And what about Chesney's current song with Dave Mathews? Should that break his current streak? It's not as if Dave Mathews' label is going to release another country single that undermines I'm Alive. But on the other hand Chesney's releasing an abnormal and risky single by collaborating with a non-country artist, so maybe this one also shouldn't break a streak. The case of Chesney & DMB is an exceptional one. It isn't often that a country and non-country collaboration has the potential to ruin a #1 singles streak. While it's true there aren't going to be any DMB singles competing with "I'm Alive" for airplay, the same could be said of a hypothetical...I don't know... Josh Turner and John Anderson collaboration. I don't think John Anderson has released anything lately, but then again, I'm way out of the country radio loop. Where do you start drawing the line? Again, I think you have to just put all collaborations in the same category and call them for what they are.

I would count duets to the persons cd its from. So to me 'im alive' if it doesnt #1 would end kennys streak since it is on his cd. But it wouldnt end matthews....i know he doesnt have a streak but if he was lets say darius rucker.

I can see where you're coming from with that... although if, say, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood dueted (again) and released it, and the song missed #1 (Can't see how that would ever happen), I'd probably count it as both their streaks being over. But then, that begs the question, what if the track is featured on both artist's albums? Like Bon Jovi and LeAnn Rimes with "Til We Ain't Strangers Anymore".

I originally shared this sentiment, but then I got to thinking again....What if there was a duet that was only featured on a soundtrack and didn't appear on a regular studio album? Suppose Garth Brooks' "To Make You Feel My Love" was a duet for instance. That shouldn't make it any less of an "official" single because it wasn't on a studio cd. A radio single is a radio single, regardless of where it originates. Again, I think you have to go the all or nothing route.

First, to dcowboy: Of course, it would NOT end Dave Matthews streak as he is making his FIRST appearance on the country charts! Second, to wamufam: Even if Garth Brooks did record the song as a duet, you can bet your bottom dollar he would have rereleased the CD with the duet on it to generate more album sales (as if he needed it). I would certainly include that as part of ANY streak he may have had (the song Brooks had before that one was Two Pina Coladas (#1 in 1998) and the one after was Burnin' The Roadhouse Down with Steve Wariner (#26 in 1998). However, it was the title track of Wariner's CD).

The song "To Make You Feel My Love" was on the Hope Floats soundtrack and later included in his boxed set, but it was never on his current studio album at the time "Sevens". In fact, the single "To Make You Feel My Love" was sandwiched between two singles from Sevens "Two Pina Coladas" and "You Move Me". Edit: "To Make You Feel My Love" did actually hit #1, so if Garth hadn't put the song in his boxed set, would the "Hope Floats" soundtrack have gotten credit for the #1? I don't think it should matter where the single originates. I think you have to put all solo efforts in one category and all collaborations in another. There are simply too many exceptions and "what if's?" to have it any other way.

Which, as you pointed out, he put it in his boxed set (on the Fresh Horses CD)! I should be slapped silly for forgetting IT WAS on the Hope Floats soundtrack!

I wonder what will be number 1 after CC and NYN take their turns at the top spot.
It should be close between Reba and Luke Bryan.
I think it will be Luke for a week and then Reba. I think Reba is capaple of staying there for 3 or more weeks because there is not much competition behind her. (Fifteen and I'm Alive don't look like number 1 songs right now) After Reba it will probably be Dierks or even Bonfire?[sigh]

As much as I would not like for that to happen, I am almost sure Craig will have better material in the future, so a bad #1 song could give him some future good top 10s!

Luke Bryan is about 5 Million ahead of Kenny, Craig, Taylor, and Reba...so he will probably be next in line.

1. CARRIE'S #1 COWBOY: Would that be Tony Romo? JUST KIDDING! However, Carrie Underwood DOES draw top ink for the eighth time as Cowboy Casanova hits #1. In the meantime, 2009 marks the fourth consecutive year that Underwood has had a #1 hit. The years and hits are: 2006: Jesus, Take The Wheel Before He Cheats 2007: Wasted So Small 2008: All-American Girl Last Name Just A Dream 2009: Cowboy Casanova The last time a female artist scored #1 hit for four consecutive years was Faith Hill (remember her from the 2006 C.M.A. Awards?). She did it for five consecutive years. The years and hits were: 1996: It Matters To Me 1997: It's Your Love-with Tim McGraw 1998: This Kiss Let Me Let Go 1999: Breathe 2000: The Way You Love Me Coming just two months shy of the fourth anniversary of Underwood hitting #1 with Jesus, Take The Wheel, the ONLY female artist to score her first eight #1s FASTER was Tammy Wynette. She did it in two years, ten months between My Elusive Dreams with David Houston in 1967 to He Loves Me All The Way in 1970. The hits and years were: 1. My Elusive Dreams-with David Houston-1967 2. I Don't Wanna Play House-1967 3. Take Me To Your World-1968 4. D-I-V-O-R-C-E-1968 5. Stand By Your Man-1968 6. Singing My Song-1969 7. The Ways To Love A Man-1969 8. He Loves Me All The Way-1970 2. THE STREAK IS OVER: By falling to #6 (from #2), Brad Paisley's Welcome To The Future breaks his streak of 10 #1s in a row. The last time he peaked at #2 was in 2004 with Little Moments. However, it is his 10th consecutive #1 hit in Canada. His ten in a row ranks as the sixth best chart streak in history. The others: 1. Alabama-21-1980-1987 2. Sonny James-16-1967-1971 3. Buck Owens-14-1963-1967 4. George Strait-11-1986-1989 5. Ronnie Milsap-10-1980-1983 6. Brad Paisley-10-2006-2009 3. GATHER AROUND THE BONFIRE: Craig Morgan collects his second top ten hit on the BNA label with Bonfire (#10 this week). His first was Love Remembers from 2008 (#9). He collected five top tens on the Broken Bow label between 2003-2008 including That's What I Love About Sunday (his and B.B.'s first chart topper). 4. PLAY ON AT #1: Carrie Underwood continues to be a hot seller out there. Her Play On CD hits #1 on the country and top 200 charts after selling 318,000 copies in its first week. How this compares to her other two CDs: 1. Some Hearts-2005-#1 country and #2 top 200-315,000 2. Carnival Ride-2007-#1 country and #1 top 200-527,000 3. Play On-2009-#1 country and #1 top 200-318,000 The last female to do so well sales wise was Faith Hill. Her last three studio CDs (discounting her Christmas CD) all entered #1 on BOTH charts. They were: 1. Breathe-1999 2. Cry-2002 3. Fireflies-2005 5. C.M.A. AWARDS: Good luck to all of the nominees on tonight's awards show and congratulations to all of the winners! 6. #1 HITS FROM YESTERYEAR: These were the top hits from 2004, 1999, 1994, 1989, and 1984: 2004: In A Real Love-Phil Vassar-Arista 1999: I Love You-Martina McBride-RCA 1994: Livin' On Love-Alan Jackson-Arista 1989: Burnin' Old Memories-Kathy Mattea-Mercury 1984: Give Me One More Chance-Exile-Epic 7. MILESTONE TOP TEN CHART: Well, she DID say she was 'a little bit country', but Marie Osmond was the queen of the charts in late 1973. In the meantime, she remains the YOUNGEST female artist with a #1 hit (take that, Taylor Swift). The Osmonds were the #2 singing family group during the first half of the 1970s (the Jackson Five were #1). In the meantime, Marie wanted to strike out on her own and found the perfect song to do so. She chose Paper Roses (the Anita Bryant classic) and wanted the perfect producer. Sonny James was available and agreed to produce the track. The results were magic: a #1 country hit that was a #1 adult contemporary hit and matched the #5 placing on the pop charts that Bryant made in 1960. She only had one more major (top 20) hit during the 1970s (I'm Leaving It All Up To You with her brother Donny in 1974-#17). She finally had a hot streak of hits during the 1980s. They were: 1. Meet Me In Montana-with Dan Seals (we miss you Dan)-1985-#1 and C.M.A. Vocal Duo of the Year Award 2. There's No Stopping Your Heart-1986-#1 3. Read My Lips-1986-#4 4. You're Still New To Me-with Paul Davis (we miss you too Paul)-1986-#1 5. I Only Wanted You-1987-#14 Within a year of title #5 peaking, she stopped having big hits altogether. More recently, she was on Dancing With The Stars and released a greatest hits CD last year. Even Donny is on this year's edition of D.W.T.S. (he did say he was a 'little bit of rock and roll'). I made the claim of her being the youngest female with a #1 hit. Let us compare her to two other female artists:
ARTIST-DATE OF BIRTH-FIRST #1 AND DATE-AGE OF ARTIST: 1. Marie Osmond-10-59-Paper Roses-11-73-14 years, 1 month 2. LeAnn Rimes-08-82-One Way Ticket Because I Can-12-96-14 years, 4 months 3. Tanya Tucker-10-58-What's Your Mama's Name-05-73-14 years, 7 months Here is what the chart looked like back then:
BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING NOVEMBER 11, 1973: 1. PAPER ROSES-MARIE OSMOND-MGM 2. Sawmill-Mel Tillis-MGM 3. Country Sunshine-Dottie West-RCA 4. We're Gonna Hold On-Tammy Wynette and George Jones-Epic 5. Don't Give Up On Me-Jerry Wallace-MCA 6. Ridin' My Thumb To Mexico-Johnny Rodriguez-Mercury 7. The Most Beautiful Girl-Charlie Rich-Epic 8. 'Till The Water Stops Runnin'-Billy Crash Craddock-ABC 9. I'm Your Woman-Jeanne Pruett-MCA 10. Sing About Love-Lynn Anderson-Columbia

1. LADY ANTEBELLUM NEEDS #1: The law firm of Scott, Haywood, and Kelley, better known as Lady Antebellum collects their second #1 hit with Need You Now. This is the follow up to their C.M.A. Single of the Year I Run To You (which helped them win C.M.A. Vocal Group of the Year). This comes two weeks after another new group netted their second #1, the Zac Brown Band and Toes. 2. C.M.A. CHART: This is where all the C.M.A. winners are in this week's chart: 1. Need You Now-Lady Antebellum-Vocal Group and Single 2. Cowboy Casanova-Carrie Underwood-C.M.A. Hostess (she does merit a mention) 8. Fifteen-Taylor Swift-Entertainer, Female Vocalist, Album, Video, and International Artist 12. History In The Making-Darius Rucker-New Artist 30. American Saturday Night-Brad Paisley-Male Vocalist, Music Event (with Keith Urban), and C.M.A. Host 41. 'Til Summer Comes Around-Keith Urban-Music Event (with Brad Paisley) 3. MARTIN LUTHER KING: He has been name checked in two recent hits: Welcome To The Future by Brad Paisley and Southern Voice by Tim McGraw. His I Have A Dream speech was sampled in the Eddie Rabbitt hit American Boy (#11 in 1990). He would have turned 81 in January, 2010. 4. GREEN LIGHT TO THE TOP TEN: David Nail finally breaks into the top ten with Red Light (#10 this week). It 'only' took him 38 weeks to get there. It beats the previous record of 37 weeks by Kellie Pickler and Best Days Of Your Life as far as 2009 is concerned. Pickler is at #28 with Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You. 5. THE WRONG SEASON: Keith Urban debuts at #41 with 'Til Summer Comes Around. It will chart during the autumn of 2009, the winter of 2009-2010, and the spring of 2010. By the time summer of 2010 hits, it should be off the charts. 6. THE TOP SELLERS: These were the top selling CDs in 2004, 1999, 1994, 1989, and 1984: 2004: 50 Number Ones-George Strait-MCA 1999: LeAnn Rimes-LeAnn Rimes-Curb 1994: Stones In The Road-Mary Chapin Carpenter-Columbia 1989: No Holdin' Back-Randy Travis-Warner Bros. 1984: City Of New Orleans-Willie Nelson 7. MILESTONE TOP TEN CHART: I recently saluted Islands In The Stream, the duet between Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, that became the last song to top ALL three charts (country, pop, and adult contemporary). So the question is, what was the first triple #1 hit? In chronological order, Billboard began a country singles chart in January, 1944. Then the rock and roll era began in July, 1955. Finally, Billboard began an adult contemporary singles chart in July, 1961. Let us list the first seven #1 A.C. hits plus weeks at #1: 1. The Boll Weevil Song-Brook Benton-Mercury-3 2. Together-Connie Francis-MGM-1 3. Wooden Heart-Joe Dowell-Smash-3 4. Michael-The Highwaymen-United Artists-5 5. Mexico-Bob Moore and His Orchestra-Monument-1 6. Sad Movies Make Me Cry-Sue Thompson-Hickory-1 7. Big Bad John-Jimmy Dean-Columbia-10 Even though title #7 began its A.C. reign in October, 1961, it was our #1 country single 48 years ago this week and became Dean's biggest (and unlikeliest) hit as well. Dean's first country hit was Bumming Around in 1953 (#5 on the 4 Star label). He then had a four year drought of hits. In 1957, he signed with Columbia Records. Even then he released ten (yes) singles over the next four years without ANY success (imagine that happening today!). Frustrated, he decided to write something. He came up with Big Bad John and the rest they say is history. Considering the main character dies in a mine, I am astounded by the accross the board success. Besides topping the A.C. chart during the last ten weeks of 1961, it topped the pop charts for five weeks in November and December (it was the 100th #1 hit of the rock era), and topped the country charts for two weeks in November. It was his first gold selling single. His other major (top 20) hits are: 1. Dear Ivan-1962-#9 2. The Cajun Queen (sequel to Big Bad John)-#16/To A Sleeping Beauty-#15-1962 3. P.T. 109-1962-#3 4. Little Black Book-1962-#10 5. The First Thing Ev'ry Morning And The Last Thing Ev'ry Night-1965-#1 6. Stand Beside Me-1966-#10 7. Sweet Misery-1967-#16 8. I.O.U.-1976-#9 Even title #8 made all three charts (#35 pop and #47 A.C.). It was an ode to his mother. It became his second gold selling single. To show how versatile Dean was, he hosted a TV show during the 1950s on CBS and on ABC during the 1960s. He also plays piano, guitar, accordian, and the harmonica. More recently, he has been running a meat business and a chain of restaurants. This is the complete list of those songs that topped the country, pop, and adult contemporary charts: 1. Big Bad John-Jimmy Dean-1961 2. Honey-Bobby Goldsboro-1968 3. The Most Beautiful Girl-Charlie Rich-1973 4. Hey Won't You Play Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song-B.J. Thomas-1975 5. Rhinestone Cowboy-Glen Campbell-1975 6. I'm Sorry-John Denver-1975 7. Southern Nights-Glen Campbell-1977 8. Lady-Kenny Rogers-1980 9. I Love A Rainy Night-Eddie Rabbitt-1981 10. 9 To 5-Dolly Parton-1981 11. Islands In The Stream-Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton-1983 Here is what the chart looked like back then:
BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING NOVEMBER 20, 1961: 1. BIG BAD JOHN-JIMMY DEAN-COLUMBIA 2. Walk On By-Leroy Van Dyke-Mercury 3. It's Your World-Marty Robbins-Columbia 4. Soft Rain-Ray Price-Columbia 5. You're The Reason-Bobby Edwards-Crest 6. Walking The Streets-Webb Pierce-Decca 7. Tender Years-George Jones-Mercury 8. Backtrack-Faron Young-Capitol 9. Happy Birthday To Me-Hank Locklin-RCA 10. Under The Infuence Of Love-Buck Owens-Capitol

Nice Jimmy Dean reference. Sausage for breakfast in honor of JD.
I have no idea how many songs name-check Dr. King, but there must be quite a few. Collin Raye's My Kind Of Girl, for instance.
As for the Keith Urban song, it's about waiting for summer to come around, so it's fitting that it will be on the charts in every season except summer. What sense does it make for a song about "summer coming around" to be a hit in the summer?
