll get a high debut from a surprise country artist?

Bidding farewell to Fred Bronson's last Chart Beat: FAMILY TIES: With separate bows on Hot Country Songs, Miley Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus are the first daughter and father to have new entries on this chart in the same week since March 3, 1990, when Johnny Cash and Rosanne Cash had simultaneous debuts. Let’s start with the Cyrus family: Miley’s “The Climb” (Walt Disney/Hollywood/Lyric Street) is new at No. 48 while Billy Ray’s “Back to Tennessee” (Walt Disney/Lyric Street) opens at No. 59. Both songs are from the soundtrack to “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” due for release on March 24. Miley and Billy Ray have charted together before but as a duo. Their “Ready, Set, Don’t Go” peaked at No. 4 in 2008. As for the Cash family, daughter Rosanne was a guest artist with John Hiatt on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “One Step Over the Line,” which entered Hot Country Songs the week of March 3, 1990. That same week, father Johnny was teamed with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson on another debuting title, “Silver Stallion.” THE RACE GOES TO THE SWIFT: Taylor Swift gets the penultimate Chart Beat item, thanks to her tenacity on The Bllboard 200, where her “Fearless” album is No. 1 for an 11th week. That calls for one last update of the list of solo female artists with the longest-running No. 1 albums in Billboard chart history. “Fearless” is now tied for fifth place: 15 weeks: "Tapestry," Carole King (1971) 14 weeks: "Whitney Houston," Whitney Houston (1986) 13 weeks: "Judy at Carnegie Hall," Judy Garland (1961) 12 weeks: "Jagged Little Pill," Alanis Morissette (1995) 11 weeks: "Whitney," Whitney Houston (1987) 11 weeks: "Mariah Carey," Mariah Carey (1991) 11 weeks: "Fearless," Taylor Swift (2008) If “Fearless” does get a 12th week at the summit, it won’t be next week. U2’s “No Line on the Horizon” seems certain to debut at No. 1 on The Billboard 200.

Carrie now has 3 songs on the chart. Getting those points! Yeah, she's going to have a huge first half of the year, when I do the June update on my Joel Whitburn's all-time Top Country Artists thread. She was at #226 at the end of 2008, and after only three months of 2009, she's vaulted all the way up to a tie for #185. Looks like another 400-pt year, which would get her around #175 by the end of '09.

Billboard Chart Alert: • Darius Rucker becomes the first male artist to send his first two entries on the Hot Country Songs chart to No. 1 since Clay Walker 15 years ago, as "It Won't Be Like This for Long" ascends 2-1. Rucker's "Don't Think I Don't Think About It," the first single from his debut country album, "Learn to Live," led for two weeks in October. Rucker is just the third male artist to begin with back-to-back No. 1s on the tally in the last 20 years, joining Walker and Clint Black.

I believe that country radio is afraid of not letting Darious reach #1 because he is black. They don't want to be called racists. They won't let a woman over 35 reach #1 ever again unless she is married to President Obama.

Odd to see Pat Green on there. A Texas single? No, just unsolicited airplay (primarily from Texas I would think). I think the threshold to reach the T60 was exceptionally low this week, which certainly played a part.
