It seems every year signals a comeback of some sorts. When I define comeback, I consider three elements. Only one of the following may exist to define a true comeback, in my opinion. a) The artist has waited a long time - i.e. more than five years - for album, generated uncompromising anticipation among fans. b) A once commercially successful artist has achieved lack of success for many years, and finally releases an album that renews their commercial prominence. c) An artist who had recently quit or broken up has re-united and scored prominence. Keep in mind that a particular comeback, in the sense of the jdmasta289 personal chart, does not have to encompass artists who actually achieved commercial success. Rather, these artists must have achieved some kind of success on my personal chart and fit the three qualities defined above, assuming my chart equals commercial success. OK, I got too technical. Oh, well. Without further ado, the award for Comeback Artist of the Year goes to The Offspring. The Offspring have achieved five jdmasta289 Top 40 hits. However, they had not released a full-fledged album since 2003 - not counting their greatest hits album in 2004 which spurned a major and minor hit single. Truth be told, not many artists technically "came back" in '08 (Metallica come to mind), but the Offspring take the award. "Hammerhead" and "You're Gonna Go Far Kid" both peaked inside the top 10. However, it was the most success they had achieved for any album, including their 2005 greatest hits compilation. Anyway, congratulations to Dexter and the folks! The Offspring, my Comeback Artist of the Year.

This batch is slightly easier.
40. This first single comes from an artist who is known by a different name in Australia. In the land down under, the prefix, or first part of their name, is 'sabo.' Raconteurs - Salute Your Solution (halo19)
39. Knights in shining ____ wearing that protective layer at night. This is the second single, and this single fared nowhere nearly as well as the first single, which almost scraped the Top 40 Mediabase Alternative chart. Armor For Sleep - Williamsburg (Made of Steel)
38. This song title describes what each person does when they stop sleeping. It's the first single from a St. Louis band's most recent album. Story Of The Year - Wake Up (Matt4319)
37. The title of this third single is a common expression when starting machinery. When you start a computer, a car, or a grill, you "____ __ __." Modest Mouse - Fire It Up (Matt4319)
36. Despising Titanic star Winslet's first name. This is the first single to ever make apperances on my chart under two different titles. The original title was "Always Something." When the group re-released the album, they granted the song a new title, its (obviously) current title. I Hate Kate - It's Always Better (PHOBIA)
35. The only word in this song's title is repeated twice. Much of this existed, unfortunately, in the 2008 presidential political campaign. Hey, maybe if you tell them often enough, the public will buy into them. Serj Tankian - Lie Lie Lie (PHOBIA)
34. This service exists at airports, quite commonly. Ground-based navigators perform this activity. This first single did not perform nearly as well as a certain 2004-5 single, which spent time inside the Mediabase Alternative top 30. Louis XIV - Air Traffic Control (Made of Steel)
33. Democrats did this to Washington for Congress in 2006, and then again for the Executive offices in 2008. Snow Patrol - Take Back The City (Matt4319)
32. "Running through hell, heaven can wait" Foo Fighters - Long Road To Ruin (PHOBIA)
31. Feminists might like the subject matter of this song, by a certain group with a strange name. Forever The Sickest Kids - She's A Lady (PHOBIA)
Scoreboard
PHOBIA - 25 Made of Steel - 13 Matt4319 - 9 halo19 - 7 P(A)=0 - 6 Cody - 5 crve105 - 4 oscillations - 1

39. Armor for Sleep - "Hold the Door" (Your hints are getting easier lol) 36. I Hate Kate - "It's Always Better" (The Winslet hint was a dead giveaway) 35. Serj Tankian - "Lie, Lie, Lie" (REPEATED twice, good one) 32. Foo Fighters - "Long Road to Ruin" (This was driving me crazy cause I could hear the lyric in my head but I could not remember the song for awhile)

And now that you think about it....I actually think "Hold The Door" was the second single. Sometimes, I don't really follow single order too closely, unless it's big on the official charts. It's a different song, though.

39. Armor For Sleep - Williamsburg Just out of curiosity, what was the first single? Wikipedia lists "Williamsburg" as the first, but I believe that's an error. As far as I know, it was "Hold The Door." 31. Forever the Sickest Kids - She's A Lady Correct!

33 was exceptionally difficult, so here's another hint: The song was the first single from a Scottish rock band. A real "work of art."

Each year marks a significant brand of new artists. I purposely open my mind to new Fuse bands (soon to be ex-Fuse bands, thanks to a ridiculously ill-founded format switch and a cancellation of Steven's Untitled Rock Show). Although they are notoriously slow to add them, my local alternative station helps introduce me to these new artists. I also hear about newbies through word of mouth and magazines such as Spin and Alternative Press, which I access quite often. New sounds pop up around my chart constantly and consistently, as I remain true to staple musicians but don't merely listen to them for nostalgic purposes, like some 50-somethings do with no longer relevant 70's acts. This discussion leads me to announce my Breakthrough Artist of 2008. This year marked the breakthrough of chart success among several musicians, including, but not limited to, the Flobots, MGMT, Vedera, Airborne Toxic Event, Gaslight Anthem, Ludo, and the Republic Tigers. However, no artist left a lasting imprint like Washington born-and-bred indie musicians Band Of Horses. This band scored prominence with their second and third jdmasta289 Top 40 hits, respectively, in "Is There A Ghost" and "No One's Gonna Love You." Their most recent album, Cease To Begin, features a refreshingly folksy, raw sound that simply cannot be found on most other rock artists' albums, including fellow Washingtonites - who still make similarly great music - Modest Mouse and Death Cab For Cutie. Cheers, Band Of Horses, for your first jdmasta289 award. Band Of Horses, the Breakthrough Artist of 2008.

30. This St. Louis rock band sounds eerily similar to '90s rock band Harvey Danger. Strange, because both artists had one song that scored prominence on Mediabase Alternative and couldn't follow it up with a successful second single. This first single is very theatrical in its nature.Ludo - Love Me Dead (Innocent) 29. This song is the second single from this alternative staple artist's most recent album. Their band name originated from a picture involving the lead singer and planet Earth.Jimmy Eat World - Always Be (fran.182) 28. This song shares the same name as the mother of a prominent religious figure.Foxboro Hot Tubs - Mother Mary (P(A)=0) 27. The artist Mutemath broke through in 2007 with a song of the same name as this single, from an "excited" rock band.Tickle Me Pink - Typical (Innocent) 26. Splenda, sugar, or *this song title*.Augustana - Sweet And Low (P(A)=0) 25. This band is a local artist (they are from Kansas City, MO), and will be difficult to guess. Therefore, I'll allow a little outside research to take place. Despite the artist's relative obscurity, the song was featured on a number of other personal charts, including this one.Republic Tigers - Buildings And Mountains (P(A)=0) 24. The video to this song featured cameo appearances from Mark Hoppus and Gabe Saporta, among others.Fall Out Boy - I Don't Care (fran.182) 23. A weather phenonemon on a typically stressful day.Shiny Toy Guns - Rainy Monday (fran.182) 22. "Would you, would you, would you be strong enough for me "Safetysuit - Someone Like You (fran.182) 21. This song stalled for weeks below the top 30 before finally taking off on Mediabase Alternative this fall. It could still be one of the breakthrough songs (and artists) of 2009.Airborne Toxic Event - Sometime Around Midnight (fran.182) ScoreboardPHOBIA - 25 Made of Steel - 13 Matt4319 - 9 P(A)=0 - 9 halo19 - 7 Cody - 5 fran.182 - 5 crve105 - 4 Innocent - 2 oscillations - 1
