Ladies and gentlemen of the Pulse world, it's that time again! Unbelievably, shorts and sunscreen have turned to parched skin and uncomfortably tight pants and multiple layers. With the dawn of brighter days ahead comes another Year-End Countdown from your resident bleeding-heart, angry uber-liberal and alternative/emo music extraordinaire, Mr. jdmasta289. First and foremost, let me introduce myself to the forum. People might know me for interpreting comments too personally and spouting my liberal bias over in the political threads. Prior to this year, I made quite a presence over on the Alternative forum as well. Although my alt. presence has waned, I still read the board consistently, especially sections which contain music and issues that I am intrigued by: the Fuses, MTV2 Rocks, and C-Span's of the world. But I digress. My name is jdmasta289. Don't take me too seriously. I might bite. So, back to the contest.....In addition to providing clues to each sets of songs on my countdown, I will provide awards for Icon, Female Artist, Music Video, Solo Artist, Breakthrough Artist, Comeback Artist, Album, Artist, and finally Song of the Year for 2008, which will [of course] be my #1 song. 2008 marked a year of change for my personal countdown. Emo rock faded somewhat while indie bands like Airborne Toxic Event, the Flobots, the Raconteurs, Tickle Me Pink, Ludo, and Band of Horses began to dominate my chart. Also, many songs which had dropped off the countdown weeks prior reappeared and began dominating, suddenly. Songs such as "Shattered" (O.A.R.), "Love Me Dead" (Ludo), and "Strange Times" (Black Keys) re-entered the chart and performed admirably at least once. Once again, new artists were embraced. Newcomers such as MGMT, Republic Tigers, Airborne Toxic Event, and Forever The Sickest Kids were embraced like never before, as the countdown ventured toward groundbreaking - defiantly alternative - musical styles. Artists such as Puddle of Mudd, Death Cab For Cutie, the Offspring, and Korn experienced somewhat unexpected comebacks, while staples like Alkaline Trio, Fall Out Boy, and Coldplay continued to wreak havoc atop the charts. All in all, 2008 was truly a diverse year for my format. I feel the alternative and rock charts continue to recycle the same trends, unfortunately, leaving new artists to hang out to dry. The jdmasta289 countdown, on the contrary, welcomes those newbies and left-field acts with open arms, and will continue to do so, while staying true to its core: most pop/punk, emo, indie, plain alternative, post-hardcore, retro/rock, "trip-hop", and even some post-grunge and alt-metal will continue to stay true to form.So that's my synopsis. Pretty nifty, huh? As I mentioned, this contest marks the third consecutive year of a trend that I hope will continue - a true top 100, year-end guessing game for my personal chart. Here are the #1s of the two years prior: #1 Song of 2006: "MakeDamnSure" by Taking Back Sunday#1 Song of 2007: "Light Up The Sky" by Yellowcard****The rules and guidelines are simple, and are as follows**** - I will provide a clue for each song, #100 through #1. That clue will be 1-2 sentences. We work our way "up" the countdown, with batches of 10 songs for each round.
- Each person may make an unlimited amount of guesses per round.
- When each of the songs in 'x' round are guessed correctly, we move forth to the next batch of songs.
- I can't give hints until it's decided that nobody will win that song.
- You must state the ARTIST and SONG correctly. (I'll give exceptions for misspellings or omitted words such as 'the', 'and', etc. etc.)
- I will provide the list in incriments (100-91, 90-81, 80-71, and so forth). Once all songs from a particular set are guessed correctly, I'll move forth and provide the next set.
- If you get the artist correct but the song incorrect in your guess, I will notify you of that you guessed either the *artist* or the *song* correctly.
There are prizes for first place, second place, and third place winners of this contest. Here they are: For the first place winner, I will dedicate a thread in the lounge praising your musical knowledge and presence in the board. The second place winner will receive praise in my signature for approximately one month. Just a brief congratulations for your accomplishments in this contest. The third place winner will receive praise in my signature for approximately one week. Congratulations to last year's winners of the Top 100 Guessing Game: 1st Place: Matt4319 (PMB administrator) 2nd Place: crash463rd Place: American Idiot.....who won last year's contest. So rawk on, ye PMB faithful. Last year's contest lasted all but one week. Will this contest last longer? Let's begin.

Let's begin the countdown with songs that charted but narrowly missed the top 100.
One Day As A Lion - Wild International Ex-Rage Against The Machine frontman Zach de la Rocha and former Mars Volta drummer Joe Theodore convened early in the year and formed a band as political and raw as one of the former acts associated with this band. They blended rock and rap together brilliantly, and peaked at #16 on my countdown last summer.
Panic At The Disco - That Green Gentleman "Things were shaping up to be pretty odd" when these twenty somethings churned out seemingly another Fall Out Boy-esque sound two years ago. Although they were signed by Pete Wentz' Fueled By Ramen records, these guys stand alone in terms of genre-bending and pure talent. Quirky, indeed, but their theatrical elements are second to none.
Rehab - Bartender Song Remember "It Don't Matter?" The Year 2000? While Fred Durst was churning out wicked(ly bad) rhymes and Eminem was mocking 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, these southern hip-hop boys were combining the best of those worlds - rock and hip-hop (along with dozens of other people). Regardless, they returned in 2008 with a left-field hit that had been reproduced several times. Its novelty wore off fast, as it peaked at #19 but only spent 8 quick weeks on the chart.
Editors - Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors The Editors were a band that I was not particularly fond of, in the beginning. They were lamely following a well-worn trend begun by the Strokes and the Hives and were getting indie credibility for it. Although the magazines will literally hump any singer that is remotely indie, these guys are surprisingly good in their album An End Has a Start. Look for these four to continue to dent the countdown, in the future.
Story Of The Year - Message To The World This St. Louis quintet holds the record for the most weeks spent on the jdmasta289 countdown. "Sidewalks" spent 30 weeks and peaked at #1 in 2004 and 2005. These guys, along with bands like Yellowcard, Thrice, and Taking Back Sunday, led the post-hardcore, screamo, punk-revival of the early-to-mid 00's. "Message To The World" was the second single from their album The Black Swan, which was very original and different from its predecessors. It peaked at #21 last summer.

The first to guess correctly in each round will win. Does that answer your question? Color me a confused panda.

100. This band has truly been at the forefront of the post-hardcore/metalcore movement for several years. This only single from their most recent album was also featured on Madden NFL 09 and Rock Band 2.Underoath - Desperate Times Desperate Measures (Cody) 99. The video to this first single features appearances by a number of recognizable faces from Internet video sensations.Weezer - Pork And Beans (PA=0) 98. This band waited over one year to release this fourth single (U.S.). Surprisingly, it is performing very well on the Mediabase Alternative chart.Incubus - Love Hurts (Made of Steel) 97. The music video to this second single features this Utah band live at the 2007 MuchMusic Video Awards. The song was originally thought to be about My Chemical Romance lead singer Gerard Way.Used - Pretty Handsome Awkward (crve105) 96. This band, surprisingly, formed over sixteen years ago. Such "underground hits" include the songs "Sometimes" and "Leaves". This was the lead single to their most recent album.Ours - The Worst Things Beautiful (Made of Steel) 95. This band is a Vans Warped Tour staple, but are not known too well in the mainstream community. The music video features the band performing on a desert wasteland before being rescued by a helicopter. It is also featured on the Madden NFL 09 soundtrack. From First To Last - Worlds Away (Cody) 94. Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake ____ (the band's name is also the name of a large and spontaneous oceanic event).Rogue Wave - Lake Michigan (Made of Steel) 93. This is the lead single from the album of the same name. This indie/punk band performed at the Night the Buzz Stole Christmas, 2008. (OK, a huge hint).Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound (PA=0) 92. The lead singer of this band suffers from bipolar disease. This comeback single featured a more dance-oriented sound. The album bears the same name as the phrase: "stand up for 'x' type of music."Say Anything - Baby Girl I'm A Blur (Matt4319) 91. This song is featured in a 2007 blockbuster film. The album features songs written almost exclusively from one singer - this singer, who is also the frontman of a legendary rock group.Eddie Vedder - Hard Sun (Made of Steel) ScorecardMade of Steel - 4 Cody - 2 PA=0 - 2 crve105 - 1 Matt4319 - 1

I'm going to edit on the front page. I will post the clues in increments (100-91, 90-81, 80-71, and so on). When every song in a certain set is guessed correctly, I will move onto the next set. I might not be on the board extremely often, but I'll try to get the sets updated once every few hours (sans overnights).

Before I proceed to the next batch, let me pay a brief homage to the females who entered my countdown this year. Because the style of music that enthralls me, admittedly, is so testosterone-oriented, it's always refreshing when some estrogen gets in the mix to shake things up somewhat. Among the ladies to enter the jdmasta289 countdown in 2008 were Carah Faye Charnow and Sisely Treasure from the Shiny Toy Guns, Otep Shamaya from Otep, M.I.A., the female-led Vedera and Asteroids Galaxy Tour, and of course, a definitive staple at my "format", the beautiful Hayley Williams of Paramore. Female Artist of the Year Hayley Williams. Hayley and her Franklin, Tennessee band have made appearances on my countdown thrice, beginning with "Emergency" in 2006, followed by "Misery Business" and "CrushCrushCrush" last year, and finally returning with the Twilight Soundtrack-flag waving anthem "Decode", which entered the #1 slot of my countdown for the final two weeks of the year. Paramore sport a pop-punk sound with an early-twenty-something style of energy. Highly recommended for teeny-boppers but serious music listeners, as well.

90. This second single from this Canadian band bears the title of two musical instruments. The first instrument in this title is commonly used in Blues Traveler songs. Hot Hot Heat - Harmonicas And Tambourines (Made of Steel)
89. This song title bears the name of teenage rebels despised by crotchety, old people. One of the true Indie breakthroughs of 2008. Vampire Weekend - A-Punk (Matt4319)
88. Many people deemed this the definitive "anthem of the summer." Kid Rock - All Summer Long (P(A) = 0)
87. "___ and ___", she said......on a hospital bed. This Chicago band experienced a somewhat unexpected Alternative chart breakthrough with the single that preceeded this one. Alkaline Trio - Over And Out (PHOBIA)
86. The first single from the southern rock-inspired Followill Brothers of Tennessee. Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire (PHOBIA)
85. The first single from one of the last remaining anarchist-punk groups from the 1980s. Pennywise - The Western World (PHOBIA)
84. The theme of this album chronicles the true story of the lead singer's hardship in breaking up with his long-term girlfriend. Such a theme is commonly associated in the genre that features acts such as these. Such examples of this song title include praying before dinner at Thanksgiving, Christmas, or other important holidays where aunts, cousins, uncles, and grandparents are present. Senses Fail - Family Tradition (PHOBIA)
83. Atlantic City, Las Vegas, and the state of Mississippi contain many of these businesses. This was the first single and peaked at #3 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. Jimmy Eat World - Big Casino (Matt4319)
82. BDSM. S&M. Order!!! (The first single from this rock veteran). Nine Inch Nails - Discipline (Made of Steel)
81. "I'm so much more than meets the eye." Seether - Breakdown (crve105)
*Note* For simplicity purpose, I usually use the term 'single' when the song may have not been officially released as a single. When it goes for adds and gets promoted, it's a single in my book. Sorry.
Scorecard
Made of Steel - 6 PHOBIA - 4 Matt4319 - 3 P(A)=0 - 3 Cody - 2 crve105 - 2
