This is an article from Keith's website: "Sweet Thing", Keith's first single from his soon to be released CD Defying Gravity, hit the top spot today, on both the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and Mediabase/Country Aircheck. This marks the two-time Grammy Award winner's tenth #1 and his third consecutive within the past six months ("You Look Good In My Shirt" and his duet "Start A Band" with Brad Paisley). Recorded at The Castle Recording Studios in Franklin, Tennessee, "Sweet Thing" was co-written with Monty Powell and co-produced with longtime producer Dann Huff. Underscoring the popularity of the song is the tremendous success of www.sweetthing.tv, where over 74,000 customized videos of "Sweet Thing" have been created by fans. On Tuesday, March 31st, Urban will release his fifth studio recording Defying Gravity. Shortly thereafter, he will start rehearsals for his "Escape Together World Tour" with KC Masterpiece© and Kingsford© sponsored by Verizon. The tour, set to kick off in Connecticut on May 7th, will have one support act for each concert; acts including Taylor Swift, Sugarland, Dierks Bentley, Jason Aldean, Zac Brown Band, Lady Antebellum, Little Big Town and Glen Campbell. "Kiss A Girl", the second single from Defying Gravity, will be delivered to radio on March 9th.---------------------- Interesting move. It certainly worked out for Kenny Chesney ("Don't Blink") and Toby Keith ("As Good As I Once Was"), from a chart standpoint anyway. I'm guessing "Sweet Thing" will still get a second week at #1, but who knows what's going to happen at this point. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to hearing "Kiss A Girl" next week and the full album in another four weeks. Edit: Here are two YouTube videos of Keith recording this song in studio: #1#2

I think "Defying Gravity", in many respects, is intended to be the flip-side of sorts to "love, pain and the whole crazy thing".........meaning that while his previous album was more reflective and centered around the struggle of relationships, "Defying Gravity" is its optimistic, energetic, sunny opposite.
I guess it just depends on what type of songs you prefer tonally that will make some listeners either like it more or less respectively. Still, given Urban has enjoyed a well-earned reputation for being an engaging, all-around energetic guitarist and vocalist on stage and in studio, I think he can very well win over some listeners who weren't previously comfortable with his more maudlin material.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Any chance "Start A Band" will be on his album as well? That would make three single releases well before the album's release. It could work out very well for him.

Good move, I think. "Sweet Thing" is charming, but I don't know that it's an album mover. Better idea to have a second song out there to convince people to pick up the record.
I'm looking forward to hearing this in full, not least because that will hopefully stop me from thinking of Sebastian the Crab whenever I see this thread title. The clips sound kind of "Once in a Lifetime"-ish in vibe (and maybe a little "You're My Better Half"-ish based on tempo), which doesn't make me very happy. But hopefully the full track will be more compelling.

Putting the word "kiss" in the title seems to help songs on the chart, and probably will move a few albums as well. As Pat Green teases in the chorus of Country Star, KU does manage to break a few hearts along the way.
I hope this doesn't sound too much like Once In A Lifetime but there is certainly a practical side to releasing the new single now, a few weeks before the album is released. However, I was hoping for a 3-week #1 for ST and we aren't going to see that now. Good news for Darius, bad news for me. Ah well. With a 5 million lead heading into the new week, ST should get its second week easily enough.

The immediate release of the next single once again reinforces the idea that labels don't care anymore (or at the moment) about racking up those weeks at #1. It does seem more practical to release a new song and hopefully encourage more sales than to have bragging rights about the most weeks at the penthouse. What kind of money is that gonna get ya?
And dudley, I immediately thought of Sebastian too when I saw the title. Instant reaction of crooning: "There, you see her..."

B93's Broadway has the song up for streaming with audio tags. It's catchy and Keith can make just about anything charming. But this is kind of uninteresting on first listen, from a lyrical and production standpoint. Here are the lyrics (as far as I can tell): To-to-to kiss and tell It's just not my style But the night is young And it's been a while And she broke my heart Broke it right in two And it took some time
But I'm feeling like I'm Finally ready to Find Find somebody new.
[chorus] I wanna kiss a girl, I wanna hold her tight, And maybe make a little magic in the moonlight. Don't wanna go too far Just to take it slow. But I shouldn't be lonely in this big ol' world. I wanna kiss a girl.
Ooh, it's that moment when You start closing in First you're holding back Then surrendering It could start a fire Light up the sky Such a simple thing Do you wanna try? Are you ready to Say goodbye To all these blues?
[chorus]
[bridge] 'Cause maybe tonight It could turn into the rest of our lives Oh yeah Are you ready? Are you ready? [Are you ready?] Are you ready? [Are you ready?] To cross that line Put your lips on mine. Ooh, put your lips on mine, baby.
Do you wanna try? Are you ready to Say goodbye To all these blues?
[chorus] [chorus] Na-na-na-na-na + assorted riffing

just heard it on the radio for the first time...
yeah those are the lyrics, and from that standpoint the song is nothing special in my opinion...but it's a very catchy chorus, and should be a nice spring/summer song.

Thank you so much for the link Dudley. Been dying to hear this song. I agree, it's not fantastic on first listen but it's hard not to enjoy Keith anyway. Ugh, what does that "are you ready to" line sound like? It's driving me crazy. I think it's from another Keith song.

I like it. Simple song, and desire is a much better topic for radio than the problems of GM so I will enjoy it for a couple of months. Then it will probably age ungracefully, as it isn't as lively musically as Sweet Thing or Start A Band. Or I Told You So -- come to think of it, it's his weakest song (musically) since Once In A Lifetime, but still I like it.
The bridge is a little unconvincing. The "rest of our lives" idea seems forced. It's just a little kissing he's talking about. But the verses are good for a simple good-time song. Roll down the windows (unless, even better, you have a convertible) and will your local station to play this back-to-back with Pat Green's Country Star, and a drive to the grocery store will be more fun.

Sounds like a concert song in which Keith could have a lot of fun with the audience. As a recording, lyrically it kind of makes me roll my eyes. Like Keith Urban would have any trouble finding a girl to kiss, you know?

I like it, but I don't love it. It will probably grow on me a little, but I much prefer 'Sweet Thing'.

Yup your right. Very similar riffs inside also. Taylors at 30 second Keith at 1 min. I can't judge Keith on his stuff. I'm a Michael Landau fan. Its weird they use to play together.I'm not sure why Keith went to playing this stuff though.

The bridge is a little unconvincing. The "rest of our lives" idea seems forced. It's just a little kissing he's talking about. But the verses are good for a simple good-time song. I agree about the bridge. It takes a lot for someone of Keith's skill and attractiveness to be unpersuasive, but he is just that in those two lines. The lyrics have their moments of immediacy, but this starting a fire/lighting up the sky business is so overdone in song. Although Keith makes the lyrics work with the melody, it feels like I've heard them many times before and didn't need to hear them again. Also, as Zazie says, this song is his blandest from a musical standpoint in a long time. I think it's even blander than "Once in a Lifetime," which I didn't like but at least had a more distinctive feel to the instrumentation. This sounds more fuzzy and generic to me. * sigh* I was wondering if Defying Gravity would be the first full-length studio album of Keith's that I would buy and so far, it seems not. I'm hoping there are a few songs on the album good enough to buy from iTunes (to join my other favorite Keith songs) and I'll wait for Keith to swing through NYC for a concert. I finally figured out the song this was making me think of. At first, I thought WILL had it with the "Love Story" remix intro (and he did). But it suddenly occurred to me that the first few lines of "Kiss a Girl"'s chorus bear a pretty close melodic resemblance to the chorus of Vanessa Carlton's "Hands on Me". I would imagine that it's a coincidence, as Heroes & Thieves sadly didn't get much attention outside of Vanessa's core fanbase. And in any case, I'm pretty sure that hook isn't original to Vanessa, either. I just feel better now that I know which song my mind has been telling me to sing whenever I've listened to "Kiss a Girl." I'm sure you're all very relieved. ;)
