I just can't hear Leona singing this song AT ALL. Just can't get my brain to compute that. Same here. I was actually trying to think what it would sound like with her singing it and I can usually do that with artists and certain songs but for some reason it just doesn't work with this song.

It's perfect for him. It needs to have someone without such a unique voice. Elliott's tone works so well with it.

Interesting interview. I think Elliott is a terrific person and has a nice voice but he doesn't have that "it" factor. He came out with a really nice first single and he was still fresh in the minds of a lot of radio listeners so radio gave him some love. The follow-up songs didn't do anything (I'm assuming there was a follow-up single because I don't recall ever hearing anything but the first single). Anyway, based on what he said in the article and even the fact that AI isn't jumping up and down to have him on, doesn't look good for his future. Without radio play and PR, who knows how the album will sell. All we have to do is look at Bo's second album and Taylor's. They went from decent sales to practically nothing in one album's time.

There was one follow up single and it stalled short of the Top 40. Bo and Taylor's second albums sales went off a cliff because they were RCA artists for the first and indie artists for the second. Without the support of a major label and without music that would get played on the radio, their albums went nowhere.
Elliott's first album was an indie and did amazingly well. That said, sophomore albums from Idol contestants always struggle to match the sales of the first. I think Elliott will have a tough time with the second as well. However, I still think that he has enough talent to make a solid career.
In terms of AI, they've been incredibily generous to Elliott (especially since he's not in their stable of artists). It would be great if he were on again, but it's no knock on him if he's not on three years in a row. But who knows, we may be in for a surprise.

I'll always believe there could have been more hits from his first album if they were given the chance, One Word was just a bad single choice, imo. Alright was way too radio friendly to flop, and You Are the One would have been a huge HAC/AC hit, and done well on CHR too I think. Movin On and Train Wreck also had hit potential. One Word just killed the era prematurely.

Well, there's a HUGE difference among Bo, Taylor and Elliott. Bo and Taylor's 2nd albums were even more non-mainstream than their debut albums. There's just no way the mainstream radio would give them airplay. Elliott's material is very mainstream/Top 40 friendly.

One Word was a huge mistake. But that's in the past...I wish him ALL the best!

Without the support of a major label and without music that would get played on the radio, their albums went nowhere. Agreed. However, the only point I was really trying to make is that there's already somewhat of a pattern developing with AI artists....pretty good sales on the first album and lukewarm or non-existent sales thereafter. Pickler would be another example. Really so far there have only been two AI artists that are past their first albums that are still thriving...Carrie and Kelly. I think Daughtry will do fine, too. (I know people will disagree about Fantasia but I for one think her "star" career is about over.) I think Jordan may also be iffy for the next album. I know she got airplay and had two very successful singles but I question her overall star appeal, too.

I agree with you 100% about the pattern of Idol albums. Pickler is def another example and she gets fantastic promotion and is opening for Taylor Swift. It's just a natural process where the huge excitement/buzz of the show fades. I love Kelly but her album sales can't compare to the numbers she put up in the past. Even Carrie went from 7 million for album #1 to 2.7 for album #2.
So much is going on with declining album sales overall. Plus Idol cranks out new people every year. They get the heavy duty promo, etc. However, it is still pretty amazing that so many of these people still have strong careers. That's more amazing than the fact that they can't sell multi-plat with every album they put out.

Reminder: Elliot peaked at #49 the week of November 25th, 2007: 50 49 ELLIOTT YAMIN One Word 432 424 8 1.092
Then, if we are speaking OBJECTIVELY, I have to disagree with Rumours. Fantasia had her BIGGEST R&B hit with "When I See U", a #1 single from her second album. I don't know how that would not mean being successful.

I don't know how that would not mean being successful. One more comment from me because I don't want to derail an Elliott thread but how much did Fantasia's second album sell? Honestly, I'm not sure. About 300k? That's not sales of a star or superstar even if she had a #1 hit on one of the radio formats. What kind of ticket sales does she have on tour? Has she headlined a tour yet? Lot's of different factors to look at when saying someone is a star. I just don't see if with Fantasia. Now, I'm not saying Elliott will have to compete at the highest levels. I'm just wondering if he'll be able to consistently tour without radio support. I do wish him the best though as I said earlier he seems like a very nice guy and he WANTS to have a long career in music.

Fantasia's sophomore is certified gold, and the album only spawned one hit single so that's pretty okay in my opinion. 'WISU' is superb, probably my favorite song from an Idol.

He has his highest total ever in quick cut with 283 Several stations that dropped have picked up again. This song isn't done yet, don't write it off. He still has the video and album drop. Hopefully he can score an Idol performance as well.

Lovin' this song now. The chorus is one of the strongest I've heard this year. Too bad about the verses, but I've gotten use to it.

So Taylor Hicks is going to perform on Idol next week.
Can Elliott get some love already? Damn.

Well, there's still a chance he could perform Top 4 week or at the Finale. Keeping fingers crossed.
-- I don't really understand how radio stations are supposed to gauge listener reaction by playing this song overnight. The 1 or 2 spins overnight each night doesn't do much to get feedback from anyone. Another thing...this song hasn't reached the 1 million audience level yet, and Sirius accounts for half of the audience he has currently. It's sad that only 4 stations out of the 28 adds are spinning this in daytime regularly.

Michael Johns is performing. Where did you read that? I'm surprised they would have him on again in the same season even though the first time he did a duet with Carly.

Oh boy I really hope that's not true. Ugh Taylor Hicks and Micheal Johns = two losers instead of one great singer. I wouldn't be surprised though. It would be too amazing to have him on three seasons in a row.
What a waste of promo.

Sorry, I'm not a fan. But good for him for getting that gig. I guess it helps to have those Aussie connections.
But since this is the CHR thread and neither Hicks or MJ will ever get played on Top 40 radio, it's still a huge waste of promo.

No Elliott and no Daughtry appearance this season? Ugh. :( I'm a bit ok with Daughtry not performing (because they don't have the single out anyway) but I was hoping Elliott would. He needs it more and he actually has a single out already. Blah.

I know. No Elliott and no Daughtry. We get Hicks and Micheal Johns instead. ; Okay, I'll stop venting. There's still a 1% chance it's not true.

I'm still hopeful that when Elliott was out in LA taping Idol Tonight that he secretly performed on Idol as well. He did say that he got to meet the contestants backstage. I don't think some AI alum would just go back to meet the contestants...unless if he and Adam are besties now.

I can't believe they invited Taylor Hicks back before Elliott.
